AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 538 Review

What do women and Asauchi have in common? They both respond to confidence.

Hail to the king, baby.
Hail to the king, baby.

With a new resolve, Ichigo has returned to complete the training to reforge his zanpakutō, and the Soul Society is in preparation for the battle to come.

The Good

I choose, you.
I choose, you.

I'm highly appreciative that the issue of Ichigo and the Asauchi is summed up so succinctly. I long tired of the issue of Ichigo fighting over the issue of king-of-the-hill with his Hollow self. Kubo could have easily drawn out the training as he was thrown into in the Phoenix Palace a second time. -- He's dragged out so many other scenes through this arc. -- Yet, this battle is settled even before Oh-Etsu can finish talking. It's an appropriately bad-ass moment for the hero.

The Bad

The most negative thing about this chapter, for me at least, was the montage of Soul Reapers in training. I find it hard to believe all these lost bankai are gone forever. I would have appreciated more time with Ichigo, or even a 'what just happened' moment with Ikumi, after she saw Ichigo spirited away. Others may like these segments more than I did, and that would be valid. I think it may just be that I don't care much for the characters that do appear.

Maybe I need to go back and re-read some of the earlier chapters, but I don't quite understand why the Vandenreich aren't attacking? Your enemy is on the ropes, but they're being allowed time to train and prepare for the next fight. To bring up a boxing analogy. If your opponent is off balance. You don't give him a minute to get his footing to punch you back harder.

Verdict 3/5

I don't know what happend to Kubo, but BLEACH has become so much more streamlined these past few weeks. I can only guess his editor has started to put his feet to the fire. This was a good chapter with some nice moments early on. I just wish more time would've been dedicated to Ichigo, rather than some gossiping of nameless Soul Reapers.

When Ichigo made his choice it was a pretty badass moment. Naruto and Bleach have made a complete switch in terms of what series I am looking forward to the (seeming) conclusion to.

Dig Deeper into Bleach

Bleach tells of the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki. Ichigo's a fifteen year old that could see ghosts. One day he obtain the power of a Shinigami and now protects the spirits on Earth that have yet to move on.
