AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 519-520 Review

The theme of these chapters seems to be "hurry up and wait."

Finally, No Soul Reaper Left Behind works for someone.
Finally, No Soul Reaper Left Behind works for someone.

As Ichigo enjoys a nice, platonic dalliance in the baths of Tenjirou Kirinji, Shunsui Kyouraku is promoted to head Soul Reaper, but he has a demand to make Kenpachi Zaraki even more powerful than he once was. No worries. He knows just the man - - I mean woman to keep him in line. The first Kenpachi.

The Good

Okay, you have my attention, Ms. Unohana.
Okay, you have my attention, Ms. Unohana.

Shunsui Kyouraku is an unlikely candidate for leadership of the Gotei 13 in the absence of Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai, but isn't that what makes fiction great. Doing what everyone expected is boring. It's also plausible enough given how many were either immobilized or robbed of their bankaiduring the invasion. I also greatly enjoyed watching as Shunsui gave a scolding to the bureaucratic of the Central 46. No one better take Nanao away from Shunsui, damn it.

Don't let it ever be said that there aren't any strong women in shonen manga. I contest that they are too strong. So much so that you have to wait till the finale to display said power. Am I making some of that? Maybe,...but here we are. Retsu Unohana was the first to hold the name Kenpachi. We finally understand why her quite demeanor could disarm anyone who would dare defy her...requests. She apparently has the power to tame the unrelenting strength of the current Kenpachi.

I remember back when this arc was beginning. I read about an interview with Tite Kubo that he would actually answer the question about the woman Kenpachi named Yachiru after. Well, the answer has been presented, but Kubo had better answer the question about Yoruichi's missing zanpakuto and her bankai at some point. I also hope Tier Halibel gets freed to join this final battle.

The Bad

It's a naked butt joke. It's funny, right?
It's a naked butt joke. It's funny, right?

I have to have a leap in logic that a bath intending to heal actually rots the bodies, but......whatever. Sillier things have happened in this series alone. The whole concepts seems to exist to further point out that the protagonist is a nigh invulnerable dude. The baths of Tenjirou Kirinji also seem to be opening the door to reviving Rukia and Byakuya.

If you were hoping that Ichigo wasn't going to spend the final arc of the series training up yet again to the point where he needs to come to the rescue. That doesn't seem to be happening. The BLEACHcycle continues.

Verdict 4/5

Hail to the King, baby.
Hail to the King, baby.

Much of the past two chapters have been kind of mundane, but the revelations that Kenpachi is going to be taught the art of the sword and Unohana is the first Kenpachi was a saving grace. That's far more interesting than the grand reveal of the Spirit King, Mr. Starry Eyes.

shonen action manga are always funny when it comes to this kind of continuity. For some reason these powerful characters are being revealed now when not too long ago there was a war going on and the shinigami could have used their help. What are they holding back for?

Man, it seem like the only smart thing Soul Society did was giving Ichigo that badge and his powers back. I really wondering how Soul Society have been standing for all this time LOL!

The Zero Squad explained that the reason they didn't come to Soul Society to fight in the war was that their job was to protect the royal palace, not SS.

Not much to say but I thought the medic lady being the first Kenpachi was so bad it's good. The more insane the trainwreck known as Bleach gets, the better. I also enjoyed how the the translation I read said that the Soul King has "fallen" for Ichigo. New shipping option?

Plot convenience.

Having Unohana being a secret badass has actually been telegraphed for a long time. I actually love that moment. It just then makes a plot hole about why they never had her fight when the whole Soul Society was at risk.

I guess they made her a medic to explain why she always stayed behind.

They have yet to show yachiru's(kennys little side kick) release that bothers me somehow..she was a child prodigy just like hitsuguya so she should be strong but not one fight to date. And now ikkaku has replaced her as 2nd seat soo hmm

I can't wait for Kenpachi to learn the art of killing! that's gonna be awesome! also it was great that they revealed that Unohana was the first Kenpachi and is also the woman that Kenpachi admires the most.

I would have guessed that Unohana was 11th company based on her cimbat skills but not that she was a Kenpachi, yet alone the 1st Kenpachi and that she is the name basis for Yachiru. Now I want to see how Unohana went from combat to healing. One thing I do like about ch.519 is that tumblr has lovingly nicknamed it 'PeachGate'

@ouchmydragonballs: yeah but that is a crazy crazy parsing of duty though. I mean seriously if the US mainland was invaded and it seemed like we were about to fall the secret service would come to the fight...
