Alternate Reality

An alternate reality is a universe that is different from the main world of a series. This world can be different in just small ways and it will still resemble the main reality, or it can be completely different and not be similar at all to the universe the protagonist had known.

Angels (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Beings created by Adam from the white moon during the second impact. It is said that if they ever have contact with Adam or Lilith it will cause the Third Impact.

AT Field

Nearly impenetrable barrier generated by the Angels and Evangelions.

Bad Ass Fight Scene

A fight scene or epic battle that stands above the norm of what the series offers and goes down in history as one of the best combat encounters in the series. The perfect combination of epicness and animation.

Basketball

A sport where teams of five attempt to sink an orange ball into a hoop. It is a western sport in origin but is popular in Anime as well.

Bath Scene

One of the most common forms of fanservice in all anime. Bath scenes can show bonding between characters, but are more often used as just an excuse to exploit a female character.

Big Boobs

What is anime without the over-sexualization of women's breasts?

Clone

A Clone is a biological copy of any organic creature. A Clone is mostly created through science and is sometimes abused to an extent.

Comedy

Nearly every anime has a comedic moment here or there. Everyone likes to laugh.

Convenient Censorship

Convenient Censorship such as steam, hair and beams of light are often used in anime and manga to show naked characters while obscuring their "naughty bits".

Cooking

Someone or something to do with cooking.

Delinquents

One who disobeys or breaks rules or laws, often used to describe younger individuals such as high schoolers who cause trouble.

Drama

Drama is a concept used in story telling to invoke an emotional reaction from the audience by using serious themes; such as tragedy, suspense, and death.

Dreams and Nightmares

The imaginary events that goes on in your head when you are asleep. In some anime's they can bring important messages or to haunt a person.

Drunk

Someone who loves to consume alcohol, and typically overdoes it.

Eating

Perhaps the greatest past-time in Anime, eating is often done in more lighthearted moments as a source of humor or as a way of showing togetherness with characters, usually involving characters who can eat insane amounts of food and not gain an ounce.

Energy Blast

A character can harness their power and shoot energy-based projectiles from their body.

Episode Recap

Basically a short summary of past events told in one episode.

Espionage

This is the act of secretly watching a person or group to gather information, often for political purposes. Spies typically disguise themselves so that they might sneak around. Espionage is also frequently tied to assassination plots.

EVA

The humanoid mechs that combat the Angels and keep them from getting to lilith so they dont use her to destory mankind

Exaggerated Emotional Iconography

Common visual conventions seen in manga and anime to convey emotions, often for comical effect.

Fan Service

Fan Service is often a sexually provocative moment or pose that takes place in manga and anime. It usually has no real purpose to a story, and serves as a lurid visual.

Father

Fatherhood as a concept. A man who has conceived or raised a child.

Flashback

Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback.

Friendship

Harem

The term "harem" is frequently used to describe manga and anime series that feature one man surrounded by a variety of female romantic candidates. Prototypical harems: Tenchi Muyo!, Love Hina.

Heroic Sacrifice

An act when someone gives up something of great importance for a greater good.

The gathering of all Lilin’s souls into Lilith’s egg, which results in the creation of a single perfect being.

Japanese Honorifics

Japanese Honorifics are best described as a sign or respect and endearment. Politeness is an important part of Japanese culture and language.

Japanese Writing

Japanese Writing is the writing system of the Japanese language in the form of syllabaries. It consists of Kanji, hiragana, katakana, and romaji.

Kissing

Kissing is the act of pressing your lips to the body of another person. This can be on the cheeks, head, hand, but more commonly to another person's lips.

Kuudere

A character, often cold and harsh on the outside; but swirling with feelings inside. Much like an igloo, they keep an ice-cold wall, in an ice-cold world; just to protect the warmth inside.

Lecher

Characters who exercise their strong libidinous desires in unwholesome ways, such as peeping on the objects of their desire, making inappropriate comments, stealing underwear etc. Though typically middle-aged or elderly men with a penchant for young girls, there are probably a few dirty old women out there.

Martial Arts

Seen in just about every form of anime at least at one point. The key component that makes Shounen popular among boys. As well as Ancient art in itself

Masochist

A Masochist is a type of person who attains gratification out of physical or emotional pain. Abuse/Humiliation.

Mech

Generally refers to a large, usually humanoid weapon-type robot, usually piloted from within.

Military

The force of defense and offense of a nation. Are mostly equiped with the best weapons that the nation can provide.

Mind Rape

The idea of attacking someone mentally and emotionally.

Mother

A woman who has given birth to or raised a child.

Murder

The act of taking another person's life.

NERV

NERV is an organization under command of the UN to defeat the Angels and prevent the Third Impact. They created the Evangelions.

No Mercy

When a character doesn't even hesitate to take care of an opponent and shows them no restraint or sympathy at all. Usually a trait in villains but even heroes can prove to be cold blooded when they need to be.

Otaku

In Japanese, otaku means people who are obsessed over something. Usually, it is in reference to anime, manga, and video games. In the western world, the word is frequently designated to a fan of anime, manga, video games and/or Japanese culture.

Parents

Someone or something that both has and raises children/offspring.

Partners

A group of at least two people who always work together and often make each other stronger by doing so.

Personal Hell Traincar

A train wagon that symbolizes a character’s personal hell

Pet

Something that serves as a pet or behaves in the manner of one.

Pet Owner

Someone who has a pet for a reason. Said owner may either treat the pet like royalty or like dirt. It is not too common for at least one anime/manga character to own a pet or two in a series, even though said pet might possess special powers.
