ADV Shifts Assets, Shuts Down

ADV sent out an interesting press release today, announcing that AEsir Holdings, LLC has snatched up an interest in "selected" programming from ADV's library, that SXION 23, LLC will be doing account servicing and distribution for AEsir, that Valkyrie Media Partners, LLC has aquired Anime Network, Inc. in its entirety, and that Seraphim Studios, LLC has snatched up Amusement Park Media, ADV's production studio.

I did a bit of research and found that three of the companies-- Seraphim Studios, Valkyrie Media Partners, and Sxion 23 --are all registered to the same name. The fourth, AEsir Holdings, is registered to Net Master Hosting. According to ANN, who talked to ADV's Chris Oarr, several former ADV employees are already working at these new companies, so you can presumably expect the releases from these companies to be of the same calibre as ADV's own releases.

The release offered that "further announcements are expected" from each of these companies "over the coming days," so I'm sure we'll hear more about what they're up to soon!

ADV was awesome.  One of my favourite ADV releases was Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.  They had this great thing on the DVDs that effectively worked just like MTV's pop-up videos.  Since much of the humour in that show referenced Japanese pop culture, the pop-ups were very informative and great to watch.

I've never had a problem with their voice-overs or translations either.  As a contrary example:  Viz's release of Death note has a serious problem in that japanese Kanji or hiragana, etc., that appears on screen isn't translated with subtitles unless you're watching the anime in Japanese, with English subtitles.  So if you're watching the English dub, obviously without English subtitles, then it doesn't ranslate what is being written in, for example, the Deathnote.  It's not a small problem for Death Note, since the very premise of the series involves the written word!  ADV wouldn't have let this happen.

Anyways, it's too bad ADV is gone.  i didn't even mention Neon Genesis Evangelion, which ADV brought to the West, which introduced many to anime I'm sure.

Aint that some shit. Im glad its gone. It was over the hill and diversified too late. No major loss, the CEO's were fucking slobs of men. And who the fucking hell has three companies under one name? Sound like another Madoff to me.

This is sad. :(

@Void_Wizard: Why? I wouldn't deal with fat joe six packs that have no business sense anyway.

so much misinformation about this news piece. i guess i can't blame them when a lot of the reporting of this news piece is either flat out wrong, highly misleading, or honest but short on details so they can't say very much (like this one). Blame it on the cryptic PR!

Sad.

@omo: Feel free to correct here in the comments. You're right if you're pointing out that the PR doesn't mention a "shut-down"-- I assumed ANN picked it up from Chris Oarr, and reported it as such. I'm trying to get in touch with ADV now to confirm since there's been such a buzz about it, but none of the numbers I have handy work for it and my Gmail is down so I can't check to see if I have anything more current.  :\

Is it shutting down when everything's still running out of the same office, with the same people? I'm fairly sure they're only shuttering the ADV name because they can't do business under it any longer (for whatever reason, either debt or reputation with licensors). And since no one seemed to question it when they did it last year for Sentai and Switchblade, why not make up more 'partners'? I doubt anyone even had to move their desk in the Bintliff office. Congrats to gia for being the only one to actually do some research on this story but I'm sure there's a lot more we don't know about.

The way things are worded, it's just more of shifting things to a Sentai Films style operation- make up new names, and make each division seperate, probably to make it easier to manage things business-wise. It's not surprising, and it's in no way bankruptcy or a shutdown...

I think Robert at RACS has a good explanation. Check it out

@NovidAnon: What the heck are you talking about: "And who the fucking hell has three companies under one name? Sound like another Madoff to me."? Most major companies (And small ones) have multiple companies under one name that pays the bills. Disney has

Dimension Films, Disney pictures, Disney Home Video, Disney stores... Sony has Sony Records, Sony Pictures, Sony Electronics, they used to have Columbia, Universal  and Trystar.... Warner Brothers has Warner Brothers Records, Warner Brothers pictures, AOL, and ul;most every rap label out there, GE has NBC- GM has Chevolet, Pontiac, Cadilac, and had Hummer, ... Toyota Moters has Toyota, Scion, and Infinity, and Bandai has... Crap- Bandai anything under the sun! companies Split themselves into divisions to keep company themes, book keeping, and marketing to the public straight- ever heard of  "Mother Company?" Well kid it's very rare that you will purchase something or deal with any company that doesn't have one. Even ADV had multiple companies: Newtype, Anime Network, ADV films...
