AH! MY GODDESS #1 - - Special Review

Makes a lot of tropes look even worse, I reckon.

You’ve got to figure that behind every tired trope, there’s an original title that still feels fresh and real, even after dozens of imitators have absolutely worn out its premises.

Maybe AH! MY GODDESS wasn’t the first anime centered on a sexy, mysterious, magical woman suddenly dropping down into the life of mousy, put-upon normal guy and turning his world upside down. I realize my knowledge of the genre isn’t thorough enough for me to be certain about that. However, I do know that it’s an older franchise that still carries around a fair amount of notoriety, so I’m willing to bet that the throng of latter shows I’ve sat through are all likely all paying some kind of homage to it.

Why go on such a preamble? Because the aforementioned trope really does bore me and, despite that, I still enjoyed this pilot a lot. It actually takes time to flesh out the “put-upon normal guy” so he feels like an actual character instead of archetype who’s just expected to be there to facilitate the scenarios you’ve come to expect from a show like this. While I wouldn’t call his shenanigans with the auto-club “realistic,” they are well-realized enough to carry enough… verisimilitude that his plight might actually, y'know, remind you of something you, yourself, have gone through.

Granted, the price of that extended stretch of grounding is that you kind-of forget that this is supposed to be a fantasy show, after a while, and the reintroduction of the fantasy element at the end feels a little jarring. Then again, that’s probably the precise intention here.

Coming into this without any preconceptions, I can confidently play the “they just don’t make ‘em like they used to” card again and say that it was so refreshing to watch an opener that takes care to mind its fundamentals and avoid the usual clichés (or, at least, make them work).

A question to the more season fans - - does the show continue to be like this? Or does it eventually fall into the nonsense I’m poo-poing, anyway?

Watch this episode, “Ah! You're a Goddess!" here and decide for yourself.

hmmm from what I remember this one delves into the nonsense pretty quickly especially after the goddesss younger sister shows up...but then it was the first to do a lot of the nonsense...

O.M.G. is pretty harmless entertainment however..... it is pure fluff, shallow cotton candy, sweet but lacking any real substance, not to sound to highbrow or anything but my anime standards are just too high to have stuck with it for more than a few episodes,

on a side note I am currently watching Black Lagoon and it fucking Rocks!

@Kino88: thats about perfect discription for this show.Shows like this if your in the mood for them are fine.

Shows like Black Lagoon i wish we had more of.

There are numerous silly moments but I do love this series. Overall Ah! My Goddess is a feel-good, slow-moving romantic comedy. Just thinking about it, the show doesn't feed on tropes and gags and all the other tidbits found in newer comedies. This one is, in a way, pure. The first season is fun but the second season is a trial to get through as Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship goes nowhere further than where the first season ends up.

@Kino88: @Marshal Victory:

Yes, Black Lagoon is amazing. So is the manga. As for shows like it, the closest is Jormungand but it does not have the brutality (among other things) happily brought to us by the Lagoon Company. Too bad Dogs: Bullets & Carnage only has a few OVAs and not a series; it would be something to fill the void until more Black Lagoon comes along (whenever that shall be).

I remember watching this. Wasn't really a fan of Belldandy and Keiichi due to how bland their characters were as I cared more for Skuld and Urd. It's gotta be pretty bad if you care more for the supporting cast of a series than the main characters.

@sotyfan16: Yeah im a fan of Jormungand as well .Good stuff threw an threw. But AH! MY GODDESS does suffer in a way because so many have tried to ape it.From what i sen it was ok an the 1st episode had some intresting animation angles that you would see more of in action than romantic comedy.

Dig Deeper into Ah! My Goddess

A boy misdials a takeout order and instead acquires a goddess. Thinking it's a joke, he makes his one wish: for the goddess to be his girlfriend. The wish is accepted, and Keiichi must figure out how to live with his pure goddess girlfriend, Belldandy...and her family.
