Previously an S-class mage of the Fairy Tail guild and one of their most powerful members. He now serves as the king of Edolas.

Origin

Mystogan is one of Fairy Tail's strongest mages. As an S-Class mage, he is allowed on the second floor, though he rarely visits the guild hall. Only a few members have even met him, as he uses his illusion magic to put everyone in the guild to sleep as he comes and goes. Plus, he shrouds he face and hair at all times.

Creation

Mystogan, who is created by Hiro Mashima, has some spoiler warning in his creation info. Mashima created Mystogan for the purpose to introduce the concept of Alternate Reality Counterpart into the series. As Mystogan is a prince in Edolas who came to Earthland to stop his people from stealing magical energy from other dimensions,  his Earthland counterpart was a slave at the Tower of Heaven who became corrupted by the Dark Magic of Zeref and became a devoted follower to him. He made his first appearance in Chapter 24 of the manga and Episode 10 of the anime. He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version and Rob McCollum in the English version.

Major Story Arcs

Phantom Lord Arc

Proof of Mystogan's Power.
Proof of Mystogan's Power.
Following the grave injury that Fairy Tail 's master Makarov suffered after fighting Phantom Lord, Erza and company tried to contact the guild's remaining S-class mages to bolster their ranks. Despite the dire situation, both Mystogan and Laxus refused (for various reasons) to be directly involved, and continued to stay away from the guild. Toward the end of the arc, it was revealed that Mystogan was actually busy traveling the globe to recover all of Marakov's lost magic. Well, that and destroying everyone of Phantom Lord's sub-bases. This act is ultimately what makes Marakov's recovery possible, though Mystogan simply drifted away after this.

Fighting Festival Arc

Mystogan's Confrontation With Laxus.
Mystogan's Confrontation With Laxus.
After Laxus attempts to destroy the town, Mystogan shows up to stop him. They debate about which is the most powerful, and then quickly spar. While there was no clear victory for either men, the scuffle forces Mystogan's mask to come off, revealing his face in front of Natsu and Erza who arrived after noticing the explosions from afar. They are both taken back since his face completely resembled Jellal's. Upon seeing their speechless expressions, he merely comments that he knows of Jellal but is not him. He suddenly leaves the battle after noticing the painful and tearful look on Erza's face.

Edolas Arc

 The man behind the mask.
 The man behind the mask.
Shortly after joining Fairy Tail, Wendy manages to run into an ailing Mystogan. He reveals his face to her, and then speaks about how it was he who had found and protected her when she was young, not the other Jellal who remembered nothing of her. At this point he begs her to leave the city, as the "Anima" he has been tasked with holding back becomes too strong, and will soon destroy the entire town, including Fairy Tail. The anima, it seems was a device intended to literally suck magic out of Earthland. Hailing from alternate dimension, called Edolas, where magic is rationed, its residents came up with the plan to take that magic, via force, from our universe.

It seems that Mystogan is indeed Jellal, but is an alternate version who originates from Edolas. It also seems that he had major qualms over the actions of his peers, and thus made destroying these Animas his personal goal. Despite this, he fails, and the entire town of Magnolia and all of Fairy Tail is sucked into the portal, and condensed into magic rich Lacrima crystals. Natsu, Happy, Wendy and Charle are the last standing figures, seemingly anchored by their strong, dragon slayer magic, while Mystogan was no where to be found, and hasn't been seen since.

Mystogan was also able to save Lucy and Gajeel from being turned into Lacrima by sending them to Edolas. He supplied them with X-Balls, medicine which allows them to use their magic in Edolas, and told Gajeel how to free the other guild members from the Lacrima using his dragon slayer magic. While the remaining members, including Erza and Gray who were freed by Gajeel, were trying to get to the Lacrima, Mystogan has been searching for a way to send the Giant Lacrima back to Earthland and revert everyone back to normal. With the Lacrima safe, Mystogan made it just in time to send it back to Earthland with an Anima. He then reveals himself to everyone that he is the Prince of Edolas. As everyone celebrates, King Faust arrives in the Dragon Mech called Doroma Animu. Although Mystogan challenges his father, he loses intentionally in order to save Pantherlily who was injured by Erza Knightwalker.

After saving Pantherlily, Mystogan recruits him for "one last job". After reaching the room where an Anima is produced, he reveals his plan to reverse the Anima, sending all of the magic in Edolas to Earthland. As everyone in Edolas is panicking over the outflow of magic, Mystogan tells Pantherliliy to kill him. He reasons that in order to create and maintain a stable new world without magic, a villain and hero are necessary. By killing him, the "villain", Pantherlily would become the king of the new world. Pantherlily refuses to kill him and instead offers to be the villain because they need someone to quell the chaos in Edolas. Mystogan refuses to kill Pantherlily who wishes for him to have a happy life. They are soon interrupted by one of the palace guards telling them that three people are wreaking havoc in town. It is revealed to be Natsu, Gajeel and Wendy.

Natsu tells the citizens of Edolas that he is "Great Demon Lord Dragneel" and that he is responsible for taking their magic from their world. Mystogan tells Natsu to stop but Natsu just challenges him to beat him while revealing him as the prince of Edolas. It turns out that one of the Exceed, Nadi, overheard Pantherlily's and Mystogan's conversation and told them so Natsu and the others decided to act as the villain in order for Mystogan to be the people's hero. Mystogan ran to where Natsu was and tried to stop him by casting his sleeping spell. But with Anima absorbing all the magic in Edolas, the spell quickly disappeared. Mystogan tried to convince Natsu that his plan won't work, but instead received a punch from him. In retaliation, Mystogan landed a blow on Natsu, which was met with cheers from the crowd in support of their prince. Natsu then began asking him if he remembered the rules for leaving Fairy Tail. As they were fighting, they each said one rule after the other, and when the final rule was spoken, both of them landed their final blow. As Natsu fell to the ground their bodies begin to glow and float towards the sky and into the Anima. Mystogan then said his final farewell to Pantherlily, Natsu, Gajeel, Wendy, and the fellow members of Fairy Tail as they went back to Earthland. Standing firm on the rubbles of where he fought, Mystogan declared that he has defeated the Great Demon-Lord Dragneel and that the humans of Edolas will live on without magic.

Powers & Abilities

Magic Staves

Although Mystogan does not have any innate magic, he does use five Magic Staves to cast incredibly powerful spells which has easily earned him an S-Class rank. With powers that match his reclusive nature, he has a strong control over perceived reality. Though, beyond illusions, Mystogan has proven himself to be incredibly fast, traveling all around the world in a matter of hours. Also, his powers seem to unconsciously influence his environment, often making it rain where he goes. Most recently he has mentioned his connection to a destructive force called Anima. It is questionable if this force influences his strength, or if it is his strength entirely that holds it at bay.
