A New Avatar: The Last Airbender Cartoon on the Horizon?

Please be true.

Rejoice! It appears as if we might be getting some new Avatar sometime in the future, but nothing has officially been announced yet. How do we know this? Well, because Nickelodeon Animation Studio is currently looking to hire specific people for what they call a “Untitled Avatar the Last Airbender Project”. This is fantastic news, for I’m sure the hype for this franchise is going to be high thanks to the live-action film, the perfect opportunity to showcase a new show. But the question on everyone’s mind is what they will do about the story. Will it take place after the original, with all the same characters, or will it feature the next avatar in the avatar cycle? I kind of hope it is a new avatar, but I don’t think they will drop these characters anytime soon.

Avatar was a show that competed on popularity with Ben 10... they will probably do the same thing as Ben 10 did and just do a show with the same characters but older!

Probably not considering its different studios, different writers, different producers, different directors, different creators, different networks, and different audiences. That combined with a movie coming out I'm going to assume some short specials or maybe more of the chibi specials.

I think they tied up avatar very well so I can't see them continuing the story, but they'll do anything I guess.

I would like to see a next generation avatar... maybe a modern day Avatar?

I would love to see a new Avatar series, not really sure what they do with it. but, here's hoping it's great.

Awesome. Are they going to make a Book 4, or something entirely new? Either way, can't wait to see it.

This is probably the best news I've heard about Last Airbender-anything. And if it's because of the movie, well, I'll take it. I can see them wanting to do a "one-shot" TV movie.

With the story from the first Avatar series wrapped up fairly well, I don't see a direct sequel - but they've built the world and established the mythology -- the best bet would be to set a new series in the 'future' or 'past' and tell a whole new story, with a new avatar.   But studios/networks don't often make decisions on what would make the best story... honestly, I have no idea where they're taking it.

Looking forward to it anyway

The only loose end is Azula in her Crazy ass bitch mode....
If she attacked the White Lotus and they were guarding X secret we didnt knew and she gets it to become the new big bad, but make the characters a little older....

It could work....

The two creators said in interviews that Aang's story is over but they did say in the DVD commentaries for season three that they do intend to make a spin-off focusing on the more minor characters in the Avatar Story line.  That could very well be what this is, atleast I hope.

I would prefer Avatar: The Next Generation or a show that detailed all the build up to how the world got to how it was at the start of the original series. Perhaps take it form a point of view of some one on the bad side, but see what they are doing as a good thing until the very end, when he/she realizes what they have done and need to fix it. Perhaps they could show this character(s) doing things in the background of the first series to get certain people into certain places to help the original cast. Although if they did do this the show would inevitable need to end on a sad note, and in this day and age for a major company to make any kind of entertainment that doesn't end all happy happy joy joy would almost be unheard of.

As much as I like the original cast, I don't want to risk having the way I feel about them possibly being ruined in a spin off series.

Avatar would be an easy series to continue, of course it shouldn't be called "The Last Airbender" anymore. Unless they decide to continue Aang's story into adulthood.

I only watched maybe the first three episodes of the original series. I could never catch it on TV, and I didn't want to use pirated versions on certain other websites. It just eventually fell by the wayside for me and I moved on to watching other things.

While I'm a huge Avatar: The Last Airbender fan I will admit I don't believe the series gets really good in till about a quarter into the second season which might turn some people off from watching the rest of it and missing out on it.  Kinda like some animes I know of.

This renews my faith in humanity.

For all we know its about Avatar Kyoshi or something, set in the past.

A show focusing on adult characters (like Kyoshi in her Avatar days) would be awesome, but I don't see it happening.

I heard the cartoon was good, but it seemed really childish so I never got into it. Maybe it was because it was on Nickelodeon.
Naruto79on May 5, 2010 at 7:52 a.m.

There were too many plotlines that where left hanging following the original series. So when they say “project”, while that could mean a new series… it could also mean several animated movies to follow up the series. If they do that, I would be cool with them moving on to another Avatar in the cycle. Plus the fact that if Aang and Katara’s child could possible break the cycle with the next in the cycle being a Water Bender where they could go with that…

Well it could be right after the last fight, after Aang defeated Fire-lord Ozai and Zuko became the Fire-lord, Zuko visited his father in prison and told him to tell him where his mother is. So I'm thinking that the new series will be based on the group trying to locate Zuko's mother.
Newdeathon May 5, 2010 at 8:09 a.m.
A new Avatar cartoon series would be awesome. I'm curious to know if Zuko's mother is still alive and Azula's current mental state has been bugging me since the series ended.

A lot of adults ended up getting into it, but it's still at heart a kids show. One of the thing that sets it apart from other kids shows, I think, is that the more childish elements are done in a way that tends to be more charming than obnoxious, something they improve on as the show progresses.

Dig Deeper into Avatar: The Last Airbender

In a world where gifted individuals can bend elemental forces to their will, the Fire Nation declares war against the Earth, Air, and Water tribes. Only Aang, a young boy who wields the power of each element, can stop the war and save the world.
