The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced earlier today that Afro Samurai: Resurrection has been nominated for an Emmy in the “Outstanding Animated Program (for programming one hour or more).” Surprisingly, it is only competing against another program, which is Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, “Destination Imagination.” It’s almost as if the Emmy itself is like the “Number One headband”, with only two people fighting for it.
So I would say there is a good chance of this movie actually winning. I’m not sure if it deserves to win, being just a giant Afro Samurai episode with enough breasts and blood to shake a cat at, but if it’s anime it gets my approval. The Primetime Emmy Awards will air on September 20, so check it out.
This series takes place in a post-apocalyptic Japan and follows the silent, stoic samurai, "Afro," and his garrulous companion, "Ninja Ninja," as he seeks out the fabled Number 1 warrior in all the world for revenge for his father's death.
It's just like live-action anime! Tom and Sam are joined again by Tokusatsu expert Joe Locastro for an extensive chat about the long and colorful history of SUPER SENTAI (known more often in America as POWER RANGERS).
