Call this the Secret Origin of a Sexual Freak. And I’m not referring to the titular Mysterious Girlfriend - - I’m talking about the dude.

Listen… I’ve watched a lot of weird and extreme shit, OK? And this featured the grossest act of mutual affection I’ve seen since the egg yolk make-out in TAMPOCO. Dude licks her puddle of drool up like its honey? That’s nasty, man. So nasty that I had to keep shifting my focus of vision away from the picture and onto the very narrow space occupied by the sub-titles.

Yeah, I don’t need to tell you that this was gross. What I do need to do, however, is take the less-than-obvious angle on the material and talk about how this sort-of made me think of THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (of all things). See, the flick basically showed you how an odd guy with some quirks ran into a series of circumstances that enabled and encouraged certain latent parts of his personality to develop until he finally became an extreme personality like world-class con man, Tom Ripley.

The same concepts apply to this kid’s sexual freakiness, here. If this girl hadn’t joined his class, he would’ve probably grown up into a generally normal guy with some dormant fetishes that’d only be occasionally sated by some porn or hentai he’d watch while his wife wasn’t looking. However, because his first girlfriend is not only the kind of girl who finds drool-licking romantic, but also the sort who’ll encourage him to suck on her finger instead of kissing… well….

Put it this way - - for this kid’s sake, he better pray to heaven that he never breaks up with this girl. After they break up (and that’s inevitable, c’mon,) he is going to have the hardest time imaginable trying to find another girl who’ll indulge the sort of peccadilloes that've already been fostered in him. Like, seriously, there’s no going back for him, now…

Yeesh… this show was almost like some psycho-sexual case study. I don't know if that's a good thing, but it's a.... thing, certainly.

Watch this episode, “Mysterious Girlfriend” below and decide for yourself.

I haven't watched any of the anime but I've read a bunch of the manga (the first 40 chapters I believe) and despite the weird setup, I think it's a really cute and enjoyable series. I dunno how the anime treats it, though.

It took me a while to get used to the drool. Then I ended up loving this show. Can't blame you for being grossed out though.

I don't blame you for being grossed the fuck out either, but I got used to it by Episode 3 and it turned out to be very good ever since I started the series. I haven't read the manga yet, but I plan to.

I'm biased as I love the show but keep watching its gets stranger and the characters evolve in odd directions. The manga has great dream scenes but some of the later chapters drag on to long and don't add anything to the story.

Its a cute Manga and the anime goes a little far with the drool sound effects that gross some people out, I love the music and the old style animation and they really don't go to far with the fan service.

It one of the best romance animes out there and despite being strange with the whole drool thing, it surprisingly touching. I like that you see it as a case study because, in a way, it is one and not many were able to see it that way. If your willing to, keep watching and see how deep it goes. I mean I did a multiple post about all 13 episodes.

I got a real weirdo vibe from this. The drool was gross and as it goes on it only gets more and more gross with the spit drinking. On top of that, despite the weirdo music and tone it seemed headed toward standard panty shot show territory and I dropped it after about 4 episodes.

Have you seen a lot of romance anime? It's hard for me to believe that this show eventually develops into something capable of giving series like Nana, Honey & Clover, etc a run for their money in terms of being a good romance series.

Wait, no comment at all on the retro art style? Considering your preferences--or at least what I've gathered reading your articles--I thought you'd really dig the retro look. I liked the music and general vibe too, it felt pretty unique.

As for the drool thing, I'm kind of amazed at how strongly some people react to it. I know this is the obvious thing to point out, but... couples exchange drool when they kiss all the time, but it seems as soon as you add a finger in the middle of the process it becomes gross. Weird? Absolutely. Gross? Not so much, when you think about it. In the world of "sexual fetishes" this has to be one of the most tame and least gross ones out there.

I mean sure, if it's not your thing then it's not your thing. I'll admit, when Tsubaki jabbed his finger into Urabe's drool left on her desk I was all "dude, whaaaaat?" - it's a natural reaction to something that weird. I think you're missing the point though, it's not a fetish, Tsubaki does it absentmindedly. It's all about the bond between himself and Urabe which is explored more as the series progresses. There's a fairly substantial supernatural element to the show that isn't entirely obvious in the first episode.

It would be cool if you took another stab at this one Tom. It proved to be a pretty popular show, and I've seen a lot of people say they weren't sure about the first episode but were glad they kept watching. Even if you really dislike the show, maybe you could humour us for another episode or two. I can tell from the comments here that quite a few of us watched this one.

I couldn't get past the description of this one. Okay, I skimmed through the first episode but I didn't go any farther.

It's not the drool that couples fetish over. It's touching each other's bodies. Kissing is an intimate way of doing that very quickly. Not saying that there isn't some culture out there where saliva is a preferred method of intimacy, but I've never heard about it being in Japanese culture.

I see what you are saying though. Saliva exchange is not really gross considering how people kiss and stuff. Gross isn't quite the word for it, but it is definitely beyond weird considering the volume of saliva exchanged and the obsession over it. There are some insects where saliva is very important to share with a mate, so that's a start.

I literally face-palmed, you sound like a 6 year old. Kissing is basically exchanging drool, I don't understand how this is any less/more gross. Also this series is a romantic comedy with ecchi as far as I'm concerned, not straight up romance.

Psycho-sexual study indeed, did you like how they included the dream sequence? Freudian themes much.

It's gross because if I stick my finger in my mouth in real life, you couldn't even see the spit on it. In this series, it leaves a thick and goopy honey-like layer that's a few centimeters thick and makes long strings of saliva similar to Ninja Turtle cheesy pizza stretching. In no way is that in line with anything that would happen in real life other than some extreme deepthroat gag porn and it's nothing like what a kiss looks like.

Additionally, the point of kissing isn't to drink spit. That's not the pleasurable aspect of it. In this series, that's so much of what's enjoyable about it that they often leave out the kissing and just go straight to spit drinking. At one point, she fills up a vial with spit and the guy drinks from it every day.

Comparing that to a kiss is lol worthy. It'd be like someone getting grossed out at an anime where someone is squeezed so hard that they explode into a mist of blood and organs and the response is, "what's so gross? People hug all the time." Yeah, that's way more than a hug just like what happens in this is way more than just a simple kiss.

@sickVisionz: It all about looking at the actions of the character in a different light. It hard to nail down the meanings of it but according to the author of the series said he wanted to talk about a relationship without sex. Also love in a way is kinda weird so the drool stuff just adds to that weirdness.

@Lurkero: Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply that kissing is all about saliva, but there's no getting away from that aspect of it, either.

I'm glad I'm one of the ones who threw caution to the wind and carried on watching, it really surprised me. I think relatively speaking everything was all handled fairly tastefully, especially considering the direction the show could have gone in.

Well that's fair enough and perfectly reasonable, but that seems to be more of a personal dislike of the presentation or art style rather than of the subject matter itself.

Additionally, the point of kissing isn't to drink spit. That's not the pleasurable aspect of it. In this series, that's so much of what's enjoyable about it that they often leave out the kissing and just go straight to spit drinking. If you've watched up to that point then you know the focus isn't drinking saliva for pleasure. Tsubaki wasn't at home jerking off with the vial jammed down his throat (I apologize for that vivid image). Urabe specifically instructs him to drink from that vial before going to sleep so it will affect his dreams, it's not just for him to get off on. It's all about the bond they share, not a fetish they share.

Sure, I imagine there may have been some people who watched the show for the saliva aspect and nothing else. But I think the point here is that Mysterious Girlfriend X isn't only for those people (pretty niche audience, don't you think?) and it's an entertaining show regardless. Thankfully, I felt much more emphasis was placed on the titular mysterious girlfriend, the protagonist Tsubaki, and their relationship, and I enjoyed watching that.

Oh man! Now this is why I love anime! The intrigue and of course the drool in this episode is to die for.

1st thing .. the art style an animation for the series is top drawer . Spot on ..top shelf classic.

2nd thing to note is there is more to her drool than meets the eye... ok that is just gross .ewww eye!

3rd yes its a first love romance fetish-y sorta thing. But the show really is not about drool. It is about dreams an weird teen age love!Well it could also be about scissors for self defense! But its not about what you thought it was about.err i think.

An its a oddity of romantic pseudo fetish slice of life retro hybrid anime.Well worth a watch.Even a Timex.

The animation if pretty cool and the art style is definitely unique for 2013. I just couldn't get over the drool. I actually was intrigued by the series but after a while it was devolving into a spit fetish and panty shot show where each episode was seemingly trying to top itself in fanservice and gross out content. It was an easy drop at that point.

This show feels like if David Cronenberg made a chased romanitic comedy about high school teens. I got about 8 episodes deep. It is body horror, the idea of him getting sick from his lack of her drool, is well disturbing. Her mysterious life and then the scissor thing is interesting. The show can be gawked at for it's premise and i'm cool with that, but if you can get over the fetishization of drool, you just might find something.

Personally, things like this never bother me. I also grew up on a steady string of John Waters films.

Chalk this up to a long line of shows that I walked away from thinking, "Every time I was starting to like you, you went and did [blank]." Never quite got over the spit drinking and every time it happened it pulled me out of the show as quickly as Papakiki's insistence on making a little girl eat things that looked... phallic.
