Anime Vice at the End of 2012

Raw, heartfelt emotion just explodes out of Tom's chest! This is a reflection on where Anime Vice has been this year, a grateful thanks to all who've made it so fun, and an exciting tease of what's to come for the site!

As you might’ve surmised, I’ve been taking a little time off for the whole Christmastime/New Year spread. Maybe there should’ve been a post up last week, laying that all out for everybody in advance, but the holidays have a way of sneaking up on me. As in, I’ll wind up going right from being nose-deep in some late-night work to madly packing at 3 AM for a red eye flight I forgot I booked a couple months back. That’s just my M.O.

Luckily, the timing worked out such that we’ve got a Vice Pit video and a community-wide anime election to keep everybody busy in this interim. If timing continues to work out, we might have a review or two up, as well, but don’t expect business to get back to full steam here until the middle of next week, at the earliest.

Anyway, I don’t usually like to comment on things while I’m doing them. Or before I’m doing them. That’s another part of my M.O. (and all my social networking feeds are incredibly boring for it). However, we’ve got a little restful lacuna here, so some reflection seems appropriate…

2012 was full of surprises for Anime Vice. There’s no way not to understate it. Nothing is ever truly for certain in internet media, and I'm sure that will continue to be so. However, it has now been over half a year since Berman Braun’s offered me the opportunity to run the site as I saw fit, and this run as Anime Vice’s “Shogun," taken simply on its own, is something I’m proud of. It’s tough to revamp something whilst still trying to operate it at a regular clip, and I haven’t been able to implement everything I’d like to, yet; but come what may, I can honestly say this has been the most fun I’ve ever had doing this stuff.

The chief source of that fun, of course, is the VICE PIT - - the only anime talk show ever to be named after a Roddy Piper gimmick. I’ve wanted to have regular video content ever since I’ve started working for this site and, now that I’ve got my wish, I couldn’t have asked for a better co-host than Mr. Sam Weller. He's a talent-and-a-half, and every single one of these episodes - - from our ridiculous all-heroine dream team wishlists to our super-serious discussions about the metaphorical potential of robots - - have been an absolute hoot to make with the guy. I hope all our viewers see that, even when we’re doing our most stone-faced, somber deadpan during ridiculous call-ins for advice.

Sam and I are aiming to bring on more special guests and do more involved sketches with the VICE PIT in the new year. We’re also along in talks to bring the show to a large and very exciting new platform. When that platform hop happens, it’s going to coincide with our most ambitious and combative multi-part segment yet. I wish I could say more at this particular juncture, but it’s hopefully coming soon, and when it comes, it’s going to hit you all like a Spirit Bomb that’s been charged up for half a season.

This video's a fairly good representation of the sort of leveling-up that's about to happen...

If Sam’s a Vegeta to my Son Goku here, then my freelancers most definitely fill out a squad of galaxy-shaking Z-Fighters. Alexei reviewing every stripe of series, the gruesome twosome of Nick and Alex opining in OTAKU COMING HOME, and Whiskey alum Nick Robinson shimmying over from Revision3 for the occasional musing in BEHIND ANIME LINES - - all of them forming a spectacular crew.

And that fighting team wouldn't be complete without all of you users who have stuck with this site throughout its varied transitions. There are far too many of you for me to thank individually here, and I don’t get as much time to respond to everybody’s posts as I’d like (I do read all of them, though!) However, I want to especially single out the efforts of our mods - - sickVisionz, FoxxFireArt, Daniel_Newton and sora_thekey - - for their Mod Material. And I want to thank Takashichea and BigHeart711, as well, for respectively keeping logs of my WATCH & LEARN write-ups and every single episode of the Vice Pit. I produce this stuff every day, and even I'm daunted by how thorough they've been.

I also want to take this opportunity to pass on some proper kudos out to some old co-workers who’ve helped me get here. Whatever I’ve learned as an editor has come from following the examples set by the consummate professionals, Tony Guerrero and Matt Rorie. Behind the screens, marketing maven Daniel Miesner was always a patient and helpful sounding board for all the wacky ideas I'd have for the site, and I’m very grateful to Mike Tatum for giving me such a crucial and enthusiastic endorsement during the sites' transition.

And if there’s one guy at the root of all of this, it’s Whiskey co-founder, Ethan Lance. He’s the one who first had the idea to bring me into this site as the “noob” freaking out over weird anime. Before that, he was the one who saw something worthwhile in . Because of Red Lamp, I've been able to spend the past few years with a day job as a web personality, and that's something I'll ever be grateful for.

I call this a “day job” because, all throughout these developments for Anime Vice, I’ve been making some exciting strides in my “night job” as a scriptwriter. This year, I’ve written a few episodes of an animated series that should be coming to American TV sometime in 2013. We're actually about to start working on its second season already. I’ve also got a gig writing a comics special based on another series in the same vein, and I have a couple of my own projects in the pipe in addition to that.

Again, I don’t like to talk about anything until it’s ready to show (and, in most of these cases, I’m contractually barred from talking about them just yet), but believe me, you lunatics will be hearing about all of these when their time comes.

Since I’m fitting all of this script work into the hours I’m not running this website, most weeks of 2012 have really been an exercise in burning the proverbial candle at both ends (and maybe finding a third end to burn on the weeks when I’m also traveling to the seven or so cons I hit up every year). So you’ll see why even a few days off right now is a relief for me. I’m enjoying some rest, some quality time with my family and, if weather permits, hopefully some fun in the snow.

So there you go - - a word (or a thousand words) about myself and this site at the end of 2012. Thanks for continuing to put this lean operation in your browser Thanks for making Anime Vice's community such an awesome one.

I'll see you next year. The best really is yet to come.

It's been a great year. The BB shake up left things in a rocky state but I think the site has rebounded nicely. I wasn't around for the Gia/John-era so I can't compare it to that, but for me the site is the best it's ever been. I've never been into video content that isn't like episodes of stuff but the Vice Pit is something I look forward to and enjoy whenever it comes out. I can't wait to see what 2013 has in store. Perhaps a podcast?!?!?

Where's the "Like" button on this thing?!?! T_T

You're right the site has gone through some changes over time but it is a true testament of how tight the users, mods & staff (present and past) of AV are. Thanks for being so awesome Tom. 'Nuff Said

I have only been here a few months but I love it and the people! Going into 2013 I am glad to be able to share it with AnimeVIce. =) And awesome work on making this a ever changing and informative site to everyone who has a hand in that!

Elfenlied1012on Dec. 28, 2012 at 8:12 a.m.

Though I think were far from fully there I thank you Tom for keeping the site up. I really can't thank you enough for being the person who stabilized anime vice when it easily could have been left to rot. You saved and stabilized my favorite internet community so no matter how many times I disagree with your opinions on many anime based things you'll always have my thanks.

Thanks Tom, Sam, Nick, and Alexei! Great job everyone especially my teammates who working hard on the wiki projects and putting up new anime trailers this past year (at the same time, juggling school, family, and work). Also, kudos to the wiki editors who are going solo.

We are all lunatics here.

I wish I had more time to comment on the Vice Pit videos and front page news that the staff are working diligently on but the wiki pages and school are calling. I swear this is my News Years Resolution:

Comment more on the front page and tweet them!

Sorry for the double posting.

I like to make a personal shout-out.

I thank him for working on the Robotics;Notes project and posting trailers.

Thank you so much for lending me and with the K project and doing a fabulous job on the wiki pages.

He's a beast with some of the creative projects such as the #Profile Portraits, working on the wiki projects and making the wiki style awesome and innovative, and I thank him for smacking sense into me when I went crazy with some things I would not say this past year.

His community spotlights shine light on wiki editors working behind the scenes.

He and his crew did a phenomial job on the Legend of Korra wiki project. He was a machine. Each weekend, he goes boom and boom with the pages. He's quick as lightning.

I thank for him for inspirations in wacky ideas I had when I was out brainstorming. I did a lot of embarrassing blogs this year just to promote the wiki activity.

@sora_thekey: and

My Quick Picks teammates. We always pull through.

You breath life in the reviews. I wish I had time to put up reviews, but I don't have lot of self confidence in my commentary.

Thanks for putting together the best anime of 2012 project and for the Gdocs on the wiki editor archive.

If I forget everyone, I have y'all in my hearts. My brain is on fire right now.

Aleashaon Dec. 28, 2012 at 12:48 p.m.

Only found this site a couple of months ago and i have to say it one of the most respectable anime sites on the net I've seen (and trust me I've been on loads). Good content, Good Community, Good Staff and good presentation - couldn't really ask for more in a website promoting Japanese Anime / Manga for the better. Glad to be a part of it Kudos to all contributors / staff alike!

Elfenlied1012on Dec. 28, 2012 at 3:09 p.m.

@takashichea: Thanks man it's yours and everyone's support that's kept me reviewing and making podcasts. You man are easily my favorite user, no one puts in as much effort with little reward as you.

Hmm, writing for a new cartoon in '13? Can't wait to hear what is!

I've had a lot of fun yammering in these comment sections for the past year.

I am eagerly anticipating 2013 on this site its going to be fun. Anime Vice 4ever!!XD

I joined back in the middle of the Gia and John days and after they were laid off, me and a few others thought it was the end for the site. Now we were happily proven wrong as we're headed towards 2013 with new personalities, an re-vamped article series (Quick Picks), an much bigger following and a very fun video series (ie, The Vice Pit).

I hope 2013 will be an excellent year for everyone on the site! Go Anime Vice! :D

Daniel_Newton moderator on Jan. 1, 2013 at 6:15 a.m.

Now this is a feel-good post :) It's been a good year for the site especially with it going through the Whiskey Media split and such. I think Tom, Sam and the Vice Pit guests and writers have done a great job entertaining us. The Vice Pit is the informative-yet-entertaining video content the site needed, I've managed to catch just about every episode which I don't do with many web video shows.

My only regret regarding Anime Vice this year is not doing as much mod material as I'd like. I've had a bunch of ideas floating around in my noggin' and just haven't done anything with 'em. Hopefully I'll change that this year. Oh, I'd also like to apologize to for not making good on the weekly news posts we wanted to do. I guess I just ended up putting it off. I do think we should do some kind of weekly news post, I'm just not entirely sure what form it should take. I'm sure we can figure something out!

Major props to all the wiki editors (you know who you are) on the site. Our wiki continues to grow and improve and it's all thanks to the work you guys put in, good job!

Seriously - get the Top Men to fix your profile page/username, you should have got that fixed ages ago! Send Andy McCurdy a tweet or email about it, I'm sure he can take care of it.

Happy New Year everyone! Here's to many more on *raises imaginary glass*
