I don't think that was ever the issue here.
I don't think that was ever the issue here.

Obito Uchiha may have given up on reality, but Naruto hasn't given up on him. It's time for this Uchiha to understand the weight of his sins.

The Good

Obito completely lacks conviction.
Obito completely lacks conviction.

The art is well done, but that's not saying much when the vast majority of the pages are filled little more than Naruto and Obito just staring at each other.

The Bad

This is how the war ends?
This is how the war ends?

One of the hardest things to do in writing is to craft a good villain. You think it's easy, but it's not. Anyone can make a mustache-twirling baddy or mass killer, but those aren't who you want for your main antagonist. A truly great villain is a character that you may not agree with, but you understand their motivation. When it comes to Obito Uchiha, Kishimoto has utterly failed.

This idea of redemption worked when he used it with Nagato, because he had been manipulated by Obito for years. Obito has no excuse. Madara may have misled him, but he was dead for decades. Obito then went on to manipulate and kill possibly hundreds of thousands of people. "I was just following orders" has never been a valid defense in war. He then went so far as to kill Neji just to make Naruto feel despair. This attempt at redemption has come far, far too late.

Verdict 1/5

For the first time in a long time I struggled to read this chapter of NARUTO. On several occasions, I had to stop myself from skimming the pages. This may have been an acceptable conclusion to this war if it had been maybe a year long, but this has been stretching on for three years and had some of the biggest set-pieces in the series' history. This is the war of all wars for the NARUTO universe. Yet it looks to end with both sides shaking it out. At least it wasn't a fist bump.

FoxxFireArt, Madara still around and I bet he won't go down like that

Anyway, this feel like something from Persona 4. Have a feeling Naruto will say "I'm a shadow, your true self!" and turn into a monster or something.

Also, thanks Naruto, for telling us Obito never have parents.

That's not the point. It wasn't Madara that's been manipulating and murdering people all over the world for decades. It's been Obito all by himself. Who is Madara to Naruto? It was also Obito that had the power of the Ten-Tails and the Sage of Six Paths. Madara stepping in would completely lack the catharsis and closure this incredibly long arc deserves.

I wouldn't compare this with PERSONA 4. Mainly because the player didn't know Adachi was the villain until pretty much the end of the game, and he never took control of the power of Ameno-Sagiri. Obito is the very reason Naruto lost his parents and partly responsible for wiping out the Uchiha. Obito has been the villain since almost the beginning of the series.

"I am sorry for murdering all those people. I just wanted to be loved."

Two tropes that need to die or go on the back burner in Shonen:

1) Baddies really just being some lonely/sad child lashing out for attention

2) Baddies who get talked out of being villains

The first time you see either they seem like a new and refreshing take... then you keep seeing it over and over again and you realize that first show hoodwinked you into thinking it was doing something worth mentioning. To the point where now I cherish the generic bad guys who are bad for no real reason other than that being bad is cool. They're played out in a lot of western media but a breath of fresh air in anime.

I bet, it going to be reveal that Madara was controling Tobi and then Naruto get all mad. Also, I saw this coming when it was reveal Tobi was Obito, I pretty much give up hope (just want to see a cool fight now). Still wish it was Rin as Tobi

I wasn't really comparing, I just been playing Persona 4 Golden a lot. It just me typing out loud :)

I think this worked with Nagato much better because he had rather solid conviction. He also tried the virtuous path until he fell into despair. Obito basically just lost Rin then started killing everyone. With all the great villains he's had in the series, I'm shocked Kishimoto would use this guy for one of the really big-bads.

I'm not sure why he began this trend of redeeming -- or attempting to redeem -- villains prior to death.

I agree that not everyone should be redeemable but it is a very Eastern idea that no true evil exists (see Star Wars and Yin Yang) so it really shouldn't be this surprising. From the pics he did say he was going to atone for his sins so maybe that will entail something worthwhile? Does Japan have the death penalty? I don't think they do, so that likely plays into this as well. I mean they would probably try to redeem Hitler so yeah....
