AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 535 Review

Kisuke Urahara truly is the Reed Richards of the manga.

It's not like you can go somewhere for a second opinion.
It's not like you can go somewhere for a second opinion.

Time is growing short for the fate of Masaki Kurosaki, and Isshin is left with a choice that has no positive end for him. Except maybe a future wife and three kids.

The Good

I'm not going to try to pretend to be this big FANTASTIC FOUR fan, but I did see the movie. Partly becasue of Jessica Alba. However, I have been well aware of the joke that Reed Richards is a completely ridiculous character. Not due to his Luffy-esque skill set, but that he always seems to have the exact invention needed to do whatever task is required at the time. Why? Because he's a genius. That's exactly what I see in Urahara. As a reader, we're expected to believe that he has just the right invention needed at just the right time. By sheer coincidence, he happens to have this incredibly unique gigai that will help prevent Masaki from entering Hollowfication.

The chapter was almost like a medical drama. It's a tough decision that Ryuken is hearing. He obviously admires Masaski on a level, but it's such a painful choice to accept. It's a hard pill to swallow to hear from a doctor that you can never go back to the way you were before some illness or injury. More so when it comes to someone who is so young. You have to give it to Isshin who just jumps in to basically be the 'donor' of the catalyst that will save her life. He would be ashamed if she suffered just becasue he didn't want to be inconvenienced. Now, that's a man.

The Bad

It sometimes surprises me on how large the female readership is for BLEACH. Partly becasue the series doesn't treat their female cast incredibly well. Masaki is shown to be this powerful character at such a young age, but all that power is just going to be lost. I'm just left wondering why the Visored came out of this even more powerful than they were, and Masaki has to lose all of it. However, maybe it's becasue she's a Quincy that she could never control it, and that's why Ichigo in turn could never seem to keep his Hollow on a tight leash. He's part Quincy.

In this chapter, Kisuke says he's been researching Hollowfication for a century and been banished from the Soul Society. Though, I don't think 'banished' really qualifies when he ran away. I'm sure they'd love to have him back, so they could throw him into a cell. That's besides the point. Does this mean that Kisuke and the Visored have been there for 100 years of Earth history and no one in Japan noticed, or is this 100 years of Soul Society time? I really need to stop thinking about what the time difference is between Earth and the Soul Society. If Kubo isn't going to think about it, then why should I?

Verdict 4/5

I'm glad that the answer as to why Masaki could be killed by Grand Fisher is explained, but I'm not surprised that it's rather unsatisfying. It has some problems, but you can't hold too tight a grip on what's realistic when you're dealing with something so fictitious. I enjoyed the characters, the drama that was created in the choice to save Masaki, and I admire Isshin's reasoning for stepping up. It was a good chapter.

Hate to break this to you all, but there wont be any ONE PIECE, NARUTO, or BLEACH reviews next week due to the Golden Week break.

Urahara ALWAYS has the solution. In fact he never DIDN'T have the solution he was just waiting for the problem to come up. I am still bewildered about why Soul Society would be against Urahara trying to understand the Hollowfication process. It's dangerous work, but I would much rather understand something dangerous than pretend it doesn't exist.

Also, I have surmised that Kubo is winging it at this point so trying to question any recent plot points is useless. He is at least being consistent with his weak female characters.

I think he has been winging it from the beginning...I mean bleach has never been a bastion of self consistency.

@Lurkero:

It's becasue Kisuke was the scapegoat of Aizen. Remember that a lot of people died in the Soul Society and several captains were infected. Those infected were going to be killed, and Kisuke was going to be tossed into jail if he had stayed.

Those infected couldn't control themselves until Kisuke thought up a way later on Earth. There was no benefit to be seen by the Soul Society at the time.

Duno about the manga but anime wise its not bad consistency .Movies an filler muddy the waters tho an cause confusion.

Also reguarding the healdine KisukeUraharais actualy a far better character thanhttp://www.comicvine.com/mr-fantastic/4005-2151/ at least personality wise .An that counts for points up till the bathing suite competion at least.

@Marshal Victory
Oh yeah, Kisuke is far better a character. I just felt there was a comparison.

@FoxxFireArt: he may i say may not be as inteligent as " Mr . Fantastic " but he has beter tactics by far an seems a better fellow all around. I mean "Mr Fantastic " i think is ment to be a irony . Hes supose to be the smartest man on earth.. yet he cant keep his wife from looking at other guys ( namor , doom etc etc) .Just never liked his arogance an miss the obvious.

I would go so far as to say KisukeUrahara probly could best Doom. Since he has plans an back up plans an a bit of foresight "Mr Fantastic " seems to lack.Did i mention i dont like Reed Richards? hehe.

@Marshal Victory:

Doom wouldn't stand a chance against Urahara. For one, Urahara doesn't hesitate to kill. Top that with the power of Benihime, and Doom is doomed.

He has a knack for solving problems through research, I agree with this statement.

Eh I don't know in the anime we have the fact supposedly the hollows destroy human souls but then you release the hollow and send them back to the spirit world (what happens then to the souls they eat? never explained). What exactly is different about what the quincy's do and where do there powers come from (never explained) Where main characters powers come from is explained but his friends...I don't know where they get there's. And then there is the normal shonen problem with power level inconsistency.

Maybe I am being unfair in comparing it to sci-fi literature by Arthur C. Clarke, and such but I mean even Game of Thrones is really more self consistent. *shrug* For anime I would say even Eva is and lord knows THAT has major plot issues

Marshal Victoryon May 11, 2013 at 5:58 p.m.

@zaldar: hmm i just figured the souls were consumed .Also once crossed over to a hollow they didnt come back either.

zaldaron May 11, 2013 at 7:23 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: Problem with this is that at least in the beginning when they killed a hollow they "released" it had to hit it with the butt of the sword..and this was the major bone they had with the Quincy's as they were "killing" the hollow. Then this was never really mentioned again.

Marshal Victoryon May 11, 2013 at 7:29 p.m.

@zaldar: Yeah now that ya mention it thats right. Anime was fairly long an i had forgoetn that.Wonder if it was because of filer on the anime it got droped.Have heard of anime afecting the manga before.Which seems wrong.
