Animax Asia Launches LaMB Site, Trailer

The official website for a new multinational anime project has launched and has some awesome goodies.

Those of you who've been following anime news for a good while may remember word from last fall on an Animax project called LaMB, a CG anime movie produced by Animax and directed by Ryosuke Tei. The film is being released in March and its official site with videos (not quite trailers), screensavers and desktops, and the like.

What's so exciting about this project? Well, it's a multinational deal-- the film is already set to be dubbed in Japanese, English, Hindi, Mandarin, and it's also already got a couple of online games for you to play on the site. Oh, and it's supposed to air on various Animax channels throughout Asia starting in February. They've also got some name-brand bands working on the music, like Simple Plan and The Click Five.

In other words, it's basically a global anime...assuming they manage to distribute it outside of Asia. (I've seen reports that it'll air in Canada and Australia, but I haven't been able to confirm it...no word on whether it'll see a release in the US.)

Oh yeah, would you like a plot summary?

The inhabitants of a harsh desert planet called Cerra have perfected a system of imprisonment without walls. Called “Lamination”, this system of virtual slavery ensures that those convicted of serious crimes remain productive, if not free, members of society. Prisoners are hence called LaMBs.

The system has made both jails and the death penalty unnecessary in a world where human ingenuity, creativity and labor continue to be precious commodities that cannot be replaced by robots or any form of “artificial” intelligence. This system has sparked off philosophical debate among the citizens of Cerra on whether lamination is ethical.

The 2 protagonists are Eve and Jack. Eve is an ex-weapons specialist who has accidentally taken innocent lives while trying to do good and was sentenced to years in virtual imprisonment behind the laminated suit. Jack on the other hand, is a visiting scientist from another planet who is trying to forget his dead wife and immerses himself in work. Inadvertently Jack gets pulled into the political system of lamination and a romance with Eve…
