Narutaru

Cheerful schoolgirl Shiina Tamai lives alone with her jet pilot father. Swimming during a summer vacation with her grandparents, she almost dies when she is swept out to sea. Her life is saved by a strange star-shaped creature. She names him Hoshimaru-the Round Star-and they become friends. He can fly, transform into different shapes, and absorb objects into his body, and even though he doesn't talk, he and Shiina can understand each other. When she returns to school for the new year, Hoshimaru disguises himself as her backpack; but they learn that other children have also met strange creatures, some with their masters-and they're not all friendly. The creatures are called "dragons" and some of their young friends are easily manipulated through their own weaknesses-like arrogant Satomi who thinks she should be one of the elite running the world, or knife-crazy Akinori. A tale of alien invasion that starts out cute and perky and gets darker, based on the 1998 manga in Comic Afternoon by Mohiro Kito.
