An emaciated, half-formed skeleton giant, eh? I’ll go ahead and predict that Eren’s ability to Hulk-out into a Titan will come at the price of him needing a commiserate amount of fuel with a terrible price tag. That fuel might be actual flesh - - meaning he’ll have to chomp on a disgusting amount of Titans, cattle or * GASP * human beings - - or it might pure, unbridled rage (which would push the Hulk comparison even further, no?)
Typing all that out helps me process this twist a little better. Now that I’ve gotten past the initial surprise and had some time to think about it, it seems does seem more fitting as development. It’s a shock, to be sure, but not a cheap one, and it’s already given this saga an intriguing, ironic dimension. What’s exciting, and a little scary, to consider is that this will probably won’t be the last of the switchback turns in this show. Why, I’m predicting the plot structure’s going to look like a long, violent zigzag by the time we’re done.
I haven’t felt this way about an anime since… DEATH NOTE, actually, and that’s obviously no coincidence. This show even has the same kind of weirdly-specific dream logic as that show. (If other talent were involved, I doubt we’d have a scene that’d actually show Eren milling about in the bile-filled stomach of the Titan that swallowed him).
Actually, while it’s not substantial enough to be much of a prediction, I do suspect that this story’s weaving together some larger statement about professional competency. There was such a hoodoo about how the most able recruits were going to beats they were needed least in, already. Now, we’re getting an episode with the double whammy of an elite unit’s intro and some M.P. schmucks bothering our heroes because they’re too stupid to read the situation. I don’t know what the point is, yet, but TITAN’s definitely building up to it.
