ARGEVOLLEN #1 -- Special Review

Well, I can say the suit looks cool, at least.

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

Half the time, it feels like the suit in a mecha suit is an actual product, and the show’s been constructed to sell that product in about the same way that BMW tried to sell you cars by having Clive Owen drive them around on various missions.

Which is maybe an overly abstract way of saying that a lot of mech shows feel really interchangeable after a while…

We joke a lot about the Rock or Suck scale but - - if I’m to put my serious face on for a second - - I’ll readily acknowledge that plenty of series land somewhere in the perfectly-adequate middle than on either extremity of quality. I’m a lot less interested these days in a serious military SF exploration of how warfare between giant robo suits would play out, tactically. Still, even despite that, I felt like this snippet of ARGEVOLLEN was a perfectly fine way to kill a half-hour. The future history isn’t that distinct, and the all-too-earnest lead and his collection of hot blooded female associates aren’t that memorable, but they do the job they’re supposed to do; and there’s something admirable about a show being that workmanlike.

Hell, I even got into the segments where legions of identical CG armors are running into eachother, and that’s usually where I check out. Their other-ness actually integrates well into the scenery, and the show adroitly keeps things simple when setting up their fight. We don’t get bogged down in a history lesson. We don’t have to listen to self-serious battlefield philosophizing. The shows gets straight to what you’ve come for, and again, there’s something admirable in being that direct.

While I don’t feel compelled to follow ARGEVOLLEN along on this campaign, I think I owe it a respectful salute, at least.

Watch "Encounter" and decide for yourself.

Argevollen has props for their war theme from me. Thats alll I can say. Its a realistic break from main char = instant victory scenarios.

Serious face suits ya more Tom.

Show has some generic roots sure enuff. But so far for me its been more than the sum of those generic parts. Main character is not a natural born ace. He makes mistakes an gets into trouble for them. The attacking side does not seem like its motives are good at all. But not all of them seem evil. Where as the defending side has a deep baka filled bench of Generals that are generally useless.

Can you make comparisons off of the pilot episode to other mech shows? Well ya easy enuff. But as it goes on it becomes more than generic. It becomes its own story not stolen story parts. Design wise , Illustration wise an animation wise its well above average. An the pilot episode was probably the worst of the episodes out now.

Argevollen is just generic. Its pilot wasn't spectacular and unique nor it wasn't boring or disturbing. I compared it to Valvrave whose pilot just reeled me with that shocking ending. Some folks calls Valvrave's pilot messy.

What Argevollen did better than some mech shows is that the teenage protagonist actually has military training. It's not like Valvrave or some other mech shows where teenage heroes miraculously control mechs without any proper military training.

Looks to be a decent show. However, ALDNOAH ZERO fills in the needed change in mech series this season.

Argevollen is perfectly middle. I've watched 2 eps, and I have never hated it. Still, the main character does not feel important. I like that he's stumbling and actually has to become a hero, though. It's better than someone hopping into a suit for the first time and knowing it like the back of his hand

@metalsnakezero:

You're not just an Aldnoah Zero fan because it has Zero in the title? :) Aldnoah Zero is definitely the winner for me. I like how Inahao is such a cold, calculating dude. If the Martians weren't so evil, I'd feel sorry for them.

I'm also wondering what's going to happen to Slaine. We can all guess what side he's going to fall on. But when?

zaldaron July 27, 2014 at 7:07 p.m.

Nope give me the battlefield philosophizing of Eva (where they stole the title) over the workman likeness of this anyday. Way to many older shows that are classic I have yet to see or games, movies, other art forms with classic things I haven't seen for me to waste time with a middenling show I know is middeling before I start.

YotaruVegetaon July 28, 2014 at 9:46 a.m.

@zaldar: Argevollen=Evangelion? OK. It's fine to live in stretch world.

You can't know a show is middling before you watch it. You'd have to watch it to know for sure.

Dig Deeper into Argevollen
