AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 552 Review

It sure takes a lot of arrogance to steal a person's car then drive by their house.

That's cold, Cang Du.

The greatest vulnerability of the Quincy has been revealed thanks to the efforts of one enigmatic genius.

The Good

Shineiyaku, only use as directed by a former 12th Squad Captain.

If there was something that always irritated by about Uryu, it was his unjustifiable sense of arrogance and superiority. Originally, I thought that just happened to be his personality. Seems it's something shared among the Quincy. The Vandenreich's plan to have the Captains only to be killed by their own bankai is a risky move. It's not surprising it comes back to bite them.

Leave it up to good ol' Kisuke to find the biggest vulnerability of the Quincy and put it to his advantage. The Quincy don't just hate the Hollows because they're murderous, soul eating monsters. They're poison to them. This revelation also nicely clears up an issue I had with Masaki's wound during the flashback portion a little ways back.

I hesitate to really call this a positive, but there was something about that scene of Matsumoto in this chapter that shocked me. At first, I was certain she's still alive. That was up until I remembered this is the finale. There is every possible chance that she could be killed here. I would hate for her to have such an end, but that possibility give me a cold chill down my spine. I'm actually worried about her fate.

The Bad

This was a pretty chatty issue where not a great deal happened. It's not that Urahara and Kurotsuchi's dialog wasn't entertaining and informative. I just would have liked a bit more show and a little less tell.

Verdict 4/5

For as little that happened this chapter, this was still pretty entertaining. I think that has a lot to do with the personalities at hand. Urahara and Kurotsuchi are rather unique characters that seem to play well off one another. One of the best parts is how the chapter closes up. It's been a while that we really end on a real high tone for the good guys. I'm very much excited to see where this goes next.

I'm getting a little tired of Kisuke Deus Ex Machina-ing out of nowhere and solving everything from the shadows. I wish I knew more about what was up with what he was doing behind the curtains. It was a pretty interesting and clever "weakness reveal" for lack of a better term I'll give it that and I like how it developed the Quincy's motivation to hate and want to kill Hollows. But I have a hard time believe that the Quincy's seemingly sole Trump Card (stealing Bankai) has been foiled only 2 fights into what I imagine will be fierce multi-battle filled full out war. I was certain that this development would last well into the arc and be the main crux of the Shinigami v Quincy war.

The explanation for the Quincy weakness seems much more convoluted than necessary. I have to read it again, but I definitely didn't get it on my first read through.

It makes sense to me. Seems Yhwach bred the Quincy in such a way that they would fear the Hollow on an instinctive level. Hollows are poisonous to them. Everything in their body repels them. As far as they see it, Hollows exist only to kill them.

@FoxxFireArt:

I was thinking more about how Urahara was able to put some of that hollow energy into the captains and restore their bankai which then automatically defeats the quincy.

Several leaps in the fictional logic had to be made. I still haven't reread it yet though.

You're unclear how a guy who's researched Hollowfication for over a decade figured out how to make a pill that temporarily hollowfy the bankai? The pill gives them hollow power for a short time. In a sense, he gave them the Resurrección, the Hollow version of bankai. That is poison to Quincy.

To put it more bluntly: I don't get how the pill can "give" them hollow power for a short period of time. The past chapters have stated how bad it is to mess up the balance of the "life-forces" but now Urahara is just giving it away.

I also don't get the science of the medallion. If the Quincy can take the bankai and use it even if the shinigami dies, then why does the shinigami absorbing hollow energy have anything to do with the bankai in the medallion? The shinigami has lost control of the bankai at that point so the shinigami reiatsu should not affect the stolen bankai, right? If the shinigami DOES still have some control of the bankai, then they should be able to absorb their reitsu back from the medallion.

I know it's fictional science so I shouldn't be spending much time analyzing it, but I was really interested in the way Kubo was tying everything in the series together. I wonder how much of this was planned and how much was made up as he continued the series.

Do you hold all fiction to this level scrutiny? Most pills only effect the body for a limited amount of time. Sometimes only a few hours. I don't think I've ever heard of a pill where the effect was permanent.

I ok with this explain, it a fiction universe and also Urahara have been shown to make stuff really fast (still wondering why he isn't in Zero Division).

But it do bring up more questions, on how Kirge Opie can absorb a full Hollow.
