Like anyone is going to willingly turn off a cash cow for the sake of story integrity. The publisher/network -expects- a drop off readership/watcher rate which is why such things as colour specials, double episodes and so forth exist, trying to entice people to come back.

The days of 26 episode series finished last decade, now they run till the money stops.

I think Naruto & Bleach need to be over and done with, and move on to different story.

I don't know about the anime, but if you read the manga then it's readily obvious at this point that it's coming to an end. Naruto's mastered the Kyuubi, the final member of Akatsuki is leading a world war, there are only two jinchuriki left (including Naruto)... Most of the plot threads are beginning to get tied up, this arc is going to last a long time, but it's the last arc.

The series is getting very close to the conclusion it has been playing towards since the beginning. To end it at the conclusion of this arc would seem to be the most reasonable finale. They COULD continue the story after Naruto inevitably becomes Hokage, and maybe they could pull it off, but it would be a risk. You never know if new villains and challenges will catch on, but if they can make it work, I'll tune back in (to the manga of course, not the anime).

I think Naruto still has to become Hokage...

Of the HST i do feel that Naruto will be the first one to end, going by where the manga is it definitily seems like things are starting to go in that direction.

It's a general rule that you should always leave the audience wanting more. Too many manga publishers forget this and continue a series long after its welcome has worn off.

I agree with the folks that said the best place to end it would be after this arc. Unless Kishimoto has something really good up his sleeve to extend it further, things should be winding down. This is the perfect time for Naruto (which is the best anime I've seen) to end.

That said, the Naruto universe is very rich. It need not die with Naruto. I think there's plenty of room for new stories in the same universe, following other characters. That said, as long as he's been doing Naruto, I suspect Kishimoto may be ready to try something new.
