Bleach #502 - Falling Soul

It's gettin' hard out here for a Shinigami.
It's gettin' hard out here for a Shinigami.

In a Nutshell

As Nodt turns Byakuya's Bankai against him, "killing" the captain and critically wounding Renji and Rukia in the process. Meanwhile, Kenpachi is doing his usual kicking ass and taking names thing.

The Good

  • Wow, so these are battles with actual stakes with life and death being on the line.
  • Kenpachi is about to do his thing.
  • A lot of well drawn frames and some particularly gory scenes.

The Bad

  • The return of the Luchador Vandy.

Rants and Raves

It's funny. On paper, everything about this chapter was pretty awesome but I couldn't get excited about much of what I saw despite the fact that I really enjoy the Bleach franchise. This isn't the manga's fault, but I believe a big kick for both this and Naruto was reading something and then thinking to myself, "this is going to over the top excellent once they animate it and throw vocals and score in the mix." Unfortunately, that's just not going to happen anymore for Bleach and what I'm left with are essentially storyboards for a television series that's never actually going to be made.

Grade

B+. I'm loving that there's an actual threat of life and death in this arc and, despite my desires to see it animated, this was good chapter for Bleach.

Naruto #595 - Chaps

The time for talking has reached its conclusion.
The time for talking has reached its conclusion.

In a Nutshell

Tobi finally shows that he can do more than beat up children and get his ass handed to him in every battle that matters.

The Good

  • We finally get the Tobi vs Naruto fight we've been waiting the entire arc for.
  • TOBI IS A BEAST!!!!!

The Bad

  • Chapters like this really show the weakness of still image mediums at conveying action.
  • "Chaps"... lol. Terrible title.

Rants and Raves

Much like Bleach, this chapter was awesome on paper but I couldn't get as excited as I felt I should have been. The main reason is that the action was awesome, but the medium of manga simply can't capture that acrobatics in this fight. There were frames that I had to study multiple times to #1 grasp what was being drawn and #2 tell what was happening. I think that at this point, the artist is essentially viewing the chapters as storyboards for the anime and is providing play-by-play for the anime creators. This is awesome for animation junkies like me, but as a manga reader much of the art comes off as a jumbled, incomprehensible mess. Unlike Bleach, however, Naruto still has an anime being produced and whatever episode this content falls in should be unfathomably good as long as they don't go ultra cheap and crappy on the animation.

Grade

A-. I would give it a flat out A, but I just couldn't make out half of what was going on. I get the desire to draw it in a way that is instructions for the animation team, but I think it was done at the expense of manga readers. Despite that, what's happening here is awesome. Uchiha insanity continues.

I have to agree with what you said about Naruto, I couldn't understand some of the action scenes (or even make out the characters in a couple of them.) but after waiting months for this, we finally see the battle. also, Bleach's final arc has been rough enough to add the horror genre to bleach, even if Byakuya isn't really dead, the battles are getting more and more gruesome.

Chances are the rest of Bleach will be animated, either in a new TV series or through an OAV (which I would prefer)

I disagree. Kenpachi does not take names.

I have put off many action manga because I do not want to deal with reading action. Sometimes it can be frustrating.

@AgentJ: I don't know about that. The anime isn't on hiatus. It was cancelled because the ratings were terrible for it's timeslot.

For 13 or 26 episode series, there's a case to be made that it reached the end of it's production run and maybe there will be more in the future. Bleach didn't reach the end of it's run though, it was canceled. I think its chances of having another anime series anytime soon (within 5 years) are incredibly slim.

@Toxin45: I hope he stays inside that statue or comes out only to be immediately put inside of Tobi. Giant monster battles are my least favorite type and the Ten tails is pretty much guaranteed to go that route.

Naruto chapter was confusing, didn't really know what happen. I guess I'll wait two weeks for SJ Alpha, maybe it be more clearer

Only thing I like about Bleach was Kenpachi, other then that, it was same old, same old

The ratings were terrible because the show was in filler more often than it was in canon material. The manga is still one of the best sellers in the country. So they are waiting for the manga to catch up (Frankly, what every anime based on a manga should do, rather than just keep pumping out episodes each week) and will either find itself with an OAV or a "second season". Which would be kind of hilarious.

@AgentJ: The manga has had a massive fall off in popularity, going from being in the Top 3 to barely making it in the Top 10. If being in filler was a death knell, Naruto would be gone. It has about as much filler as Bleach but unlike Bleach, Naruto filler is some of the laziest anime production you'll ever see while Bleach seems to pull out of the top tier animation talent to work on it's filler. Bleach just isn't anywhere near as popular in Japan as it used to be. That's why it was canceled. There's zero filler in the manga and it's popularity dropped just like the anime did. Filler is not the primary reason.

Its popularity isn't what it used to be, but it is still the top selling volume of the week when it comes out. Far less popular series have recurring shows. It will be back. And like I said, I honestly prefer it that way.

Maybe you don't remember, but Naruto's ratings dropped WAY off when they did their years of fillers. But at least when that was over they had mostly new content. I've barely watched the Bleach anime for a while because it has either been filler or single chapter fights have been dragged out over multiple episodes. It was terrible.

I'm really loving Bleach at the moment and I'm glad Kenpachi has arrived, because I've been thinking for the past few weeks that he's the answer to destroying them all. And he's taking on boss moustache solo.
