At Long Last! Zetsubou-Sensei Officially Licensed

Media Blasters confirms a long-standing rumor.

It came out as a rumor AGES ago-- back in July '09, even --that Media Blasters had the license to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and to Moyashimon. And finally finally FINALLY the rumor was confirmed with Media Blasters' May 2010 solicitations: the first volume of Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei will be released on May 25th, five episodes for $19.99 (says AICN Anime).

UPDATE: From both Robert's Anime Corner Store and Right Stuf comes word that it'll be SIX episodes, not five-- half of the first season. (You can preorder it and other May titles from Media Blasters right now, btw.)

There's no word on Moyashimon for now, but man, I'm so excited for Zetsubou-sensei that I do not even care. At all. Let's throw a party! Here, I'll be in charge of the music.

For those of you not already familiar with the series (and you should be, because Del Rey Manga has been releasing the manga at a steady clip), Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a dark comedy about an eternally pessimistic teacher whose name can be read "Zetsubou" instead of Nozomu Itoshiki, and his unique array of (mostly female) students-- including an eternal optimist, an obssessive-compulsive girl, a girl with a fetish for tails, a fujoshi, and many others. It's good times.

For everyone else: party time in the comments!

While I'm not a big fan of the series, I'll at least give congrats to fans of the show for finally being able to have an opportunity to get it here in the states.

I remember reading the first chapter of the manga and wasn't really into it. Maybe because most of the humor in that one was about the pun with his name written in Japanese, so it kind of went over my head. I like me some dark comedies though so i will have to give it another shot some time.

Oh god I hope the don't do singles. They should know better than that after GaoGaiGar failed in singles. Stick to half and full season box sets.

YES!

5 eps for 20 bucks is a pretty good deal.  But yes, it's a strange episode placement.....  Maybe they will, as suggested, combine it with Zoku.
Anyway, this is great news, because the anime is fantastic.  It's hilarious.  Though it's really hard to keep up with how fast paced everything is.  I wonder if they'll be doing a dub?  The Japanese voices are so spot on, seeing it in English would be odd.  Never mind the amount of line editing they'd have to do because of how freakishly fast the dialog is in the show.

Oh, whoops. Saw the next tweet. There IS a dub listed....  I kind of wish there wasn't.  It's not the type of show that's going to appeal to people who aren't really into anime.....

I read the first two books, and I like them best out of any comedy manga I've read since I started work here at AV.  Depression and despair jokes FTW.  Also love the girl who sends mean texts ("U KNO UR JUST A PANTYSHOT CHARACTER").  Dub-fan that I am, I'm definitely interested in checking out the DVD.  The faster and more awkward the english translation, the better.  Just adds to the wackiness.

5 episodes for $20 is in line with what they have done with the Genshiken release so I'm not too upset by it, seems to work for them anyways.

WOOT.  I didn't think this was going to happened but  I love it.

Media Blasters really needs to stop it with the Single volume releases.  Their outdated and overpriced.   They need to switch to the half season sets.  Anyways good to know this got a license.  Sorta expected Funimation or Sentai to grab this.

I'll wait until the release a set or the singles end up in a bargain bin somewhere.

I've never seen Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei so much as a dark comedy. I see it as more satirical. Often times pointing out and mocking some of the odd things people do in life.

Del Rel really publishes this series well. It should be interesting to see how this is dubbed.
