Anime Rental Shop is Up on Youtube

FUNimation and The Anime Network launch video rentals on YouTube.

Yes, now you, too, can pay for the honor of watching a small selection of experimental titles from FUNimation and The Anime Network on YouTube. Well, as long as you remember to get around to watching within 7 days of officially renting-- you can see all of the anime available for rent at this time here. (Via OtakuReview.)

From FUNimation you can watch Sands of Destruction, Heroic Age, Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino, Darker than Black, and Shigurui: Death Frenzy for a mere $0.99 per episode. Interestingly, they're only charging for the dub-- if you go to each series' page, the subtitled versions are free. If you want my recommendation, check out Darker than Black if you haven't already.

The Sentai titles are all rental, and they appear to be al sub-only and are similarly priced:

I haven't watched any of these, but I was just listening to Tiffany Grant talk about Tears to Tiara this morning, so if I was going to try one out, that'd be my pick. Although I'd probably just watch it on The Anime Network, since my subscription there includes the entire series and costs less than 7 episodes on YouTube.

On the other hand, I suspect that this is really aimed at reaching an audience already on YouTube who is NOT familiar with FUNimation or The Anime Network-- less us and more that guy who trolls YouTube for random funny videos.

But, what do you think? Will you spend a few bucks to try out some series?

It's pretty strange to pay for a video on Youtube so I don't think it'll catch on. Also I'm not in to these series anyway and the ones that I'm into from Sentai I'm already planing on buying.

$0.99 is a good price I suppose. There are very few shows that I watch more than once so renting can be nice.

They really need to improve that selection if they expect people to pay them. Especially when I could easily go on FUNimation's website and watch several very good shows for nothing.

I'm far more likely to subscribe at AnimeNetwork for a month and watch a series or two through than to pay $1/episode. And at AnimeNetwork the first two episodes of a series are free. Figuring that a single season on DVD on Netflix sets me back maybe $3, subscribing to a month of AnimeNetwork to watch two or three series would be similar, especially if I am reasonably sure I am going to want to watch them through to the finish.

It seems like they are going for the iTunes price point with these UTube rentals, but while I'd certainly pay $1 for a download of a show that I really liked and was likely to watch again sometime ... and could watch when not in range of the Internet machine ... $1 to watch a stream of a half hour show once seems a bit steep.

This is a great idea, but I still would rather prefer to watch the anime that I do watch on AnimeFreak's website.

I don't see this "Anime Video Rentals" going anywhere...at least not like this.

Some of these shows are really, really dated. That's a really hard sell.
