Nappa is one of the few survivors of the mighty Saiyan race. He comes to Earth with Vegeta in search of the Dragon Balls to gain immortality.
Before the Saiyan home planet was destroyed, he was the general of the Saiyan army.
In Dragonball GT, he has a role in one episode where he comes back to life and destroys an entire city in a few seconds, before being killed by Vegeta... yet again.
