A New One For the Vocab List: Bushou Moe

An up and coming trend in Japan?

R25.com reports on a phrase that's becoming increasingly common amongst Japanese Internet-goers, if Google searches are any indication (380,000 on December 8, according to their article). Apparently fans have started to gather items that feature the “belligerent country's female military officer” motif and has been a growing phenomenon since 2006.

But the Bushou Moe-girls got their big break this year when a bushido moe character was created to be the mascot for the Tenchijin Suishin Project, which appears to be some kind of historical society devoted to the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573).

I'm not entirely clear on the details, but it's kind of an interesting concept-- I have this mental image of a bunch of cute little girls trying to attack big burly samurai men, and they win only because the samurai men just can't bring themselves to harm the moe girls.

I can't decide if it's a good or bad thing that that photo looks like Gackt.

I'm not entirely clear on what this Bushou Moe is. Is it just moe girls who use swords?

PureRok: more than that, they have to be both moe and belligerent.

Actually, the only character I can think of who manages to be both is Haruhi Suzumiya @_@ Although I suppose Dororo might work too...

... I don't know what to think. Though there have always been female samurai. They primarily used Naginatas.

Dig Deeper into Moe

Moe (pronounce moh-eh) is a Japanese slang term for something one likes, and within the anime realm is used to refer to characters who inspire a protective sort of love-- usually because the characters seem to need someone to take care of them.
