Another New Gundam Anime Announced

It's a Gundam anime... about Gundam?!?!

Well, this sounds a lot more “meta” than I’d expect from Gundam. So, since the 30 anniversary of the original figure set (Gunpla, as the cool kids call it) is coming up soon, Bandai and Sunrise have got a number of things in the pipe to celebrate that. The most significant of these, according to ANN,  is a three-part anime that’s actually about a kid, from the real world, who’s Gunpla fan. He’s even got a wise older mentor who instructs him in the secrets of building Gunpla. Seriously. I suppose getting to do something so self-referential is the real measure of a series’ success and longevity. This is like Gundam’s equivalent of that FANBOYS movie.

Anyway, the series is titled MOKEI SENSHI GUNPLA BUILDERS BEGINNING G. The first part, appropriately titled “A” hits first at the Gundam Super Expo Event, then it’ll broadcast on Japanese TV in the summer. The other two parts, “B” & “C” will follow, accordingly. Starting in August, there’s also going to be a manga series running concurrently in Kerekero Ace magazine. I’m a little dubious over how many stories they can tell that aren’t actually about Gundam, but about kids playing with Gundam figures, but my impressions exist only to be confounded on a daily basis.

What do you think of this, oh Gunpla-building Anime Vice community? Are you exciting to see this meta-fictional take on mecha? Or do you think they’re really reaching too far with this premise?

These series have a half-life that kicks the butt of plutonium. I kind of lost interest in Gundam series after a while. I think the last one I watched seriously was the first season of Gundam Seed.

...I'll probably sit this one out. I like the action and the intrigue (sometimes) that the franchise has, but this just seems like it's aimed at kids.

...then they find out that Gunpla are real and they need the main characters to save the Gunpla world from the evil Gunpla King.

@oishi_47:

they then learn that an evil wizard is summoning The "Mass Movement of Masked men", and the main characters have to raise
the "Alliance of Angsty Main characters"
And a full battle occurs between MMMM and AAMC!

@Halberdierv2: Episode 1 of Unicorn came out not too long ago. I believe there are five more to go.

Worth checking out. Could be pretty funny for Gundam fans, or it could fall on its face.

@FoxxFireArt: You do realize that Plutonium has a half-life of about 24,000 years, right? So saying that their popularity half's faster than plutonium decays doesn't really mean much. I don't really particularly care much for a meta series like this either, but Gundam has had plenty of good OVA series mixed in with the not-so-great lately.

@HeeroYuy:
My statement was implying that the "half-life" of Gundam series is dramatically longer then Plutonium. Not shorter. It's in the context.
