Neliel Tu Oderschvank was the former 3rd Espada. After she was ambushed and attacked, her Hollow Mask was damaged and she was changed into a childish Hollow with no memories.
Neliel Tu Oderschvank (Nel Tu) is the former 3rd Espada under Sosuke Aizen. She held this position for many years and was constantly challenged for her role by Nnoitra Gilga to prove that men were more powerful than women. The Espada were given the task of finding the "Vasto Lorde" and she was disgusted by Nnoitra wanton slaughter of other colonies of Hollows in their search. She would tell him to remember that they were once Arrancar as well before they were graced with such evolution. Still, she saved him from being killed by another Hollow, but not out of any fondness. Only to keep the Espada from losing a member. When Nnoitra asked why she was always following him if she hated him so much, she answered that it was because he was weaker than her.
Nnoitra would continue to challenge her, but she refused to draw her blade against the likes of him. He would not draw her into him pointless and demented world. She didn't understand his blood lust and violent philosophy since it was all based around a temporary high. He agreed, but it was the only thing that filled his void. Over and over he tried to kill Neliel but she defeated him with very little effort. She told him that they were all once humans that were changed to beasts, but granted reason and consciousness as Arrancar. Rational people need a reason to battle and she told him that he had none. Nnoitra shouted back that his reason to fighter was because he hated her and that a woman could surpass a man in battle. She left him, refusing to see him as a warrior.
Some time later, Neliel was ambushed by Nnoitra who had teamed up with Szayel Aporro Grantz in a sneak attack. They had taken her Fracción members, Pesche Guatiche and Bilstin Dondochakka, and forcibly removed their Hollow masks. Nnoitra took his opening and attacked her from behind. He damaged her own Hollow mask and knocked her unconscious. He took her prone body by the neck and tossed her off the ledges of the Las Noches, along with her Fracción. He planned to surpass her strength by the time she could return and finally defeat her in a battle. The wound to her mask had caused her reiatsu had leaked from her body and changed into a child.
Dondochakka and Pesche woke to find their leader had changed into a child and had no memory of her life before. To protect her, they took her into hiding deep in the deserts of Hueco Mundo and pretended to be her older brothers. They knew how much she hated fighting and would be spared from that life the way she is now. They lived like this for some time before they ran into Ichigo Kurosaki who had invaded Hueco Mundo looking for his friend Orihime Inoue.
Neliel is a supporting character from the anime/manga series BLEACH, created by Tite Kubo. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in August 2001. She first appeared to be a simple minded child Arrancar with little power, but is later revealed to be a member of the Espada.
She first appeared in her child form in BLEACH Volume 28, CH. 245 "The Way Without Enemies", and her first anime appearance was in BLEACH - Episode 145 "The Espada Gather! Aizen's Royal Assembly". Nel's adult form is later revealed in BLEACH Volume 33 CH. 290 "The Broken Mask", and the adult form's first anime appearance was in BLEACH - Episode 192 "Nel's Secret, A Busty Beauty Joins the Battle!?". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Tomoko Kaneda, and the U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is done by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. Despite the drastic change in forms, she keeps the same voice actress.
After Neliel's adult form was revealed in Volume 33, she was illustrated on the cover of BLEACH Volume 34. Neliel's full name is more commonly shortened to "Nel Tu". For the English dub of BLEACH, Nelliel's child form doesn't speak with a lisp. Though, she does occasionally call Ichigo "Itsygo".
" There was a time when we ceased to be Human and became beasts. And then in becoming Arrancar, we regained our capacity for reason. One who possesses reason should require a reason to fight. "
Neliel Tu Oderschvank - BLEACH Vol. 33 Ch. 294
Nel Tu's first appearance was that of a small child Hollow. Even her Hollow mask was a damaged, cartoonish skull. She has large incisors and a horizontal crimson-line that runs across her face, under her eyes. She also has a large scar between her eyes. Unlike any other Hollow that has been introduced in the story, her personality was very innocent. She was afraid of Ichigo, believing that Shinigami were evil. She has a childish style of speech and talks with a lisp. Eventually, she begins to bond with Ichigo after she forces him to play several games of tag and rides on his back as he heads for the Hueco Mundo castle of Las Noches.
Birthday: 24 April
Height: 176cm (5'9") (adult form)
Weight: 63kg (139lbs.) (adult form)
It was during Ichigo's fight with Nnoitra that Nel's true adult form is finally revealed. She has a voluptuous body, her hair grows longer, and her Hollow masks also changes to a more graphic form with curved-horns. Nel watches as Ichigo protects her from Nnoitra. When Nnoitra is about to finish Ichigo off, her emotions for Ichigo cause her to transform back into her adult form and Ichigo notices the number 3 mark on her back. She tells him that she wants to protect him. Some of her memories are returned, and in a fight she speaks very little. Though grown, she retained much of her childish affection to Ichigo. She suddenly changed back to her child form during the battle just as she spared Nnoitra.
In the flashback of her life before being changed into a child, Nel was revealed to be a very calm and gallant warrior. She reads books in her spare time, and refuses to fight opponents she belies are weaker or injured to the point they can not longer fight. This is a trait she shares with Kenpachi Zaraki. Nel was a warrior that had a diligent ethic toward any leader she sees as worthy, and her compassion and near pacifistic views are among some of her traits that separates her from any of the Arrancar that Ichigo has met before.
Nel Tu was running along Hueco Mundo with Dondochakka and Pesche playing chase, when her friends were attacked by three people she originally mistook for odd looking Hollows. They were Ichigo Kurosaki, Uryuu Ishida, and Sado Yasutora, and had come to save their friend Orihime Inoue. They carried the three humans to Las Noches and only later realized they were humans, one with Soul Reaper powers. She was torn about telling them how to beat the sand guardian, Runuganga, that was threatening them all, but it was defeated by two more Soul Reapers, Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai. Ichigo tried to get Nel and the others to stay behind so they wouldn't get hurt, but she guilt tripped him into taking them along. Deeper in they all had to separate, but she still followed Ichigo. Only later did she realize that Dondochakka and Pesche didn't follow. Nel watched as Ichigo fought the demoted Espada, Dordonii Alessandro Del Socacchio. She stayed out of the way mostly until she saved Ichigo from a powerful Cero attack, she absorbed it, and blast it back with more power. Outraged by Dordonii's relentless attacks at Nel to goad him, Ichigo defeats him by using Hollowfication. She uses her healing saliva to heal Dordonii on Ichigo's request.
Further into Las Noches, Nel watches Ichigo battle Ulquiorra Cifer, and again he risks his own life to defend her. Ichigo is defeated when Ulquiorra pierces him through his chest. As Nel cried over Ichigo's dead body, the Espada Grimmjow arrived with Orihime to heal Ichigo. Using her powers, she was able to close the wound and his life returned. As Ichigo and Grimmjow fought, Nel scolded Orihime for acting afraid of Ichigo's Hollowfied form and not cheering for him. This in spite of her saying how gentle he is and was trying to protect them. Once Ichigo won, he carried them both down from the pillars and to the ground. This time Nel scolded Ichigo for hiving the wrong response to Orihime thinking she's heavy. Almost immediately, they were attacked by Nnoitra Jiruga, the one who put her in this child state, and his Fraccion, Tesla Lindocruz.
Nnoitra revealed Nel's identity as a former Espada, but she denied it since she had no memories of her past. Still Ichigo defended her from attack. Nnoitra proudly admits to being the one who stole her power, Ichigo tried to slash him across his chest, but the blade did no damage. Seeing Ichigo in impeding danger causes Nel to transform back to her original state just in time to save him. He sees the 3 mark on her back, and she tells him it will be over quickly. Her Sonído speed is too great for Nnoitra to keep up with, and he forgets about Nelliel's ability when he retaliates with a Cero. She sucks in the attack and just fires back her Cero Doble attack.
Nelliel refuses to fall for Nnoitra's taunts, and starts to release her Zanpakuto. He's too late to stop her and blown away by the release of the Spiritual Pressure. She throws her spear at him with her Lanzador Verde attack that hits and blows him away. Just as she approaches him to win the fight, she suddenly reverts back to her child form. After kicking her around and laughing, she forces Nel to watch as Tesra brutalizes Ichigo. They were then saved by the appearance of the Soul Reaper Kenpachi Zaraki. As Kenpachi and kills Nnoitra, Orihime uses her powers to heal Nel. Coyote Stark then arrived to abduct Orihime again, and Ichigo left after her.
Several months after Aizen was defeated by Ichigo. Nel, still in her child form, rushed to the Human World to find Ichigo because Hueco Mundo had been overrun by a powerful unknown force.
As a former high ranking member of the Espada, Nel has an immense Spiritual Pressure (reaitsu) and strength. With a single hand she can stop and opponents Cero attack with ease. Some of her strengths do vary depending on which form she is currently in. Her adult form being the obviously stronger one. Still, some of her adult abilities do remain in the child form and it also has a few unique ones, as well. As with most character in the BLEACH series, Nel also possesses extraordinary skill with her own zanpakuto.
Neliel's zanpakuto is named Gamuza (羚騎士/ガミューサ, gamyuusa). It has a green sheath and the tsuba is in the form of two crescent moons. The blade is in the shape of a basic katana. Similar to the Shinigami's Bankai, the Espada and other Arrancar have what is called a Resurrección (帰刃 (レスレクシオン). They are released by a verbal command of the Arrancar. Neliel's command is Declare (謳え, utae) The extent of Gamuza's abilities have yet to be revealed. She has not used the Gamuza in an extended battle outside of releasing it to fight with Nnoitra. The released form of a Arrancar's zanpakuto reveals partially what their original Hollow form was before they were transformed into an Arrancar. Neliel's release transforms her into a centaur, and she has shoulder armor.
Neliel's release command is "Declare... Gamuza". Gamuza means "Chamois" in Spanish. The kanji means "Antelope Knight". The released form of Gamuza transforms into a long metal lance. With the release of her zanpakuto comes increases in all her natural abilities of Reiyoku, strength, and speed.
In the original anime that aired in Japan of Tite Kubo's BLEACH series, alterations were added to Neliel's design. Her clothes, in her adult form, were slightly altered from the original manga version. Her top was extended to fully cover her breasts, and the size of her breasts were slightly reduced. The manga version reveals the lower portion of her breasts. A similar alteration was made in the same episode. When her 3rd rank Espada mark was revealed on her back, the manga version clearly showed her breast from the back. This was also removed in the anime scene.
In the anime, Nel's Gamuza zanpakuto is colored as having a white-crescent moon guard, but on the cover of Volume 34 it's painted as a dark brown.
Nel has her own character album that is part of the third season of the BLEACH Beat Collection published by Sony Music. In these collections, the voice actors of the character performs songs and skits. Songs that were included on the Session 5 edition that were performed by Tomoko Kaneda(Nel Tu) include "Kokoro Oasis" and "Every Fight!".
Being a relatively new character to the BLEACH series, Nel has not appeared in as many games as some of her fellow cast of characters. Her first game appearance was in the Sony PSP game BLEACH: Heat of the Soul 4(2007) in her child form only. Her adult form later debuted in BLEACH: Heat of the Soul 5(2008) on the PSP, and on BLEACH: Versus Crusade(2008) on the Nintendo Wii. Nel appears in both her child and adult forms. In BLEACH: Heat of the Soul 6(2009), all three of her forms appeared in game, this included her Ressurection form.
