89% of US Anime Industry is Character Goods

Americans spend more on goodies than on DVDs. Interesting.

According to JETRO and anime!anime!, anyway. In 2003 the Japan Export Trade Organization, JETRO, announced that the US anime industry was worth about $4.8 billion USD-- a pretty significant number. JETRO just announced its estimate for 2007, however, and found that the industry had dropped down to only $2.8 billion. But we all knew the anime industry had been dropping in size; the more interesting piece of information is that $2.5 billion of that-- nearly 90% --was spent on character goods like the unique Bleach keychains pictured right.

I haven't been able to find a 2003 number for character good sales to give a rough estimate of how now compares to then, and I'm willing to be the amount spent on character goods was pretty significant back then, too-- but 89%? Yowza.

This does explain some of B andai Entertainment's moves, such as putting so much effort into higher-priced, goodie-packed premium editions for hit series like Haruhi-- though on the other hand, it doesn't seem to have worked for Lucky Star, whose 6 volume wasn't released in the premium version. Bandai has also devoted a lot of its booth space at conventions in the last year or two to goodies as well as DVDs.

What do you guys think? Do you spend more on character goods than on DVDs? (I definitely know I have at some points in my life...)

That's a really high percentage... I must see how they retrieved that kind of information. I want to know their p-value, r, and all that hunky dorey statistic stuff.

I'm not much of a DVD buyer because I'm more of a manga buyer so I do spend more on character goods than DVDs. I do waste lots of money on random trinkets I don't need like cell phone charms, keychains, and other stuff.

I have at some points but overall more money on DVDs.

Not too surprising since there is no such thing as  bit torrents  for action figures, key chains, etc.

Go to TRU and look at all the Dragon ball and Naruto toys.  That's why this is the way it is.  What we as anime fans buy is but a drop in the bucket.

DVDs are something I'll buy just about any series I like in. Figures tempt me almost all the time, and they're a lot more expensive. I may only buy them from my favorite of favorite shows, but sometimes I'd rather buy a figure than another box set of DVDs when the show is only above average. When it comes to cons in particular, I almost never buy any DVDs or manga, just models, figures, posters, art books, usually higher priced stuff that you normally can only find online...I don't bother with keychains or patches. Of the $400 average I spend on memorabilia at a convention, less than an average of $30 of it goes to DVDs and manga (I save buying those for Borders, Best Buy, and large animecornerstore runs).

Estimated at $4.8 billion USD in 2003, but only $2.8 billion in 2007.
