AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 525 Review

Where do dead people go when they die?

Is the final arc really the best time for an origin story?
Is the final arc really the best time for an origin story?

A deeper look into the past and minds of two of the most viscous killers in Soul Society history.

The Good

This isn't as awkward as it sounds.
This isn't as awkward as it sounds.

This chapter really builds upon the ground work they put together last week, but it also repeats what we already knew. Unohana is striking Kenpachi down to make him bigger and badder. While the story between these beasts is terrifying in its own way. It's also tragic in the most twisted sense of the word. He's been holding himself back for a few thousand years based upon both his drive for combat and admiration of his first true opponent. He doesn't want to be the strongest if it means being alone. Probably the closest the guy has ever come to a sense of "love".

Seeing Kenpachi emerging from the pile of corpses. It reminded me of some questions I've always wondered about the BLEACHmythology. If everyone in the Soul Society is dead, how can they even die? Where do they go after that? I can't imagine it destroys the soul. That would throw the universe out of balance eventually. Are they just reborn into the physical world? While I'm on the topic. If thezanpakuto cleans the sins of the Hollows. Where are the souls of all the Arrancar that have fallen in battle? I demand to see an adorably drawn graph on how Rukia explains all of this.

The Bad

Will Unohana fall just so Kenpachi can rise ?
Will Unohana fall just so Kenpachi can rise ?

Unohana is a character that's always stood in the background. Now, she's in the spotlight and has never been so fascinating. Something about the idea that she's going to sacrifice herself to make Kenpachi stronger feels borderline offensive. Doesn't this series have overpowered dudes? I'll be pretty irritated with Kubo if she'll just be left to the darkness for eternity. However, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if after cutting her down that Kenpachi will bring her to Isane to heal. He's a vicious monster, but with a soft streak.

Verdict 4/5

While I enjoy this look at the past of Kenpachi. It seems like an awkward time to be telling the story of someone's origin. Having said that. It still didn't deter my enjoyment of both the art and story. I can't even imagine the kind of demon Kenpachi will become once he emerges from the prison, but I'm very excited to see who's the first unlucky enemy to feel his wrath.

Kubo actually did explain what happens when shinigami die. I don't remember exactly when, but very early in the series it was explained that, if you don't go to Hell, when you "die" in the afterlife, you're sent into the ether to be reborn as a human baby.

Or that could just be the rationalization I came up with when I realized this problem, I don't remember.

You are right, they get reborn when they die. That was a plot point a few chapters ago, when Mayuri kill a lot of Soul Society's citizens to keep the balance

@zaldar:

Kubo did explain (somewhat) how the world works and have foreshadow some things to. He did plan out stuff out

Anyway, I like this chapter. The art is good and it explain some stuff

I know it's not realistic for this to not be explained, but how can you resist asking the question, "Where do dead people go when they die?" Isn't it just morbid that you have to kill the souls in the Soul Society for them to be reborn. Who decides that? I'd have to imagine that just like the Konsou, there is a gentler way.

Well, we saw some of the Espada were in Hell. What became of the Espada that weren't that bad? Not all of them were wicked people. Shouldn't they have been sent to Soul Society.

lol its funny that kubo came up with a way to defend why ichigo beat kenpachi the first time they fought if kenpachi was susposed to be super monster strong, and then he comes back to fight espada five when he was clearly weaker than ichigo and he still won. that always bothered me. I'm pretty sure he just pulled this explanation out of his ass but what do i know.

all and all nice chapter. its funny that they are only working on kenpachi and not the other captains. i'd also like some story progression but eh..
