We are introduced to Orphen, and his apprentice, Majic. Orphen has been lingering in Majic's home town for several months, after being paid to teach Majic how to be a sorcerer. However, Majic's training could be described as very slow at best. Instead, Orphen has been spying on the home of Majic's childhood friend, Cleao, along with the help at Cleao's home, Dortin and Volkan.
After confronting Orphen over his snooping, Cleao discovers that Orphen wasn't spying on her - he was spying on one of her family heirlooms, the Sword of Baltanders. However, Orphen is not alone in his interest in the sword. Two other forces want to claim the sword for their own. One is the school of magic that Orphen has left, The Tower of Fang. The other is the dangerous dragon, Bloody August, which Orphen is able to drive off, after calling it by another name - Azalie.
