ACCEL WORLD #1 -- Watch & Learn

Piggies make a virtual reality dystopia so much cuter.

Seriously - - I’ve run into enough “user friendly” cyberpunk series set in colorful virtual worlds lately, I feel like they should all be grouped under some identified-and-categorized genre label. Between this, .HACK/QUANTUM, CHAOS HEAD and SUMMER WARS (just off the top of the my head,) it’s clear we’ve got something of a movement going on, right now - - albeit one that admittedly repackages a 20-30 year old literary movement into something cuter. If classifications can get specific enough to make “harem” part of the trade speak, than there’s no reason that “I-Dystopia” can’t be coined.

I feel that term’s appropriate (even though none of these story’s have been especially grim) because I honestly dread the birthday of the wretched, unavoidable spawn that social networking sites and MMO’s are inevitably going to conceive. You know it’s coming. It’s going to grossly turn every conceivable facet of your life into something that can be parlayed into online self-promotion or marketing…

…and damn if ACCEL WORLD doesn’t present that horrible vision of the future in a fun fashion with appealing characters and slick animation.

Most of the times I review I-Dystopia titles, I say I found it entertaining despite my initially-profound disinterest in the premise - - and this is no exception. I fell right into the studio’s trap and sympathized with Piggy (my name for the main character) almost immediately. I found the whole concept of an accelerated pocket of time to be an intriguing one, and I enjoyed how it was introduced by taking something of an Aikido approach to a bullying predicament. Countless, helplessly-nerdy kids have vied for our empathy on screen - - none have seized on as crafty a solution as Piggy does here.

Once again, in spite of myself, the latter day, feel-good virtual reality intrigue has hooked my interest. I'll be back for more episodes.

Watch this episode, "Accelerate” here and decide for yourself.

Glad you picked this up. I'm also currently enjoying this series.

This is no CHAOS HEAD . Accel World is average to good .CHAOS HEAD is poor to almost average. Any one else think of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Cartman when 1st watching this even just for a moment?

Also their 1st virtual world seemed like two online games mixed together.

I'm enjoying this one as well. Especially the art for the fight scenes. And ESPECIALLY the latest episode. 5, right?

I believe this is the first fat main character in an anime I have ever saw. Kind of make this series somewhat unique. I really enjoying the fighting scene

Hmm so is this like George Orwell's 1984 then? I don't know that the combination of MMO's and social media is necessarily a dystopia or that the literary tradition is naturaly dystopian. Certainly some have been, but I didn't find cybermancer that dystopian..but then I found the world of Ghost in the Shell one I would want to live in so..

I can't help but know that this series in the end is going to disappoint. It's like a bull in a china shop, brushing and bumping into interesting things, but it feels like it's going to head into a basic shonen anime. I'm hoping to be proven wrong and that they're going to explore some of the things they've touched on in that first episode, and they've pleasantly surprised in some respects already (especially with "Piggy's" self image issues), but I don't hold out hope that the interesting premise isn't going to be fully explored.

Anyone not gonna bother mentioning how "Piggy's" character design looks like a comedic relief anime character compared to his classmates? It was one of the big things that turned me away from Accel World since it was hard for me to take the kid's problems seriously.

@Dream:

I not bother by it, that probably the reason everyone picking on him

Here's one of the things it touches on that it's not going to resolve. Does the combination of being linked into the neural net and being "accelerated" change the way that people judge others on appearance since they know there's a different "avatar" they possess. Who's looking at him and "Hime" after the first episode and waiting to see how much she's going to stab him in the back or manipulate him?

@Dream: Yeah for the entire episode I couldn't help but notice how weird he looked compared to his classmates

Guess it's time for me to check this anime out. It's the one I had my eye on before this season started actually, just ended up watching other stuff somehow. It's great to see articles on it.

DarkManaon May 13, 2012 at 9:14 a.m.

@Dream: I have to agreed that it is little hard to take this kid seriously but it is interesting that the main character is much different than other typical main character you see in this kind of anime series, it is a good anime from what I seen but I hope at least that Accel World doesn't turn out to be a disappointment later
