It hard to say when is the right time to re-make a series. Ones that don't really work are series that already had a really good run like Rurouni Kenshin and Evangelion. One Piece is lucky to avoid being filler heavy (Since the creator had some extra writing to add in) so it doesn't need to be remade.

Remakes are necessary. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime is coming xD, and well this time a complete Phantom Blood, not like the previous OVAs that cut a lot of stuff, like Speedwagon

Evangelion has benefited greatly from the new movies. I can honestly say I like them better than the original.

You vice guys and your video hi jinx haha....yeah your video made its point loud and clear.

but tbh with Kenshin, although the Kyoto arc is the best i feel like the entire Kenshin anime shoulda been done from start to finish condensing the story and trimming the fat, leaving it being an 52 episode series rather than a 90+ episode one.

There are a few good stories before and even after the Kyoto arc that can be handled better with retelling. Having this single movie just highlight the best part of the series kinda feels like a cop out to me.....but hey it may bring new people into the franchise so it may be a good thing in that aspect.....time will tell

I actually have rather mixed feelings about the kenshin ova's. i think i would have liked to see the fights the whole way through instead of them jumping around and around and around then coming back to them laying there done fighting. but i enjoyed the ova i just didnt too much care for that part. I also think they should have made the WHOLE thing over but thats just wishful thinking lol

Oh and as for FMA for me i loved both series i felt like when brotherhood came out it was just like seeing a friend you havent seen in a while and your excited to kick back and have fun. FMA is probably one of my favorites to date so i would have enjoyed them coming back for any occasion to bake freaking cookiesand i still would have been excited. Just like on eureka 7 Ao when you see eureka i almost peed my pants because its been so long!

Eureka 7 AO is a sequel to Eureka 7, not a remake.

I think it depends on the anime if it gets remaked, Hellsing Ultimate and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are good examples of remakes done right.

    Dream moderator on Oct. 1, 2012 at 9:12 p.m.
It depends on how the original anime title was adapted. FMA's first series was a case where the older version was better for me as Brotherhood/ the original manga was a more conventional title compared to the complex characterization and storytelling used for the 2003 anime's original developments of the first series.

But there are cases where the newer take can be better. Take for example, Kanon. While the 2003 adaptation of the visual novel was a decent one and animated by Toei, the animation style was a bit on the rough side and a number of the character arcs were clearly compressed and skimped on some major details with said characters. With the 2006 remake animated by KyoAni, it had the benefit of better animation as details were more smooth, colors were quite vivid and had some nice animation sequences it demonstrated on occasions like Yuichi and Mai's ballroom dance in the middle of the series; as well as having a higher episode count at 24 episodes meaning more time to focus on characters in depth for their arcs compared to Toei's adaptation.

The need of a remake depends on whether or not the original stuck to the material through its run. But of course if companies see money to be made then they will do so. Some are good otherwise but I prefer the actual story compared to fluff. The Eva Rebuilds may not have been necessary but I hated the original series and am quite enjoying the new movies.

My feelings on Hellsing Ultimate have already been stated. I like the original FMA series but Brotherhood was a whole other experience and I loved it.

What some of you might not know is that the Freezing anime actually stuck to the material pretty well. There was some story left out, some of the final battles happened differently, some moments happened later in the manga, and the fanservice was ramped up a lot more than the manga. There is actually enough material for a second season.

Necessary is always an interesting word choice. This is just cartoons so i'd hesitate to call any of it "necessary". I do welcome a good one though, although if I've seen the old one I think a remake is a waste of time unless it's a reimagining.
    JiCion Oct. 3, 2012 at 5:33 a.m.

    Depend on the anime series...

If the remake makes the anime look better, less corny and stuck closer to the plot than the original, than it's all good. Character development wasn't much of a high point back in the days, so remakes tend to rectify that.

After seeing that Tatsunoko did with Casshern and Yatterman, I'd like them to tackle the Gatchaman series.

Um err umm remakes an ova can also be a way for them to try to dig into you wallet just one more time. Also that whole sorry George Lucas thing...

How did I miss this?! I thought I felt a faint tickle in the back of my mind the other day... It must have been Tom, thinking really hard about me.

    Awww.

I suppose I don't have too much to contribute here, but like Tom said, I do have two fancy articles talking about this very conundrum:

    PART 1

    PART 2

    PART 3 coming next week...

Done right, I think remakes are great ways to present a well-loved story from a new and exciting perspective. Done wrong and they become a blatant cash grab that, in a worst case, can even dilute previous releases. It's a dangerous game.

    SO DANGEROUS.

Dig Deeper into Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

Evangelion 1.0 is the first movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, it covers the events of episodes 1-6 of the anime, and it includes new animation with changes to the plot.
