The American Library Awards seals have been announced, and while a lot of it is expected-- Neil Gaiman's Newbery for The Graveyard Book, and absolutely nothing for J.K. Rowling's Tales of Beetle the Bard –there was one surprising entry...for Seirei no Moribito, the popular fantasy light novel series currently being released in English by Scholastic's Arthur A. Levine line:
Mildred L. Batchelder Award for the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States. “Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit,” originally published in Japanese, written by Nahoko Uehashi and translated by Cathy Hirano, is the winner of the 2009 Mildred L. Batchelder Award. The book is published by Arthur A. Levine, an imprint of Scholastic.
Congratulations to Hirano and Uehashi-sensei! And hey...good time for VIZ to be starting that sci-fi/fantasy novel line, eh?
