ATTACK ON TITAN #18 - - Watch & Learn

Strategies don't work! Ooooh!

So we’ve got Eren, Armin and Erwin, now? Wonderful. They won’t be hard to mix up in dialog, at all.

This episode puts a fine point on why I had less patience for the amount of ‘tactical exposition’ we’ve had to sit through over the past few episodes (and why I have less patience for any serious discussion of power levels, in general). Levi has an absolutely lucid strategy, here, luring the female Titan into the forest. The 3D gear is all-but-useless on an open field with nothing elevated to grapple onto, and the Titans have a much greater advantage there, because they have plenty of room to move around in and an unobstructed view to spot humans.

In the logic of the story, the team should have completely switched the balance of this battle to their favor by changing the location. Instead, the show just junks that for the sake of the story. We see the Female Titan continue to stalk our heroes with just as much as ease, swatting guardsmen like flies and plowing through giant evergreens like they were made of cardboard.

On the one hand, that bolsters TITAN as a horror. The Titans get the same kind of menace that Jason Voorhees and the Terminator exude when they just shrug off any number of death traps that should’ve killed them.

On the other hand, it makes it harder not to see how irrelevant all the screen time devoted to 'shop talk' is. I knew that when they were laying out all the attack plans for the last battle. You only show the heroes succeeding, hypothetically, because you’re then going to show them failing when they actually go ahead with it.

Well, I’ve already seen this trick before, so it’s harder for me to sit patiently while it's set-up a second or third time.

Watch this episode, "Forest of Giant Trees - 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls" here and decide for yourself, then read my write-up on the previous episode here.

Agreed this was a good set up for horror .The stress the characters felt was well depicted. But tactic wise its a sound bet.An with all good tactics you have a back up plan.

Or has the naked female titian "cute ass" had to much screen time?

metalsnakezeroon Aug. 19, 2013 at 10:06 p.m.

Don't worry Tom. Attack on Titan is no fool with set ups.

I hate to be one of those who say, "It eventually gets explained"... but it does! There is a real sense of payoff to this series which lessor shows lack. Either way, I think your assessment is spot on. There are large parts of AOT that feel unnecessarily padded to fill it's 25 episode run. I just wonder what's going to happen when they catch up with the source material. That said, there are also long periods of AOT that are excellently written and viscerally exciting. It reminds me of what anime as a medium is capable of.

No, it's not. I don't see it it can be unless you have a hearing impediment.

The problem is that you're not listening to their names being said. You're reading the subtitles as quick as you can while trying not to miss the frantic action on screen.

If it's the spelling of the names that is causing confusion, that holds even less water. There is no excuse for any mix up involving Armin and Eren/Erwin, given the emphasis placed on the first letter of an english word as per our reading habits. In addition, context makes it hard for me to imagine even Eren and Erwin ever being being mixed up by people.

@Turambar: All I'm saying is that I can understand why someone would mix up the character's names. Aside from a select few favorites, I can't remember any of the character name's from the shows I watch. Most of the time I just refer to them as "pink haired girl" or "whiny guy." To have similar character names mixed with similar character designs is just a mess to sort out during a discussion.

While I would agree with the bolded segment, that is not the case here.

@Turambar: See, I think we have different opinions on this matter, and I respectfully disagree with your assessment. When I'm watching the show week-to-week, I run into this very problem. When I'm marathoning the show, obviously this problem is alleviated.

AOT definitely seems padded in some spots, but I think Levi was unaware that they were facing an abberant. Because of that he didn't know that the usual tactics wouldn't work in this case.

It's clearly repetition of similar sounds. You can look at the names all you want and say that they are different, but to the casual viewer those names can run into each other.

I have a feeling female titan is searching for Eren to ask him how to get out of that thing.

takashichea moderator on Aug. 20, 2013 at 8:55 p.m.

@Marshal Victory:

Reiner would agree to that.

All these smoke and tactical talk are just stalling. The animation is a bit weird in the female Titan fight. Hoping to get more action.

Marshal Victoryon Aug. 21, 2013 at 12:31 a.m.

@takashichea: It will .Not wanting to spoil things but this is a build up to a decent pay off i think.Tho any one could argue maybe one episode to long in the build up.

Then again they may have streched it out a bit cause its easyer to animate the forest than a city to?
