@ReVolutionOfEvangelion:

 Nice post, Revolution, but I think you've got Instrumentality completely wrong.

As far as we can tell, Instrumentality's exactly what it says on the tin: Everybody's barriers are removed, and now their souls are one. It's not really 6 billion people watching TV so much as 6 billion people sharing a psychic link, their thoughts and feelings flowing freely and without reserve or fear.

As for the "How disgusting" remark, you'll notice that she says it right after touching Shinji lovingly on the cheek. This brings us to the "hedgehog's dilemma" from earlier in the series. Shinji and Asuka have chosen to face life, but what that means is that they now have to FACE LIFE. They've shut themselves out of Instrumentality, and so they're left with alienation and the fear of getting hurt, back where they began, but stronger and probably wiser.

...but...I did say that.  Instrumentality is "all minds are linked and the barriers are removed"; I'm confused what you're reacting to, I fully agree that Instrumentality is what you describe it as (this thread is getting very long; how did I describe it before that you are reacting against? sorry if I used a clipped version)

As for "how disgusting", yes thats it on another level to:  how disgusting it feels to finally be emotionally connecting with someone else; how awkward/painful if feels to be making an emotional connection.

You don't understand; even I talk about Third Impact and Instrumentality interchangeably (strictly speaking, Third Impact is what causes Instrumentality)

The point regarding your post is that the First Ancestral Race, who seeded planets with life (some Angel, some human) ...*never intended* for humans and Angels to exist together, for fear that they would start Instrumentality.

" Personally I always despised Evangelion because of the hypocrisy involved.  Anno pretty much scoffs at the plot points of Super Robots, then proceeds to blow up Antartica then claims humanity simply rebuilds itself after 10 years with the only problem being that old tokyo is now underwater.  Compare the size of Antartica to the Chicxulub Crater which is 110 miles wide and caused the mass extinction at the end of the Mesozoic Era.   He then critcizes people for being hikkormori when his having a mental breakdown, and then immediatly after he begans to approve the stupidest products known to man just to sell garbage to the people he just criticized, and then proceeds to make things worse.  "

....Antarctica doesn't "blow up" - as in the whole continent.  Adam, the First Angel, who was buried under Mount Markham in Antarctica, blew up.   The explosion melted the polar caps and even altered the axial tilt a bit.

As for approving all the merchandise...well, at the time, Gainax was bankrupt, so I can see why they did.  Eventually then monster grew beyond their control, though.

@OnlyWonderBoy:  I started off doing this for just pilot episodes online. That got to be a little too scatter shot for me, so I watched all of FLCL as a test. It went over pretty well, so I watch EVA after that. The next show I'm watching is DEATH NOTE.

@Gaff:  All these people congratulating me... it feels like the end of the last episode of the show.

I can only imagine how mind-bending EOE must be after clubbing.

@Burntlettuce:  You know,  a lot of people are recommending GUNBUSTER to me. I'll check it out when I get the chance.

Even if Mankind did survive such a disaster than it sure as hell wouldn't rebuild itself in about 10 years, especially Japan where major cities are all on the water.

@ReVolutionOfEvangelion: You don't understand. Please stop assuming I do not know what Third Impact is and how it leads to Instrumentality. I know Instrumentality was something that the FAR didn't want to happen but planned for as an eventuality. I don't need you explaining it to me as if I haven't been an Evangelion fan for years who knows the difference between off base theories and the accepted ones.

I'm late to the party, but I just finished watching the series + end, and I pretty much agree with this article!
