Animate Publishing Yaoi on Kindle

If Japanese publishers start to release manga directly here, it could change a few things...

After I spotted a listing for an English-language yaoi manga available digitally on Amazon supposedly by Japanese BL publisher Libre, Yaoi Press's Yamila Abraham suggested that it might be a scam-- particularly due to the fact that the item went offline immediately thereafter, along with several other reasons that put the listing into question. I shipped an e-mail off to Libre, but haven't heard back.

Fortunately a commenter at Icarus Comics' blog spotted an updated link: Animate, the Japanese company best known for selling massive amounts of merchandise and streaming anime on their own online Animate Channel (where web anime like Hetalia Axis Powers air), is apparently selling boys love manga for the Kindle, for Libre. I double-checked the whois info for the Animate World website, and it all seems to check out.

So Delivery Cupid is back online, with three more Kindle titles to join it: Nase Yamato's Pet on Duty (formerly licensed by Broccoli Books, as with Delivery Cupid), Haruka Minami's Love a La Carte, and You Asagiri's Colden Cain, both formerly licensed by Central Park Media's Be Beautiful line.

Fascinating stuff: if Animate starts working with manga publishers to help release stuff direct from Japan, all sorts of out-of-print titles could theoretically be released. I, for one, really hope to see some of the discontinued light novels, particularly TOKYOPOP's Slayers!

That said, all of the titles currently released are ones who already had English-language editions through past licensing, so I'm not sure if we can expect to see brand-new titles being released in this fashion...but hey, we can hope. (On the other hand, if Japanese publishers were to start hiring their own translators and publish directly in the US, that could change...well, it'd change a lot.)

Are there any out-of-print/license-expired manga or light novels you'd really like to see come available?

I'm not jumping on the Kindle bandwagon and that thing costs more than my bills combined.  I don't mean to sound pessimistic but I still prefer to purchase books yet with Kindle, purchasing books is beginning to sound old fashioned - I don't care.  Anyone who wants to purchase out of print books may go to Ebay.  There are several vendors who sell out of print mangas at reasonable prices and shipping.  I have purchase several out of print manga without splurging.

As soon I saw this article, I left a comment (yet to be authorized) on Yaoi Press' blog to add a few background notes about the English translation, layout & logo design rights.

I would love me a kindle but i refuse to pay the ridiculous price tag on them right now. When they drop to the $50-$100 or lower range i will be the first in line to buy one. Until then however, I'm just gonna stick to killing trees thank you very much.

EDIT: As for old series coming back, i would love to see an Ultimate Muscle re-release. That series is like my White Whale. I saw it a few times when i was younger and now it's impossible to find anywhere. It drives me nuts to not be able to find any version of it anywhere.

Well as a person who does own a kindle I only have one thing to say.  Yayoi?  Really?  Freaking Yayoi?  Of all the manga we could have went with it had to be this crap.  The kindle is an ideal device to sell manga on but in all honesty this is not the kind of thing the average kindle owner will buy.  Maybe there is a screaming fangirl out there who owns one though, it does have plenty of crappy vampire novels thats for sure....
