Ha! I knew there had to be something more to that little behind-the-scenes chestnut I heard long ago (before I even watched this show) about how the Eva’s were designed to convey “restrained force.” So they’re cloned angels who’ve been simultaneously armored and chained by the rest of the big bio-mechanoid suits, huh? If I’ve got that right, that explains all the times those things have gone crazy and started acting like they’ve got a mind of their own.

Let me stress that that if I got it right because, based on the discussions for the last post, I should clarify that these aren’t supposed to be objective summaries of Eva episodes, nor really even reviews. They’re just my impressions, as the “anime noob.” Correct or incorrect, these are the immediate thoughts I have and I think part of the fun for you, the lunatics in the Anime Vice community, is to hear what somebody peering in from the outside sees.

And I saw a LOT happen in this episode, too. It’s like the whole gamut of Shinji. First, he finally shows some spine (and to his father no less) but, of course, it figures that quitting NERV is what he finally gets passionate about. That’s kind of like finding triumph in losing, isn’t it? Then he has to come back at the last minute (and after some encouragement from Kaji, whose whole monologue about watering the melons was so hysterical.  "Of course, I'd rather be between Misato's melons." Then, Shinji fights the angel in one serious nail-biter of a climax. First, the angel smashes through the walls into NERV’s command center! HOLY CRAP! Then, Shinji smashes through the OTHER wall and gets into clinch with the monster! WHOA! It’s too bad I watched this alone, because I know for a fact that this would be great to see this with a crowd. They’d be OO-ing and AW-ing and gasping and cheering, and hissing over this latest maddening cliffhanger. Shinji’s Eva regenerates its own arm?! And it’s a human limb?!?! I definitely did NOT see that coming!!!
 
Dare I say... WHAT THE F@#$ DID I JUST WATCH?!?!

You are getting closer to some bigger revelations than the Eva's true nature.
By the way, did you watch this episode dubbed or subtitled?

This is a sick episode, the way shinji finally stands up to Gendo in the wake of the toji incident, then go's off and needs an inspirational speech by kaji to return in triumph, story telling at it's best!
 
I find it funny to how the other evas are so useless against  zeruel, this lose will definitely take its toll on Asuka's ego. The fight scene in this episode is epic, the true nature of the beast that is eva is revealed, as unit one literally takes the angel zeruel into itself.
 
we have some crazy midscew scenes coming up with shinji, as well can't wait to see the "new and improved" 01 in action again.

This is definitely my favorite episode of Eva. This one episode basically sums up pretty much the entire cast of Eva. You've got Asuka throwing everything at the Angel in an attempt to show she is better then Shinji only to lost miserably. Rei recklessly throwing away her life to protect everyone.  Misato being the only one to show up as Shinji is leaving and she is the ony one not to step back as the Angel crashes through the command room. 
 
Kaji joking about Misato's melons as the world is about to end. Kensuke's best friend almost dies, he other friend is leaving, and all he does is complain about not being able to pilot an Eva. You've got Gendo being Gendo chasing his son out of the town but waiting for him to return. Then you got Shinji running away from his problems literally but then finally faces them head on only to find his effort was useless when Eva's battery runs out. Then you've got Eva Unit 01 being the best character in the series rejecting Nerv even if it means the end of the world then proceeding to kick ass in the most awesome way possible. I might have forgot some but it was definitely one of the best episodes.

@FoxxFireArt:  Yeah, you know a lot of times people associate a darker take with being a better one, but I don't think it's always the case. I think there's still plenty of fall out regarding Toji that will be explored.
