The various misadventures of Twilight Sparkle and friends as they work together to find and showcase the true meaning of Friendship.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the fourth generation of the My Little Pony animated series. It has been revamped to cater to young girls while at the same time challenging the conventions of a "girl's show" reflecting on this new age of children. The creator behind this revamp, Lauren Faust, previously worked on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Both of which pushed to break boundaries and stereotypes for children's television. Friendship is Magic has been licensed in Japan and airs both in original English and dubbed in Japanese.
The series has an impressive cult following with viewers who are not a part of the core demographic, often referring to themselves as Bronies. They are typically very upfront about it and wear their passion on their sleeves. There are almost equally as many people on the internet who hate the subculture that's developed around the show, dubbing it the cancer of the internet.
Twilight Sparkle is studious pony who lives in Equestria; a magical land populated primarily by ponies. There are three major varieties of pony that live alongside each other; Earth Ponies, Pegasus Ponies, and Unicorn Ponies. Unicorns like Twilight have magical abilities, Pegasi can fly, and while Earth Ponies neither have horns nor wings, they are generally the most in touch with nature, plants, and animals. A fourth variant also exists; Alicorn Ponies have both horns and wings, and are generally considered royalty. Twilight's mentor, Princess Celestia, is one such Alicorn and the ruler of Equestria. Because Twilight does nothing but study she has become very antisocial, her only real friend being a baby dragon named Spike; her faithful assistant. Because of this, Princess Celestia asks Twilight Sparkle to go to Ponyville to meet new ponies and learn about the magic of friendship. Twilight soon befriends five other female ponies; Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash, and her new adventures in Ponyville begin.
