Anime Laws of Physics

Brother and Sister

A male and a female member of a family that share the same parents.

Cats

Feline animal with four legs and says "meow." Many are found hanging around animes and mangas.

Childhood Friend

The character has known the protagonist for a long time, typically all his/her life. If he/she's from the opposite gender there's a high chance he/she has a crush on the main character.

Comedy

Nearly every anime has a comedic moment here or there. Everyone likes to laugh.

Convenient Censorship

Convenient Censorship such as steam, hair and beams of light are often used in anime and manga to show naked characters while obscuring their "naughty bits".

Cooking

Someone or something to do with cooking.

Cosplay

The practice of dressing like characters from anime, manga, video games, and even novels, TV shows, celebrities, etc.

Delinquents

One who disobeys or breaks rules or laws, often used to describe younger individuals such as high schoolers who cause trouble.

Detective

A Detective is one who works to solve crimes and mysteries of the world using not brawn, but their minds. These can be part of law enforcement or freelance.

Fan Service

Fan Service is often a sexually provocative moment or pose that takes place in manga and anime. It usually has no real purpose to a story, and serves as a lurid visual.

Female Ninjas

A Female Ninja in Japanese is referred to as a kunoichi. They were given special training that took advantage of a woman's natural gifts.

Flashback

Used frequently in Anime to either recap past events or provide a back story for a character, either their origin story or their off-screen training of new attack. Sometime and entire episode/chapter would be a entire flashback.

Ghosts

A ghost is a dead persons spirit that roams the earth usually attached to where they died or refusing to go to the after life until there are finished on earth.

Grandmother

The mother of one's mother or father.

Harem

The term "harem" is frequently used to describe manga and anime series that feature one man surrounded by a variety of female romantic candidates.

Japanese Food

The food of Japan in its many flavors, from its own traditional cuisine (such as sushi) to its adaptations of other nations' foods (be cautious eating American-style Japanese pizza).

Jealousy

A feeling of jealous envy (especially of a rival).

Kendo

Kendo translates to "Way of the Sword". It is a sword competition using bamboo swords called a shinai. It is a popular martial arts practice in Japan.

Kuudere

A character, often cold and harsh on the outside; but swirling with feelings inside. Much like an igloo, they keep an ice-cold wall, in an ice-cold world; just to protect the warmth inside.

Lecher

Characters who exercise their strong libidinous desires in unwholesome ways, such as peeping on the objects of their desire, making inappropriate comments, stealing underwear etc. Though typically middle-aged or elderly men with a penchant for young girls, there are probably a few dirty old women out there.

A list of lesbians that appear in anime and manga.

Magic

Magic is an often used term in fiction. It is the concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods and breaking the physical laws.

Maids & Butlers

Maids and Butlers are highly popular within anime and manga. They can simply be a job, or they can be a lifestyle for loyal servants to a master or mistress. Identified by a particular uniform. Also popular in cosplay.

Manga Iconography

Common visual conventions seen in manga and anime to convey emotions, often for comical effect.

Martial Arts

Seen in just about every form of anime at least at one point. The key component that makes Shounen popular among boys. As well as Ancient art in itself

Moronic character

The kind of character always gets into trouble by his or her bad luck, silliness, and/or cluelessness. A common source of comedy.

Mother

A woman who has given birth to or raised a child.

Ninjas

A ninja is a (typically Japanese) warrior, trained in martial arts fighting styles, and whom typically specializes in stealthy tactics and unorthodox arts of war.

Nosebleed

Bleeding from the nose, in manga/anime it mostly used as a sight gag that happens when a character is thinking or witnessing something perverted.

Oblivious To Love

Someone being completely oblivious about people liking him/her.

Parody

Parody is a style of work that closely resembles or mocks preexisting material or genres for comedic effect.

Potential Love Interest

The character has a chance of ending up with the protagonist. It means either the protagonist or the heroine(or maybe both) have feelings for the other.

Protagonist

The main character of a story or plot. Most forms of fiction have the protagonist as a hero but there are rare occasions with an evil or not-so-noble protagonist.

Rivals

Rivals are competitor to someone. Unlike an enemy, rivals could have similar goals but disagree on the process.

Rock Paper Scissors (janken)

Rock Paper Scissors is known in Japan as "janken". The hand gestures and rules are similar. A game that is often used to decide friendly disputes.

Sadist

A Sadist is a type of person who attains gratification out of witnessing the suffering of others, either physical or emotional pain.

Shougi

Shougi is a Japanese game similar to chess.

Shrine Maiden

A Shrine Maiden is a female caretaker of the Shinto shrines of Japan, and they are connected to the oracles from kami. Considered to be a medium/prophet between earth and the spirit realm. Traditionally wearing a white kimono and red hakama.

Shōnen

Literally means "boy" in Japanese, but is also used to refer to Japan's biggest manga demographic: pre-teen and teenage boys.

Sisters

Female members of a family that share the same parents.

Smoker

A person who smokes tobacco.

Talking Animals

Usually special animals that have the ability to speak to humans. Talking animals are a big part in several animes and mangas

Tsundere

"Tsundere" is a portmanteau of two Japanese phrases: "tsuntsun" and "deredere" and refers to characters who act hostile to the object of their affections, but secretly (or not-so-secretly) harbor feelings for them.
