AV MOD MATERIAL: NARUTO Ch. 614 Review

With war comes sacrifice, but will this one finally stick?

If only this death could have been more original.
If only this death could have been more original.

The plan to win the war for the Shinobi Alliance has been delivered, but first there is the set up. With Naruto being the key to victory, it's the Hyuga Clan that steps up to guard him. Meanwhile, Obito and Madara share a foreshadowing conversation.

The Good

You have a one in three chance of guessing who dies here.
You have a one in three chance of guessing who dies here.

I know last week I praised the noble sacrifice of Shikamaru and Ino's fathers, but I also questioned if they were actually dead. We now are dealing with two self sacrifice scenes within as many weeks. He makes you think it's going to be Hinata dying for Naruto - - again, but throws a slight curve ball when Neji jumps in the way to shield them both. The part that makes me think this death may actually last is that we are nearing the end of a Shinobi World War arc with no real main cast death. This sort makes the all powerful enemy and beast seem pretty ineffective if they can't take out one person of significant note.

If this death actually sticks. It makes me question Neji's role in the ROCK LEE AND HIS NINJA PALS spin-off.

There was no real progress shown on Shikaku's final, victory plan, but that makes sense. Wouldn't be much of a grand plan to be revealed in a single chapter. I just hope it's not something we need to wait long for. The only real plot development is in Obito talking about their ploy to revive Madara so he can become a Jinchuriki.

The Bad

Naruto, didn't Oda do this same thing two years ago?
Naruto, didn't Oda do this same thing two years ago?

Ever get the feeling of deja vu. I know I did while watching the scene of Neji's final moments. It was bad enough when we saw that the Moon's Eye Plan bore a remarkable resemblance to the theHuman Instrumentality Project. Now, we have the death of Neji. It's has a lot of similarities to the death of Portgas D. Ace in ONE PIECE. They both happen during a war, the protagonist collapses from exhaustion, the character leaps in the way of the attack and is pierced through from behind, and they both give their dying words to the hero as his head rests over the right shoulder. Couldn'tKishimoto have done something a little original to kill off such a popular character?

It makes me wonder how many times manga characters have died while sharing a bromance hug. Does this happen more often than I realize, and I'm only noticing this more now becasue ONE PIECE did this only two years ago?

Verdict 3/5

Yeah, taunt the protagonist after killing a friend. That always works out well for the bad guy.
Yeah, taunt the protagonist after killing a friend. That always works out well for the bad guy.

I honestly want to mourn Neji, but Kishimoto has gone to this well a few too many times in the past. He did it with Kakashi and countless others during the Invasion of Pain arc, and pulled them all back. They even plant the seeds of a possible new revival from Obito's conversation with Madara, but that would require Obito having a sudden turn in motives. Am I being too nitpicking on how Neji's death was conducted?

Ace's death was a tipping point for Luffy to make him realize that he wasn't strong enough for the New World, What will Neji's death lead to for Naruto? Was there a purpose for it, or was he just a name to kill? This does build a motivation for Naruto and Hinata to unite together in a meaningful way. That would be a positive outcome.

Next week is the Christmas break. I'm not sure there will be a review up. On that same note, I'm also not even sure there will be aSHONEN JUMP published next week. That would make a review not only pointless but impossible. Happy Holidays, everyone.

I hope Neji's death will not become a Byakuya "death", but still Neji dying is pretty major IMO.

This entire arc has been about dead characters still being present! It is tough for me to care about characters dying when so many have come back after doing so.

The main cast of Naruto is so large that I find it difficult to care about main characters who die. I don't even remember the last time Neji contributed much to plot progression. There are two characters I do care about though:

Shino: Shino has always been second behind Shikimaru when it comes to planning, but I think that Shino has been planning something this whole time. Towards the end of Naruto I would not be surprised if Shino had an army of bug spies preparing to put an end to the war.

Gaara: He's just my favorite character.

Side note: The deaths of Ace and White Beard had little impact on me. One Piece suffers from cast overload too. After a few hundred episodes I was glad someone finally died in a way that had heavy meaning to the main characters, but it was too little to late for me to personally feel for those characters because I wanted someone to die.

Do really hope that they keep dead people dead, since I don't like characters coming back to live (it just lose all the impact of the death in the first place)

You do know that there was death before Ace and Whitebeard, that effect the main characters. (it happen mostly in flashbacks) Anyway, those deaths effect the main characters and the world

Also I don't get why you don't care because no one die, if people is dying left and right then I don't care anymore

This conversation will eventually lead to nowhere. I just know it.

The only reason this pissed me off is I just finished this drawing last week. It was supposed to be a 10 year jump on Rock Lee and Pals... Now I have to use a shit load of white out.

Jinbeifan1on Dec. 22, 2012 at 10:41 a.m.

nejis death had little to no meaning to me. He has barely done anything story related since before shippuden. when he died I was only thinking... oh hes dead huh? but then again i dont like naruto and very few people in the show will mean anything to me when they die. only people ill actually care for is probably rock lee or.... i guess thats it lol! one piece kicks ASS! cant wait for One Piece film Z to get out of theaters so I can torrent it! lol

ekroloon Dec. 23, 2012 at 2:49 p.m.

I wish Neji had more of a relevance to the story before he died so his death could be a real WTF moment, but he like most of the Konoha 11 were tossed aside for the Naruto/Sasuke and Akatsuki plots, and Kishimotos track record of dealing with deaths makes it very unlikely that Neji wont be ressurected soon, I just hope he doesnt ressurect Jiraya because then I would be really pissed.

@ekrolo:

Yeah, Neji's death is kind of arbitrary since he and Naruto were never very close. Only thing I can think of is his death will be motivation for Hinata to stand up and help Naruto. Something to bring them together. Unfortunately, I'm worried that Naruto will just hand Neji's body to Hinata.

Whitelockon Dec. 25, 2012 at 3:24 p.m.

He never really did much, but I liked Neji.

With him gone the only character I like who's still alive is Sasuke.
