There are mushi, miniscule creatures who coexist within our world, bringing either help or harm to those humans who cross their path, whether by choice or by coincidence. Then there are mushishi, those people who deal with the problems caused by mushi, and help to retain the fragile ecosystem between us and them.
Ginko is one such mushishi. Join him on his travels as he faces a whole host of mushi, in different sizes and shapes, as well as a whole slew of characters, as individual in their natures as the mushi themselves.
The manga was written by Yuki Urashibara, and first debuted in 1999, in Kodansha's seinen publication Afternoon. It won the Excellence Prize at the 2003 Japan Media Arts Festival, and the 2006 Kodansha Manga Award.

The main protagonist of the series, as well as the titular Mushishi, or "mushi master". It is his duty to ensure that the balance between humans and mushi, the simple organisms existing within our ecosystem, remains at a constant equilibrium. He lost the sight in one eye to a mushi named Ginko, and sacrificed his name so that he could live. He often smokes, so as to drive away the mushi that would otherwise be attached to him.
