Animax Lists Magic Kaito Anime By Conan's Aoyama

Oo, this could be fun.

Moon Phase has a link to a page on Sony's Animax TV station's site that lists an anime adaptation of Magic Kaito, a brief (3-volume) detective series by Case Closed's Gosho Aoyama, which he stopped working on when Conan rocketed to superstardom.

Of course, the listing is a little odd: it says Kaito will air in April, which is pretty soon for something unannounced, and it also has episodes on both Saturday the 17th, Sunday the 18th, and then Sunday the 25th-- so if it's happening, it might be more of a special than a regular ongoing TV series.

On the other hand, this is just a listing, so we don't know for sure that it's happening; I couldn't find any independent confirmation, so for now it's a rumor. I'm going to give it a 5/10 possibility.

Oh hey, you might want to know more about the story, eh? Well, like Conan, it features a series of crimes...but from a different perspective. Kaito Kuroba is an intelligent and somewhat egotistical 15-year-old boy; his childhood friend is the sweet but impulsive Aoko Nakamori. But! Kaibo is also secretly the son of an international criminal known as the Phantom Thief, who was murdered trying to snatch the Pandora Gem. When Kaito learns this he becomes a thief and tries to get the gem himself.

Kaito has appeared in the Conan anime a few times, and as such has his own seiyuu, no less than Kappei Yamaguchi-- Ranma, InuYasha --himself!    So if this anime happens, here's hoping it keeps that same cast list!

I've read the series in scanlation. It's pretty good. In this series we actually learn why Kaito Kid only steals gems and often returns them. I know that one of the Magic Kaito cases was animated already.

Some of the Kaito Kid chapters in Detective Conan can be rather fun, because they are often pretty hard to crack. It's hard to use deductive reasoning on a magic trick where most of the evidence is hidden, but on several occasions I've solved them.

He is never referred to as just The Phantom Thief. It's always Kid the Phantom Thief or Kaito Kid. He got the name "Kid" because Conan's father Yusaku used to chase Kuroba's father, the original Kaito Kid.. A reporter had noted "1412" down in a sloppy manner and asked Yusaku about it. He misread it as saying "KID".

This would be quite the awesome turn of events. If this is true, maybe Aoyama would even be temped to start Magic Kaito up again if enough there was enough interest.

I'm always looking forward to the Kaito Kid 'arcs' in Detective Conan. Like FoxxFireArt said, they are rather fun to try and solve. Of course, the interactions between Conan and Kaito are always fun as well =P
