Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates with the powers of the Gum-Gum Fruit. He has the dream of becoming the next King of the Pirates.
Luffy grew up on Dawn Island in Windmill Village located in East Blue. The village was often visited by the Red-Haired Pirates, and he became especially close to their captain, Shanks. For a year they used the village as their base, but they refused to let Luffy join his crew, playfully teasing him as just a kid. When the mountain-bandit Higuma showed up in Makino's pub, Luffy watched as he mocked Shanks and spilled drinks over him, but Shanks did nothing except laugh. When Shanks tried to stop Luffy from storming off in shame of his role model, Luffy's arm stretched despite walking away. During the incident, Luffy had eaten the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit the crew had brought from the Grand Line. His body was now made out of rubber, and he'd never be able to swim again. When Shanks crew was out to sea, Luffy had a run in with Higuma, and she stood up to the thugs. Higuma took Luffy captive and threatened to kill him. Shanks had returned, and when he learned Luffy was hurt trying to defend him. His crew made short work of these bandits. He didn't care if he was being made fun of, but he would never let anyone hurt one of his friends. Out of fear, Higuma threw a smoke bomb and ran with Luffy to the harbor.
Taking a boat out to sea, Higuma tried to kill Luffy by throwing him into the water, but he was swallowed whole by the local sea serpent that often terrorized the harbor. Luffy would've been killed as well, but Shanks arrived just in time. With a single look, Shanks terrified the monster away. Luffy then noticed that when Shanks had saved Luffy, he had lost his left arm to the beast. Shanks didn't care. He was just happy that Luffy was safe. Back at the harbor, the crew was leaving the East Blue to return to the Grand Line. Luffy had given up trying to be a member of Shank's crew. He told him that he wanted to be a pirate on his own. After Shanks teased him again that he was too little to ever be a pirate, Luffy screamed out:
" One day I'll have a ship and a crew better than yours!! And we'll have the biggest hoard of treasure in the world!! I'm gonna be King of the Pirate!!! "
Monkey D. Luffy "One Piece" Vol. 1 Ch. 1
Suddenly, Shanks placed his straw hat onto Luffy's head. He called it his treasure and told him he was trusting Luffy with it with the promise that he'd return it once he had become a great pirate. The crew left and didn't return.
Luffy's grandfather Garp returned, and was shocked to learn about the incident with Shanks. Garp wanted Luffy to be a Marine soldier, like himself. He took Luffy from WIndmill Village and into Mount Colvo to live with a group of bandits, led by Curly Dadan. It was there he met Ace, and Garp told them that they were going to be brothers from then on. Every day, Luffy tried to follow Ace, but was always left behind in the dangerous jungle. With every trip, Luffy made it further in until he found the edge of the forest to the area called Grey Terminal. Ace had been robbing pirates with a young boy named Sabo. Luffy stumbled onto their treasure. Before Ace and Sabo could decide what to do with Luffy. One of the pirates Ace had robbed was from the Bluejam Pirates and showed up to find only Luffy. Luffy took a terrible beating to try and find out where Ace was, but Luffy wouldn't say. Ace and Sabo later arrived to save Luffy and run. When asked why he didn't say anything, Luffy cried that if he had Ace wouldn't be his friend.
Ace, Luffy, and Sabo bonded after this and shared a drink of sake as a pledge of their brotherhood. They trained and fought together to become strong pirates when they grew up. Despite Luffy's powers, he could never defeat Ace or Sabo. Later Luffy learned that Sabo wasn't an orphan, but the child of a noble family in High Town. He had run away because his family didn't care about him, and used him to elevate their own social status. The three brothers were soon captured by the Bluejam Pirates, who had been hired by Sabo's father. To save them, Sabo agreed to return home. Luffy followed Ace's lead to work with Bluejam's crew on jobs to transport crates around Grey Terminal.
The Grey Terminal was engulfed in a fire. Luffy and Ace were trapped in the flames with the Bluejam Pirates. They fought, and were saved by Dadan and her men. She stayed behind to help Ace who refused to run away. Her men ran away with Luffy. Days later, Ace and Dadan returned, but they also heard from one of Dadan's men that he witnessed Sabo being murdered as he tried to sail out to sea. Ace and Luffy continued their training until Ace was 16, and he left out on his own. When Luffy reached 16, he thanked the Dadan Family and sailed off from Windmill Village to find his own crew. First, he had one little bit of business to tend to. Using the skills he had refined through the years. Luffy defeated the sea monster who nearly killed him and took Shanks arm with the Gum-Gum Pistol attack.
Moneky D. Luffy is the lead protagonist of the series One Piece that was created by Eiichiro Oda. Luffy's creation was used in two previous one shots stories before the creation of the final in One Piece and both were titled "Romance Dawn". Only minor changes were made and Luffy's design and personality remained the same through from the beginning. Both versions of the story had Luffy interacting in some way with a Nami-like character. The goal of both of these Luffys differ from the final version to be King of the Pirates.
Eiichiro Oda took inspiration for Luffy from the Akira Toriyama series, Dragon Ball. Luffy is an innocent and often simple minded character, but very honest and kind. Similar to Shanks, Luffy doesn't care if you make fun of him, but will not tolerate if you hurt the people he cares for. Luffy is nearly always seen wearing a vest, long shorts, sandals, and his trademark Straw Hat. Luffy also has a self inflicted scar under his left eye.
The finalized version of Luffy first appeared in One Piece Volume 1, CH. 1 "Romance Dawn", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 1"I’m Luffy! The Man Who’s Gonna Be King of the Pirates!". His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is done by Colleen Clinkenbeard. Luffy's only real weapon is his own body. He uses his rubber form to create new and more powerful attacks.
Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, but his crew are more his friends than servants.
Each have their own dreams and goals, but they all have come together to support his dream to become King of the Pirates. He's more interested in the adventure than personal wealth.
" One day I'll have a ship and a crew better than yours!! And we'll have the biggest hoard of treasure in the world!! I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!! "
Monkey D. Luffy "One Piece" Vol. 1 Ch. 1
Not much has changed in the evolution of the character Luffy in the One Piece series. His basic design has remained the same, but with only subtle changes to his clothes. Originally, Luffy had always had his vests buttoned close, but later on it was always open and he was given a more lean muscular body. The color scheme has changed in his clothes with each story arc that followed the Davy Back Fight Arc, but the design remained the same. The greatest evolution for Luffy has been in the use of his Gum-Gum Devil Fruit powers, finding new and inventive ways to change the shape and increase the power with each new powerful foe. After the Thriller Bark Arc, a sleeping power was awakened in Luffy called Haki, but he would remain unaware of this talent for some time.

In the war of Whitebeard Pirates versus the Marines, Luffy witnessed the death of his brother Ace before his very eyes, and suffered near fatal injuries himself at the hands of Admiral Akainu. In failing to save his brother, Luffy saw himself as weak and began to question his dream of being the King of the Pirates. Through the intervention of the fish-man Jimbei and first mate of the Roger Pirates, Silvers Rayleigh; he realized he still had his crew to live for but would need to become much stronger. For two years the crew was separated, and in that time Luffy was trained to use his abilities of Haki by Rayleigh. The injuries he suffered from Akainu left a large X-shaped scar across his chest. He would reunited with his crew at Sabaody Archipelago and sail off to Fish-man Island to begin their adventure again in the second half of the Grand Line called The New World.
Luffy sailed out into the East Blue on his little boat until he was out of water. He was heading to a whirlpool, and climbed in his empty barrel since he couldn't swim. He fell asleep as he was rocked about, and it was found floating by the band of pirates led by Alvida. He burst out of the barrel as he woke up and shocked the pirates around him. He rolled away in the barrel and ran into a glasses-wearing boy named Coby. He's a high strung boy who had been abducted into serving on Alvida's crew, but his true dream was to join the Marines. In his way, Luffy inspired Coby to finally stand up to Alvida. Luffy took the blow from her heavy club meant for Coby, and Luffy returned with one of his own, knocking her clean out. Luffy demanded a ship for him and Coby to leave on. Luffy wanted to find the bounty-hunter Zoro that Alvida had mistaken him for, and they head out for Shell Town.
In Shell Town, Coby and Luffy found that the people were afraid of the names of both Luffy and Captain Morgan, the commander of the island's Marine based. Both he and his son, Helmeppo, ruled over the people like tyrants. Luffy found Zoro on the Marine base field tied up. He watched as a little girl tried to take food to Zoro, but she was thrown over the wall. He went to talk to Zoro, and learned he made a deal to survive tied up for one month. He asked Luffy to feed him the food on the ground the girl had tried to bring him, and asked to thank Rika for him. Luffy later learned that Zoro had saved her that Zoro had saved her from Helmeppo's nasty dog by slicing it. Helmeppo was soon heard bragging that he never intended to honor his bet with Zoro. Luffy clobbered him, then went to go ask Zoro to join his crew. Zoro refused, but Luffy said he would get his swords for him in return for joining him. Luffy went to find the swords Helmeppo took from Zoro. They went to his room, found three swords, and Luffy returned just in time to absorb the firing squad aimed at Zoro and Coby, who was trying to untie him. The bullets bounced back, and Zoro was untied. He pledge himself to Luffy's goal to be king of the pirates, then to two defeated Captain Morgan and his son. Coby stayed behind to become a Marine, and Luffy helped him along by talking about his past with Alvida to get him to punch him in front of the other Marines.
Luffy and Zoro set sail, but he got caught by a giant bird he was trying to get to eat. Trapped in it's mouth and flying, Zoro tried to follow from the row boat. When Luffy got free, he crashed into Orange Town. A nearby girl with orange hair suddenly came to him, calling him boss; and ran off. Two pirates attacked him, knocking his straw hat off. Finally angry, Luffy quickly defeated the men. The girl from earlier had been watching the whole fight and was impressed. She introduced herself as Nami, and asked Luffy to join her. At an empty house, Nami explained the city was abandoned because the Buggy Pirates had taken over. She told him how she planned to go to the Grand Line with the map she had stolen from Buggy the Clown and steal from pirates. All for her goal of raising money to buy a certain village. Luffy asked her to join his crew as a navigator, but her mood turned when she discovered he was a pirate. She tricked Luffy by tying him up turning him over to Buggy as the boss who hired her. They locked him in a cage and tried to kill him with a special cannon ball. They wanted Nami to fire it, but she turned on them. Zoro appeared to save the day, and he was cut by Buggy's Chop-Chop Devil Fruit powers. After Nami fired the cannon back on the pirates, Zoro lifted Luffy in the caged and they ran.
Thy stopped in front of a nearby pet shop, and Nami tossed Luffy the key to his cage she stole earlier to set him free. Unfortunately, a dog sitting nearby ate it. The mayor of the town, Boodle, arrived and thought there were attacking Shu Shu, the dog. Boodle put Zoro to rest in his house, and came out to explain that Shu Shu guarded the pet store for his now deceased owner. Mohji, of the Buggy Pirates, showed up riding his giant lion and attacked Luffy, The cage was broken, and he was knocked several blocks away. When he returned, he found Shu-Shu injured and howling as the pet shop he had been guarding burned. Luffy went after Mohji with a vengeance and easily defeated him with his lion. Luffy returned with the only box of pat food he saved from the lion and gave it to Shu-Shu.
Boodle tried to go after Buggy alone after he had fired one of his Buggy Balls into town, and Zoro, Luffy, and Nami followed. Luffy saved Boodle from Buggy then knocked the only man out so he wouldn't get hurt. Buggy tried to fire a Buggy Ball at them, and Luffy reflected it back with his Gum-Gum Balloon attack. Luffy and Buggy fought hard, and he recognized the straw hat. Buggy revealed that he was once a member of the same crew as Shanks and hated him. Buggy took Luffy's straw hat and slashed it with his knives. Luffy won the fight against Buggy with Nami's help, and blasted the villian into the skies. The people of the town returned, and thought they were the cause of their trouble. Luffy, Nami, and Zoro ran away, and Luffy left the treasure Nami stole so they could rebuild. Still, Nami repaired Luffy's straw hat for him.
Out to sea, Nami repaired Luffy's straw hat, and the three landed on the Island of Rare Animals. It was rumored to be haunted by a spirit, but the only person there was a man stuck inside a treasure chest named Gaimon, and a menagerie of odd mismatch animals. He had been left behind by his own crew, and being stuck in this chest he couldn't reach some treasure chests he saw at the top of a small peak. Luffy went up there to check the treasure, but refused to give them to him. Not because he was greedy. They were empty, and didn't want Gaimon to feel bad for trying to get them for so many years. They left Gaimon with the animals that he realized are his real treasures.
On the next leg the crew came to Gecko Island, Luffy met a long-nosed man named Usopp who claimed he was the captain of a giant band of pirates and threatened to have Luffy shot, but he wasn't afraid. Usopp had later proven to be a liar, and Luffy learned that he was actually the son of Yasopp, the sniper of the Red-Haired Pirates. After Usopp left to see his friend Kaya, the orphaned owner of a large estate. Luffy and the others followed, hoping she might be able to give them a real pirate ship. They arrived to see Usopp's confrontation with Kaya's butler Klahadore, who was mocking Usopp's father. Luffy met with Usopp on a cliff and talked about his father, then they noticed Klahadore meeting with a man named Jango. They overheard the conversation that Klahadore was actually the evil pirate Captain Kuro and was plotting to kill Kaya and take her wealth. Luffy shouted down at them in his anger. He got hypnotized by Jango, and he fell off the large cliff head first. Not knowing about his powers, they all thought he was dead.
Luffy, Zoro, and Nami agreed to help Usopp defend the village and Kaya. They made a plan to use an oil slick at the landing the Black Cat Pirates planned to use, but by dawn they realized they got the wrong one. Luffy ran off alone to find the real landing, but got lost and arrived after most of the others. Jango hypnotized his own crew to believe themselves to be super strong, but it accidentally also worked on Luffy. Luffy crushed the crew with his Devil Fruit powers, but fell asleep after ripping off the figurehead from the Black Cat Pirates' ship and was crushed underneath. Nami risked injury to try and wake Luffy up by stomping on his face. This worked just in time for Luffy to stand and take a hit from a razor ring from Jango that was meant for Nami.
Captain Kuro soon arrived and Luffy was determined to fight and defeat him. Rather than fight Luffy directly, Luffy was shocked to see him attack his own crew with blinding speed. Luffy got incredibly cut up in the fight, but it ended quickly once Luffy got his hands on Kuro. He tossed him back to his own crew and told them to leave. Once gone, Luffy collapsed into Nami's arms. He couldn't believe the kind of captain Kuro was, but she called him average for pirates. Later, Kaya gave Luffy and his friends a pirate ship that was designed by her loyal butler Merry. It was called the Going Merry. Luffy invited Usopp to join the crew since they were friends, but refused to let him be the captain.
While out at sea, Usopp painted their Jolly Roger pirate flag and put it on the sails. Due to an accident when they practiced with the ship's cannon, they met two former bounty hunter allies of Zoro, Johnny and Yosaku. Since the crew was looking for a cook, they directed them to the floating restaurant, Baratie. As they approached, a Marine officer Fullbody tried to fire on them. Luffy deflected the cannonball, but it accidentally hit Baratie. Luffy met with the owner, Zeff, while the crew ate. Luffy agreed to work off the damages, but Zeff was asking him to work as a busboy for over a year. A pirate name Gin from the crew of Don Krieg stumbled in for food, but he was kicked out. Luffy later saw the cook Sanji feed the starving pirate. Luffy then settled that Sanji would be his cook, though Sanji refused. Gin left and returned with Don Krieg and his crew. They were there after running away from the Grand Line, but they were followed by the Shichibukai, Hawkeyes Mihawk. This was the man Zoro had been after, and Luffy went into a rage when he saw Mihawk cut Zoro down. Johnny, Yosaku, and Usopp had pulled Zoro from the water alive, and he promised to never lose again. Luffy then ordered them to go after Nami, who had stolen the Going Merry.
Luffy's fight then turned against Don Krieg, who was trying to take Baratie as his new ship. Luffy defended the restaurant with Sanji against Krieg's crew. Krieg depended so much on his weapons and gadgets. Luffy was stabbed, cut, and exploded as he kept fighting. He destroyed Krieg's weapons and armor to win. Gin took his captain and the rest of the crew to leave. Yosaku returned to tell Luffy where Nami had gone, then Sanji agreed to join his crew. The three set sail on Sanji's personal ship toward Konomi Island.
During the trip to the island, Sanji and Luffy were attacked by a sea-cow creature named Mohmoo. They defeated the beast and used it to drag their ship faster to shore. It was a bit too fast because they crashed inland and into Zoro. After the dust settled, Johnny arrived to tell them that Usopp was captured by the Arlong Pirates and it was Nami who killed him. Luffy refused to believe it and Nami showed up moments later. She told Luffy where he could find his boat and leave. Luffy's answer to that was to fall to the ground and refused to leave without her as his navigator. Nami ran off, but her sister, Nojiko, showed up a short while later. When she tried to tell Luffy the story of Luffy's past. He just stood up and walked away. Luffy wondered around the island aimlessly and came to Cocoyashi Village. Later, Luffy watched as Nami was trying to stop the people from her home village from revolting against Arlong because he would kill them all. In a rage that she couldn't stop them, Nami began stabbing the Arlong mark on her shoulder over and over as she screamed. Luffy stopped her. At first she screamed at him to leave, but with tears in her eyes she pleaded for him to help her. He placed his treasured straw hat on her head, screamed out "Of Course I Will!", and left with Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji to face Arlong.
Once at Arlong Park, Luffy crushed the large gate with his hands, and demanded to know which one of them was Arlong. With one punch he knocked Arlong into the distant wall. He tried sicking his sea monster Mohmoo after Luffy, but he tried a new trick. He slammed his feel into the concrete, spun himself around, and flung the monster into the air. The downside was that he was now stick in the ground. Arlong ripped up that concrete and tossed him into the water. The crew now had to struggle to fight Arlong's crew and keep Luffy from drowning. They were assisted by Genzo and Nojiko. Knowing that his body could stretch, Nojiko pulled his head to be above the water as Genzo tried CPR underwater. Luffy was revived, but still stuck. Sanji freed him form the weight on his feet, and Luffy switched places with Zoro in fighting Arlong. Luffy tried more stupid tricks, but still matches Arlong blow for blow. When the fight moved into Arlong Park, they found themselves in a room filled with maps. This was the room that Arlong had kept Nami in as a child, forcing her to make these maps for him. Now he was enraged and began destroying everything in the room. Arlong tried to stop him, but Luffy had gone wild. Arlong bit into his side with his powerful jaws, but that didn't stop Luffy from using a Gum-Gum Axe attack that not only crushed the Fish-man but split Arlong Park in half. Luffy emerged from the rubble and screamed out,
" NAMI-!! You are my friend (nakama)!! "
Monkey D. Luffy "One Piece" Vol.
Nami gave Luffy back his straw hat, and a Marine who Arlong was paying off tried to arrested the crew. Zoro beat up his men, and Nami clobbered the commander for stealing from her earlier. The word spread of Arlong's defeat, and it turned into a huge celebration that lasted for days. In search of a kind of meat, Luffy got lost and found his way to a grave that Genzo was at. Genzo made Luffy promise to protect Nami and never make her sad. The next day, the crew was ready to leave, but Nami was nowhere to be seen. From onshore, she called for them to set sail and she ran through the crowd to jump on the ship. She then revealed she had pick-pocketed most of the people she passed.
While sailing to the next island, the paper arrived that had a wanted poster of Luffy and a bounty of 30,000,000 Berry. The next leg of the journey brought the crew to Loguetown, the birthplace of Gold Roger. The crew scattered to handle their own tasks, and Luffy wanted to see the scaffolding that Gold Roger was executed at. Once there, he was ambushed by Captain Buggy and trapped at the top of the scaffolding. His entire crew was there and he had teamed up with a transformed Alvida, who was changed after eating a Devil Fruit. Buggy swung his sword to cut off Luffy's head, but he still had a smile on his face and apologized to his friends.Luffy was saved by a sudden bolt of lightening that struck Buggy and freed Luffy. Now unbound, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji ran off to the Going Merry to escape. Luffy was held up by Commador Smoker, the Marine commander of the island. He had the powers of the Smoke-Smoker Fruit and couldn't get a single hit, and he used a jutte tipped with Sea Prism Stone, a rare mineral that cancels Devil Fruit powers. Luffy was saved by a man he couldn't see, and got away to the Going Merry. The Straw Hat Pirates were now on their way to the Grand Line.
Despite having an accidental turn into the Calm Belt, the crew escaped a horde of Sea Kings and reached Reverse Mountain. Luffy used his powers to keep the ship from crashing at the entrance and traveled up the mountain to the peak and back down into the Grand Line. Their path was being block by a giant whale, and Luffy came up with the crazy idea to shoot the cannon to stop them from crashing into it. It worked, but the figurehead of the Merry was broken off. He was so angry that his favorite seat was broken that he punched the whale in the eye. The whale then swallowed the ship, but Luffy was caught outside. Oddly enough, Luffy found a hatch leading into the animal. While running around inside, Luffy ran into an odd pair named Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9, then found the Going Merry with the crew in the whale's belly. They were led out by the whale's doctor, Crocus; and he told them the story of the whale Laboon. He had been left behind by a pirate crew he arrived with, and was trying to ram through Reverse Mountain. Luffy quickly started a fight with Laboon, but it was to save him from trying to kill himself. Luffy painted his mark on Laboon as a promise they would meet again to continue their fight. Crocus gave the crew a Log Pose so they could navigate the Log Pose, and agreed to give Miss. Wednesday and Mr. 9 a ride to Whiskey Peak, the first island on their journey.
The crew was surprised to be welcomed by the people of Whiskey Peak. There was a huge party where they were fed, and Luffy fell asleep. He woke up to find most of the people had been attacked, and one of the people Luffy talked to said it was Zoro who caused it all. Luffy was blind with rage and attacked Zoro. The two had a fight in the town that was interrupted by Miss Valentine and Mr. 5, but it was finally ended by Nami. Only then Luffy learned that Zoro had attacked the people because they were a town of bounty hunters who tried to capture the crew. Miss Wednesday was actually Princess Vivi from the kingdom of Alabasta. She and her family's adviser, Igaram, had infiltrated the evil organization known as Baroque Works that was plotting to destroy her kingdom from within. At first she refused to tell them the name of Baroque Works leader, but accidentally slipped it was the Shichibukai, Crocodile. This conversation was overheard by Baroque Works spies and were now involved.
Igaram tried to use himself as a decoy so they could all escape to take Vivi back to the kingdom, but his ship exploded soon after setting sail. Luffy ordered them all back to the ship to sail away. He grabbed the still sleeping Usopp and Sanji, dragging them back to the ship. Vivi was joined aboard by her childhood pet duck Karoo. As they started to sail away, a lovely woman's voice called out a warning of the dangers of the reefs. They all turned to find Baroque Works' second in command, Miss All-Sunday, was already aboard the Merry. She offered to help them with an Eternal Pose that would lead them on a safer path back to Alabasta, but Luffy didn't trust her and crushed it. She left without incident, and they never knew if she was really trying to help them or get them in a trap.
The crew sailed into a humongous jungle island called Little Garden. When he went exploring with Vivi, they stumbled upon a herd of Brontosaurus that his inadvertently ticked off and got swallowed. He was saved by a giant named Dorry form the land of Elbaf. They traded food and laughed until the volcanoes erupted on the island. Dorry left to battle with his giant-rival Broggy. They had been at this fight for over 100 years. Luffy shared his sake from the Going Merry with the giants, but one of the barrels exploded in Dorry's stomach. Luffy had to fight him when he was blamed for this sabotage. He eventually realized Luffy wasn't to blame, but trapped Luffy under the mountain when the volcanoes blew again. The culprit was revealed to be Miss Valentines and Mr. 5 he met on Whiskey Peak. Mr. 5 attacked him with his Bomb Bomb Fruit powers, they took Vivi, and left Luffy for dead. Luffy got free and found Mr. 5 and his partner with two more of the Baroque Works, Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek. Mr. 3 had Zoro, Nami and Vivi in a trap that was slowly killing them by covering them in wax. Luffy also fell into the hypnotic trap of Miss Goldenweek powers, but was freed by Usopp. The two teamed together to rescue their friends by melting the wax with fire. Mr. 3 tried to hide himself in the jungle and many wax copies of himself, but Luffy used his instinct to find the real one with one Gum-Gum Stamp attack.
Sanji arrived once the fighting was over with an Eternal Pose to Alabasta. He had talked to Crocodile and convinced him that the Straw Hats were dead. They had a little celebration about not being hunted then set out to sail. Both Dorry and Broggy saw the crew off and prevented them from being swallowed by an enormous goldfish that sailed around the island.
While traveling to Alabasta, Nami became deathly sick. She tried to convince them to head straight for Vivi's home since the civil war created by Crocodile was getting worse. Luffy left it up to Vivi who decided to first find a doctor for Nami. They had a clash with a pirate crew led by a man named Wapol who tried to eat everything, including the ship and Luffy. Lufy blasted Wapol away, and they soon found the winter, Drum Island. They clashed with the citizen at the shore who took a shot that hit Vivi. Luffy wanted to fight, but Vivi stopped him, mocking him for being so reckless while Nami needed help. Luffy followed her lead to bow to the people and beg for helping his friend who needed a doctor. Their leader Dalton agreed, but told them they only had one doctor who lived at the top of one of the tall, drum-shaped mountains. Nami was tied to Luffy''s back to meet Doctor Kureha and Sanji joined as escort. Luffy was told not to fall or get hit once. He could survive, but the shock could kill Nami.
While climbing through the snow, they were attacked by some wild beasts called Lapins. They weren't too much trouble for the pair until they triggered an avalanche. Luffy escaped the snowfall, but Sanji got buried. Luffy covered Nami, left his straw hat with her, and went searching for Sanji too. While Luffy was now carrying both his unconscious friends, he saw a Lapin cub trying to dig it's parent out of the avalanche. Without a word, Luffy pulled the creatures parent out and went back onto his trek. Wapol appeared to block his path. He was the former king of this island, and returned to try and put the people back under his dictatorial rule. Luffy had to run from this fight, but was backed up by the pack of Lapins. While carrying both Nami and Sanji, Luffy climbed up the vertical peaks barehanded and without a jacket. He suffered terribly during the climb, but made it to the top. At the castle, Luffy was in terrible shape, but before passing out pleaded with Kureha to take care of his friends first.
Luffy woke up with his injuries tend to and a talking little reindeer named Tony-Tony Chopper was in the room. Luffy at first just thought he was a wild animal and wanted to eat him. After discovering that Chopper could talk and transform into a man, Luffy thought he was a monster and wanted him for his crew. Wapol appeared at the castle in search of the weapons he needed. Luffy borrowed Nami's jacket and joined in the fight. Wapol fired at the jolly roger flag at the top of the castle, but Luffy went up there to defended it and place it back. Chopper wanted to fight Wapol and his men alone, and Luffy told him he wasn't alone since they were now friends. Luffy's fight with Wapol moved into the castle, and he blew the evil lord completely off the island with his Gum-Gum Bazooka attack. Chopper tried to refuse Luffy's offer to join them, thinking they wouldn't want a monster as a friend; but Luffy just told him to shut up and come. They left with Nami cured, Sanji healed, a new doctor crew member, and were off for Albasta.
Before they reached Alabasta, the crew met an odd man who could shape shift into anyone he touched. After he left with his own crew did they discover that Bon Clay was Mr. 2 from Baroque Works. The crew landed in the Alabasta city of Nanohana for supplies to trek through the desert so Viivi could meet with the rebel leader, Koza. Luffy ran into Smoker once more while he was running around looking for food. As he ran away, his brother Ace was there to cover the escape to his ship. Ace showed up on the Going Merry. He was now the commander of Whitebeard Pirates' 2nd Division, and was hunting for a man named Blackbeard who murdered one of the Whitebeard crew. Ace gave Luffy a piece of paper that told him it would allow them to meet again one day. After Ace left, Luffy asked Nami to sew the paper into the brim of his hat. The trip through the desert to the city of Yuba was a failure since the rebels were already gone and were in Nanohana. Left with the prospect of going through the desert, Luffy refused. He wanted to fight Crocodile. He told Vivi to stop trying to only risk her own life and be willing to risk their lives as well, since they were friends. Vivi agreed and led them to Crocodile's casino in the city Rain Base.
Smoker was also in Rainbase and he got caught with Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Usopp in a trap of Crocodile's. The caged was lined with Sea Prism Stone, and none of them could escape. Crocodile admitted his plan was to destroy Albasta's kingdom to take it over for himself. That's why he started the civil war. He flooded the room to try and kill Luffy and his friends. Vivi escaped the giant crocodiles to try and get help. Sanji saved them and got them free by forcing Mr. 3 to unlock their cage. The flooding increased and they were forced to swim out. Luffy ordered Zoro to save Smoker, too. The plan was to had for the Alabasta capital Alubarna to stop the war before it could start. Luffy stopped Crocodile from grabbing Vivi and took her place. He fought with Crocodile, but he was a Devil Fruit user who ate the Sand-Sand Fruit. He couldn't connect with any hits. Luffy was defeated, but noticed the water he was carrying allowed him to grab Crocodile's arm. Luffy was gored by Crocodile's claw and thrown into a sand whirlpool. He was rescued by Miss All-Sunday and left in the care of Pell, from Alabasta's royal guard.
Luffy returned to the fight riding Pell, who could fly from his Devil Fruit powers. The war had already started, and they showed up to save Vivi from Crocodile. He apologized to his crew for losing, and went back to his fight with Crocodile. Luffy was now carrying a barrel of water. He covered his body and could now hit Crocodile. The fight was now heated, but Crocodile got the best of him again before leaving. Luffy recovered an followed, and was directed to where Crocodile had gone by Smoker's subordinate, Tashigi. Luffy found Crocodile with Vivi's father, Cobra, in an underground, secret vault, and Miss All-Sunday had been stabbed. Even without the water, Luffy could still hit Crocodile with the blood that was now covering his own body. Luffy was poisoned in the fight, but he was still determined to surpass Crocodile. Using the Gum-Gum Storm, Luffy pummeled Crocodile into the solid bedrock of the crypt's ceiling and into the sky. Miss All-Sunday gave Cobra the cure for the poison, and Luffy carried them both out, despite Miss All-Sunday wanting to stay to die. He refused to listen and saved them all.
Luffy was asleep for three days while he recovered, and the whole crew was being shielded from the Marines by Vivi's father and the entire royal guard. There was a huge dinner party and Cobra thanked the crew. They couldn't stay for too much longer and made a plan to escape. Bon Clay called them through a transponder snail that he was protecting their ship. They made a deal with Vivi that if she met them on the east coast by noon that she could join them. The crew was being chased by the forces of Captain Hina, and Bon Clay sacrificed himself with his crew to allow the Straw Hats to keep their meeting with Vivi. Vivi was at the coast, but only to say goodbye and ask if they met again if they would still be friends. Nami wouldn't let Luffy call out to her, since the Marines were close by and Vivi could get into trouble for associating with known pirates. the crew stood at the rear of the ship and showed off the X marks on their arm as a sign of their friendship. After this farewell, they made a mad rush to escape.
Once the crew was free from pursuit, Miss All-Sunday revealed that she had stowed away on the Going Merry. Her real name was Nico Robin, and she wanted to join the crew. Luffy was confused, the crew rejected the idea, but Luffy gave in and let her join once she gave her reason. He vouched for her, since he knew she wasn't a bad person. Soon after, pieces of food started falling from the sky then followed by a giant ship that nearly fell on the Going Merry. When Luffy learned it was from a Sky Island, he was extremely excited at the idea and wanted to go. He found a map among the floating ruins of the Saint Briss for a place called Skypiea. Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji went under water to salvage for more information, but met another salvager named Masira. The ship was eaten by a giant sea turtle, but the crew escaped to run away. Robin stole an Eternal Pose to Jaya Island, and Nami tricked Luffy into traveling there to find clues to how to get to the sky islands. Luffy went ashore with Zoro and Nami, and met the Bellamy Pirates, who mocked them for the belief in sky islands. Though Bellamy and his crew attacked Luffy and Zoro, they refused to fight these guys. Once Nami dragged them both out of the bar, the large man Luffy almost fought with earlier told him that the era of no dreams that Bellamy believed in was crap. Back at the Going Merry, Chopper tended to their wounds, Nami was frustrated, but Robin found a clue.
They sailed to the east side of Jaya and met a man named Montblanc Cricket, who was the descendant of a man labeled as a liar. Luffy made friends with Cricket who agreed to help the crew reach the sky islands, but forgot they would need a South Bird to find the Knock-Up Stream that could launch them to the sky. While Luffy and the crew hunted for the bird in the forest. Cricket and his allies, Shojo and Masira helped modify the Going Merry for the trip. When they returned, Crisket and his friends had been attacked and robbed by Bellamy and his crew. Luffy went alone to get Cricket's treasure back, and Nami told him he had to return by sunrise. Back in Mock Town, Luffy faced off with Bellamy. After mocking Luffy and Cricket for being men who held onto their dreams, Luffy pulverized Bellamy with a single punch. Luffy returned with the treasure barely in time, but that's because he got distracted on the way back hunting for a Hercules in the woods. On the way to the Knock-Up Stream, the large man from Mock Town was now trying to capture Luffy, and revealed that his bounty had just been raised to 100,000,000 Berry due to his defeat of Crocodile. They escaped this fights by the Knock-Up Stream launching the Going Merry into the sky to find Skypiea.
The ship crashed through the clouds and into the White Sea. They were soon attacked by a wild man named Wyper but saved by s strange knight named Gan Fall on his flying horse Pierre. The crew found the gateway to Skypiea and opted not to pay the expensive toll. On the beach of Skypiea's Angel Island, they met a lovely young woman named Conis and later her father Pagaya. When Luffy learned about the forbidden land of God Eneru, he wanted to go there. Back at the beach, the military, the White Berets, came to arrest the crew for refusing to pay the tool and seemed to try and find any reason to hold them. Negotiations broke down to pay the enormous fine, and the Straw Hats defeated the White Berets. Not wanting to cause any trouble for Conis, they got ready to leave, but the Going Merry got dragged away by God Eneru's minions to Upper Yard with Nami, Zoro, Robin, and Chopper on board. Conis led them to the harbor under threat of defying the god is Skypiea. She loaned them a boat to go after their friends and sailed to Upper Yard. Along the path they reached a branching path, and choose the Ordeal of Balls. There they clashed with Satori, one of Eneru's priests; and he could seem to read their every move with the ability called Mantra. With Luffy and Sanji's combined efforts, they defeated Satori and moved on to meet up with the others and the Going Merry.
The crew spent the night on land in Upper Yard, and Nami showed the crew that Upper Yard was actually once part of Jaya, and the city of gold Cricket's ancestor was looking for is now in the sky. This is when Luffy thought up a secret plan of his own. The next day, the crew separated into two teams to get the treasure and escape. Luffy went with Zoro, Robin, and Chopper, but they got separated. Luffy wondered around and was lost when he clashed with Wyper, the Shandian warrior, once more. Though he accidentally got swallowed by a giant python called Norla. He didn't know he was swallowed by a snake and thought it was a strange shaking cave with treasure inside. He didn't help matters by trying to break through the walls. Nami got swallowed by the snake with Gan Fall, Pierre, and a little girl name Aisa. Luffy only then learned he was in a snake and wanted to escape out the butt. Luffy, Aisa, and Peirre got left behind when the snake's mouth opened again, but found a way out later. They came out to find that Zoro, Robin, Gan Fall, and Wyper had been defeated by Eneru. Aisa was scared that Eneru was going to destroy her home, so, Luffy had her ride on his back and directed him to Eneru with her Mantra power. Luffy found Eneru at his Ark Maxim with Nami. Luffy defiantly challenged the man who was seen as a god, and shocked everyone that he was immune to Eneru's electric Rumble-Rumble Fruit powers. Luffy still had a hard time in the fight due to Eneru reading his moves, but got several good blows on the villain. Luffy eventually got knocked off the Ark Maxim by Eneru when he melted gold over Luffy's arm to create a giant ball as a weight.
Luffy crashed to the ground and was unharmed, but Nami was still stuck on the ark. He found his crew at the base of the giant bean stalk, the Giant Jack; and the ark was flying higher to the Shandian Belfry Bell. Luffy ran up the stalk to save Nami, but part of the way up Nami appeared on her waver. She had escaped earlier, but Luffy still wanted to chase after Eneru. Eneru wanted the Belfry Bell, but Luffy wanted to ring it so that Cricket could hear it on Jaya and know where the city his ancestor looked for was. Nami agreed and helped Luffy by riding her waver up the Giant Jack to launch Luffy to Eneru. Eneru tried to destroy Skypiea with his powers, but Luffy leap into the ball of black lightening and canceled it out using the golden ball trapped around his wrist. With a final strike, Luffy used the Gum-Gum Golden Rifle to defeat Eneru and ring the Belfry at the same time. The people of Skypiea celebrated their new freedom, and next morning Luffy led Nami to the treasure he found earlier in Norla's belly. The crew left with a huge load of treasure and returned to the Grand Line
On Longring Longland, Luffy met and old man named Tonjit, who was isolated from his tribe and family. They helped him find his horse, Shelly; but she was shot by the captain of the Foxy Pirates, Foxy. He was challenging Luffy to the pirate games the Davy Back Fight that posed pirate crews against each other, and the prize was for crew members. Foxy cheated in the race around the island with his Slow-Slow Fruit powers, and choose to take Chopper. Zoro and Sanji won the next match, and Luffy got Chopper back. The final of the three games was a one-on-one brawl agianst captains, and the fight took place of the Sexy Foxy. Luffy selected to wear a fake afro, thinking it would give him more power. Foxy had the ship filled with traps, and kept catching Luffy with his powers. No matter how bad a beating he took, Luffy kept getting up. He's rather die than lose one of this friends. Luffy pulled out a solid win when he used a piece of mirror that had gotten stuck in his afro and reflected Foxy's slow beam back at him. He took their pirate flag as his prize, but left them a new one of his own design.
When they returned to Tonjit's house, the Marine Admiral Aokiji was there. Robin knew him and was terrified to see the man. He seemed nice enough when they watched as Aokiji froze the ocean with his Ice-Ice Fruit powers to allow Tonjit to meet up with his family. Though, Robin attacked him as he started to tell the crew how anyone she's ever associated with in the past had been destroyed. It was useless against Aokiji, who instantly froze Robin's body; and he would've shattered her if Luffy hadn't narrowly saved her. He ordered the crew to take Robin back to the ship to save her as he stayed to fight alone. He called for a man-to-man, but was quickly defeated. Aokiji only later realized he agreed to a fight of honor and didn't feel right about going after the others. Zoro and Sanji returned and took the frozen Luffy to Chopper to be thawed out like Robin.
While traveling to the next island the crew Going Merry got stuck on train tracks in the ocean and nearly run over by the sea train Puffing Tom. At the Sea Train Station, they met the conductor Kokoro and her granddaughter, Chimney. She gave them a letter of introduction for Iceburg, the mayor of Water 7 and owner of the Galley-La Company. Once on shore of Water 7, Luffy left with Nami and Usopp to cash in their treasure, and Nami got them top dollar for 300 Million Berry. They met with Kaku, the shipwright; and he went to examine the Going Merry. While Iceburg showed them around, Kaku returned with news that the Going Merry was too badly damaged and couldn't sail again. They never noticed that Usopp had been attacked and robbed of the 200 million he was carrying. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Chopper joined together to crush the Franky Family for attacking Usopp and stealing the money from him.
Back at the ship, Luffy gave them the bad news about the Going Merry, but Robin was missing. He told them they would abandon the ship and try and buy a new one. Usopp's argument then eventually pushes Luffy to tell them how the Merry can't be repaired. Usopp refuses to leave the ship. He resigns from the crew and challenges Luffy to a duel. Luffy's fight with Usopp was heated since he knew most of Luffy's weakness. It still wasn't enough and Luffy beat him with one Gum-Gum Bullet attack. Luffy ordered the crew to gather their things to leave and left the ship to Usopp. The next day, Luffy learned that someone attempted to kill Iceburg, so, Luffy and Nami left to go see him. When they arrived, Luffy is attacked by the Franky Family's leader, Franky, out of revenge for his friends. He was incredibly strong but not a devil fruit user. The fight was interrupted by the Galley-La Workers, who turned on Luffy. Word had spread that the assassin who tried to kill Iceburg was Nico Robin. They wouldn't listen as Luffy tried to explain his crew wasn't involved, and Luffy ran with Nami as she was being attacked by the town's people. After Luffy meets with Iceburg to hear if Robin did attack him, he ran into Zoro and Chopper.
That night, the crew watched outside Iceburg's home to see if Robin would return. Luffy rushed inside after they heard fighting inside, and he found the Galley-La worker Paulie down at the feet of two masked attackers. Luffy and Paulie were captured and being bound to the floor, but he freed himself then Paulie. In Iceburg's room, they found the attackers were the World Government Black-Ops team, the Cipher Pol. 9; and most of them were Galley-La workers undercover. Robin was among them, and told Luffy she was leaving his crew. When he tried to chase after her, the CP-9 commander, Rob Lucci transformed into a giant leopard-man, he pierced Luffy with his Six Powers skills, and throws him from the building. He eventually landed across town and was stuck between two buildings. Some time later, Nami found him and told him how Robin only helped the CP-9 to save them. Robin intended to go to Enies Lobby with the CP-9 to her death. Now that he knew she hadn't betrayed them, he broke free of the two buildings as the Aqua Laguna tsunami storm was about to flood much of the city.
Sanji, Usopp, and Franky were on the sea train carrying Robin, and Kokoro was on Water 7 to offer to drive them on the Rocket Man prototype sea train. They were joined by members of the Galley-La and Franky Family. During the ride, they had to blast through several more waves and met Sanji and Usopp, who was disguising himself as a masked hero Sogeking. Only Luffy and Chopper believed this ruse. Luffy was itching to get to Enies Lobby to fight and he had a new technique he wanted to try.
Luffy was the first to rush in on Enies Lobby and made short work of the hundreds of Marines and World Government agents on the island. He eventually reached the top of the first tower and met with another CP-9 member, Blueno. In their battle, Luffy told him that he was glad to of met them, because it made him realize he needed to get stronger to protect his friends. To prove that, he revealed his new technique called Gear Second. Luffy won and tossed Blueno into the tower across the great chasm. Robin was on the balcony, bound by Sea Prism Stone cuffs; and she was surrounded by CP-9 and their leader Spandam. Robin shouted at him for coming and told him she wanted to die. After the rest of the Straw Hats arrived, Spandam mocked Luffy for challenging the World Government and pointed to the flag at the top of the Tower of Justice as a symbol of their power. Luffy's reaction was to order Sogeking to burn the flag. Luffy proved to Robin that he and the others were willing to declare war on the World Government to protect her. He screamed out to hear from her that she wanted to live, and Robin answered, calling out for them to take her out to sea with them.
The crew crossed the chasm with the Rocket Man sea-train and crashed into the lower levels of the Tower of Justice. There the CP-9 member Fukuro told them that each of the CP-9 had a key, but only one was the real one for Robin's cuffs. Luffy left finding the key to the crew as he chased after Robin. Luffy reached searched but there was no way to reach from the tower to the bridge across the whirlpool filled ocean. Chimney then appeared to reveal a secret passage. He used the Gear Third to destroy the iron gate in his way, and chased through the dark tunnel, screaming out Robin's name. Luffy came to a large lit room where Rob Lucci was waiting to fight him. It was an intense battle between these two, and Franky arrived carrying the key to Robin's cuff. Luffy held off Lucci to allow him to get ahead to her. Luffy's fight with Rob Lucci was the most intense of his life to date. He took a terrible beating but refused to stay down until he won. Lucci was determined to kill both Robin and his crew. Luffy used the Gear Second and Gear Third skills and finally won using the Gum-Gum Jet Gatling. He fell from exhaustion and couldn't move at all. Now he had to be rescued as the Marine Buster Call was in effect, and they were surrounded on all sides by some of the Marine elite. They were all saved by the appearance of the Going Merry, that had somehow sailed out there on it's own. Once on board, they all made a run for freedom.
The return trip on the Going Merry and celebration was cut short as Going Merry suddenly split in two. Iceburg had arrived to meet them, and the Straw Hats gave the Going Merry a Viking-style funeral at sea to say goodbye. He was then asleep for three days on Water 7, and were honored guests at the Galley-La offices. He was woken up by a punch from his own Marine grandfather, Garp; and he told the crew not to fight him. In his gramps troop was also Coby and Helmeppo. Garp then revealed to Luffy how the man who saved him from Smoker in Loguetown was his father, the Revolutionary Army leader known as Monkey D. Dragon. After Luffy met with Coby to talk, Luffy learned that Franky had met with the crew to offer to build them a ship. There was a giant party that ended up involving nearly the entire city, and Nami beat Luffy severely when she learned he spent most of their money on it. Just as they heard their new ship was completed, the Franky Family memebrs arrived to show the entire crew now had bounties and Luffy's had gone up to 300,000,000. Franky was now wanted, and the Franky Family asked Luffy to take him with them. At first, Franky refused out of pride, but Robin used her own method of persuasion. As they sailed away from Water 7, Garp tried to capture them. They nearly left Usopp on Water 7 until he broke down in apology for leaving the crew. Luffy quickly reached out and pulled him back aboard. The crew settled on the name Thousand Sunny for the ship and blasted off using Franky's incredible inventions built in.
The crew were enjoying the luxuries of their new ship, and accidentally set off a flare trap that they had found in the ocean. They soon sailed into the Florian Triangle and came across a ghost ship with a skeleton aboard. On board the ship, Luffy met a living skeleton named Brook, and he shocked Sanji and Nami by asking him to join his crew. On the Thousand Sunny, Luffy learned that Brook's shadow was stolen and couldn't enter the light. He offered to find the person who stole his shadow, then the crew found themselves trapped inside the floating island-ship, Thriller Bark. Brook ran off into the island, and Luffy wanted nothing more than to explore it. Nami, Usopp, and Chopper crashed ashore Thriller Bark while they used the Mini-Merry, and Luffy and the others were attacked by an invisible man. As the crew landed on the island in search of the Nami and the others. They were attacked by a huge Cerberus, that Luffy eventually tamed; and found the island filled with an army of strange ghosts, zombies, and humans who also had their shadows stolen by the Shichibukai, Gecko Moria. Luffy agreed to help, since he was after the person stealing shadows anyways. While exploring the zombie filled castle, the crew members slowly began disappearing, and Luffy was captured by Taralan during the fight with some General Zombies. He was brought to Gecko Moria and he cut off Luffy's shadow to put it in his 900th zombie, Oars. He was then put back aboard the Thousand Sunny with Zoro and Sanji.
Luffy went after Moria, and another team went to go find and rescue Nami, who was still missing. Luffy found Moria, and he faced off against his Shadow-Shadow Fruit powers. While he thought he was chasing Moria into the forest. It turned out to be a shadow copy. Though in these woods he met Lola, who was the leader of the Rumbar Pirates. They had their shadows stolen but had been stealing shadows from zombies. When the shadow of another person was forced into a living body. It increased the powers of that human, even their skills, for ten minutes before the shadow escapes. Hundreds of shadows were forced into Luffy, and he became Nightmare Luffy. He found most of his crew had been defeated by Oars, using Luffy's own powers. After saving Nami and Usopp form being crushed, he fought with Oars solo and was easily besting the behemoth. The shadows wore off, and he could barely move. The crew all teamed together to hold Oars still and Brook tossed him to crush Oars' spine with the Gum-Gum Giant Bazooka attack. Dawn was staring to rise, and Gecko Moria was still ready to fight. Luffy pushed far past his normal extremes and recklessly stacked his Gear techniques to fire off the Gum-Gum Gigant Jet Shell. It still took two shots, but Luffy won and every shadow he ever stole was returned.
Luffy was unconscious and suffering incredible trauma from his fight, and was unaware of the appearance of Bartholomew Kuma on Thriller Bark. He was there for Luffy's head for defeating another Shichibukai. Everyone tried to defend Luffy, but Kuma defeated them all with ease. Only Zoro was still up and offered to take Luffy's place. Kuma then used his Paw-Paw Fruit powers to remove all the pain from his body, and let Zoro take it all on. Luffy woke up after a day and felt surprisingly good, and Zoro refused to tell anyone the cause of his incredible injuries. There was a party held on Thriller Bark, Luffy again asked Brook to join his crew, and this time he agreed. While rummaging through the treasure on the island, Luffy selected what he thought was a worthless glass bangle to wear, and he learned from Lola about the Vivre Cards. This reminded him of the paper Ace gave him on Alabasta. When he went to check it, the paper was slowly burning, and Lola told him that meant the person the paper was linked to was dying. The crew left Thriller Bark to continue their journey. When asked by Nami about Ace, he was sure Ace would be fine and wouldn't like it if he was to show up to save him. Luffy was confident in his brother's strength.
The crew reached a dead end at the Red Line but couldn't find a way to Fish-Man Island. When the ship was attacked by a Sea King, Luffy punched it away and out of it's mouth popped a mermaid and talking goldfish named Camie and Pappagu. She thanks the crew for her rescue and promised to thank them with takoyaki from the stand she works at with her friend. When they went to go meet her friend, they were called that Camie's friend was captured. The crew went to the base of the Flying Fish Riders, but were shocked to see Camie's friend. It was Hatchan, the former member of Arlong's crew they fought. They refused to help him, but Nami gave him the okay after she saw how desperate Hatchan was to save Camie. When Luffy tried riding one of the flying fish, he crashed into the leader, Duval's, room and saw his face. He was chased out by Duval on his large bull. Luffy grabbed the bull, looked it in the eye, told it to stop, and the creature suddenly collapsed. He then knocked the iron mask off of Duval, and everyone saw his face. It looked just like Sanji's sketched wanted poster. After Sanji re-arraigned Duval's face to look like someone else, he dropped his hostilities to the crew, and even pledged himself to help them. At Hatchan's takoyaki stand, he fed them and agreed to take the Straw Hats to Sabaody Archipelago, where they could get a coating for their ship that would let them reach Fish-Man Island.
On Sabaody Archipelago, Hatchan made Luffy and the crew promise not to do anything against the World Nobles, the Celestial Dragons, even if they saw someone killed. Luffy didn't understand but agreed, and this promise was tested when he saw Saint Roswald shoot an already injured pirate who was trying to escape slavery. They then left to see Shakky to find Hatchan's friend, and she told Luffy about the Eleven Supernovas that were on the island. Their search for Hatchan's friend went to the local amusement perk with Camie and Hatchan. It was during their fun that Camie was kidnapped to be sold to slave auctions. The whole crew scattered across the island to find her, and got word of where she was being sold. The Rosy Life Riders, formerly the Flying Fish Riders, showed up to give them a lift. A lift that had caused another crash into the auction house that Camie was being sold in. Luffy rushed the stage to get her, but stopped once he saw Hatchan was shot by one of the Celestial Dragons, Saint Charloss. Despite his promise, Luffy slowly approached Charloss and clobbered him with one incredible punch. A fight broke out with his crew and the World Government soldiers, but it was ended suddenly by the appearance of Hatchan's friend, Silvers Rayleigh. Luffy led the way through the army of Mairnes outside with Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid. The Straw Hats with Camie and the injured Hatchan ran to Shakky's bar.
It was at the bar that Rayleigh revealed that he was the former first-mate of the Roger Pirates, and told them the true story of how Roger wasn't captured the World Government. He turned himself in. When Usopp tried to ask Rayleigh if One Piece existed, Luffy shouted him down. Rayleigh agreed to give their ship the coating it needed, but told them it would take three days. He gave them each a piece of Vivre Card, but their plan to split up and hide was interrupted by the appearance of who seemed to be Bartholomew Kuma. It took the entire efforts of the crew to defeat when turned out to be only a cyborg copy. A Marine researcher Sentomaru then arrived with another from the PX-Cyborgs. Lufy tried to fight, but Sentomaru could somehow deflect all of his attacks with easy. Things got worse when the Marine Admiral Kizaru joined the fight. Rayleigh rushed in to hold off Kizaru, and Luffy's ordered retreat was brought to an end by the real Bartholomew Kuma. No matter how hard he tried, Kuma kept causing each member of his crew to disappear into nothing with a single touch. Luffy broke down that he wasn't able to save any of his friends, then Kuma used the same power on him. Luffy was sent flying through the air for three days and he had no idea where he was going to land.
Luffy eventually crashed on Amazon Lily in the Calm Belt, and almost immediately tried to head back to Sabaody Archipelago. This was of coarse a futile attempt. Luffy then tried eating some local mushrooms, but accidentally consumed a parasite mushroom. He was found by three of the Kuja Amazons, Margaret, Sweat Pea, and Aphelandra, and was covered in mushrooms. He was treated, but thrown in a prison once they discovered he was a man. He woke up in a jail, naked; and accidentally got angry when they game him frilly clothes. Luffy barely escaped their execution with Margaret in tow. He needed the Vivre Card of Rayleigh that she had form his old clothes. She told him that the only ship on the island belonged to the captain of the Kuja Pirates, Boa Hancock. When the other Kuja Pirates arrived, Luffy ran off in search of someone who could give him a ship. He accidentally crashed into the bathhouse of Boa Hancock and her two sisters, and he saw a familiar marking on her back. Luffy tried to escape but was caught and brought to the stadium for his execution.
At the Colosseum on Amazon Lily, Margaret and the others tried to take responsibility for Luffy being in the village, but Hancock used her Love-Love Devil Fruit powers to turn them to stone. Luffy was enraged and made quick work of the giant panther, Bakula, that was sent to kill him. Hancock then sent in her two sisters, Marigold and Sandersonia, to finish him off. They were both Devil Fruit users who could transform into snakes. They had other abilities that could deflect his powers and predict his moves, like the Mantra from Skypiea. When Sandersonia threatened to crush the stone statue of Margaret, Luffy inadvertently triggered a power he didn't even know he had, the Haki known as the Conqueror's Spirit. The weak collapsed in the audience, and Sandersonia follows his ordered to let Margaret go. Though, Luffy didn't realize what had happened. Once he got the stone girls out of harms way, Luffy used his Gear Second to fight the Boa Sisters. The fight was now more even, but he jumped on the back of Sandersonia to prevent the mark on her back from being seen. Moved by this sacrifice to protect their secret, Hancock canceled the execution and ordered the colosseum be evacuated.
Luffy thought he was going to be fed when they brought him to Hancock's bedroom, but she wanted Luffy to see the mark on her back again to remember where he saw it before. Luffy thought hard, but remembered it looked like the mark Hatchan had on his forehead. Boa Hancock then explained the mark was from their time as slaves of the Celestial Dragons when they were children but escaped. Granny Nyon arrived with the paper to show that he attacked one of the Dragons. Luffy took part in the party of the Kuja Amazons, but they were too interested in touching him and stretching his rubbery skin. Margaret saved Luffy by leading him to Granny' Nyon's place. It was there that Luffy learned the shocking news that Ace was captured and scheduled to be executed at Marineford. Luffy made the difficult choice to hold off his reunion with his crew to save his brother. Luffy had to sneak aboard a Marine ship hidden in Boa Hancock's robes to reach Impel Down. the prison where Ace was being held. Hancock could do this because she was also a member of the Shichibukai invited to take part in the war against Whitebeard that was coming.
Luffy hid in Hancock's cabin on the Marine ship and used the same trick of hiding under her clothes to infiltrate the prison. On the inside, Luffy moved down the corridors and surprisingly ran into Buggy the Clown, who had just escaped his cell. Once Luffy gave Buggy the glass arm bangle he got from Nami, Buggy agreed to lead Luffy further into the jail. In the Level 2, they met another former enemy of Luffy, Mr. 3. Though they both tried to betray Luffy, they all accidentally cashed through the floor as Luffy played around with the giant Sphinx. They landed in the sands of Level 3 and fell into the trap of the prison guard Saldeath. After they broke free, Buggy and Mr. 3 ran off on their own. The person who soon cam to Luffy's rescue at first appeared to be Zoro, then revealed himself to be Bon Clay. They joined together and fought with the animal guard Minotaurus, but Luffy blasted it away. Buggy and Mr. 3 soon joined the two at the entrance of Level 4 and they were being chased by Minotaurus. With all four of their powers combined, they defeated the creature but also caused the floor to collapse on them. Thy through they would be dead from the fall, but were able to escape the boiling pits thanks to the floor they fell with. It was here that Luffy finally clashed with the warden Magellan. He had the Devil Fruit powers of the Venom-Venom Fruit, and Luffy couldn't touch him without getting poisoned. Bon Clay ran off in fear, but Luffy went against him solo. Luffy was willing to sacrifice his body to win, but was overcome by Magellan's powers and was infected with so many poisons he was expected to die.
Luffy was taken down to the Freezing Hell of Level 5 to die, but Bon Clay arrived to break him out to save him. Bon Clay dragged Luffy through the snowy forest, but they were attacked by wolves. They were both later rescued by the Revolutionary officer and ruler of the Kamabakka Kingdom, Emporio Ivankov. Ivankov offered Luffy a chance to cure him, but at the risk of losing ten years from his life. Luffy accepted and Ivankov injected him with the healing hormones. It was a painful process that left him screaming for twenty hours before he recovered. He emerged from the room after eating massive amounts of meat but wasn't completely healed. Being an ally of Luffy's father Dragon, Ivankov agreed to help Luffy free his brother Ace down in Level 6. They rushed down to the next level but were too late. It was in Level 6 that Ivankov convinced Luffy to join forces with two other prisoners in these cells that were former members of the Shichibukai, Jimbei and Crocodile. Since they were too late to stop Ace's transport, they planned to head for Marineford. The group wagged a war up to Level 4, and Luffy ran into the same man he met at Jaya. He was actually Blackbeard, the man who captured Ace. Luffy fought him, but was held back by Jimbei since they didn't have time for this.
Luffy held off Magellan with Mr. 3's help as Jimbei, Crocodile, Daz Bones, and Buggy secured an escape ship. With the Marine ship ready for them, they were all launched to the ship by Ivankov's powers. Everyone crashed aboard, but one person was missing. Bon Clay had elected to stay behind and impersonate Magellan to have the Gates of Justice open for them to get away. Jimbie handed Luffy a transponder snail to contact Bon Clay. He thanks him for what he did and said goodbye just as the gate closed behind them.
Once the ship passed through the next gate, they were caught up in a giant tsunami wave that picked up the ship then it froze with them on top of it. Below them was Marineford and the war between the Marines and the Whitebeard Pirates was in high gear. With no time to spare, they broke the frozen wave and crashed into the frozen bay of Marineford. Luffy looked around and saw Ace on the scaffolding in the distance. Before Luffy could go to save his brother, he first stopped Crocodile from ambushing Whitebeard. To everyone's amazement, Luffy defiantly swore right to Whitebeard that he would be King of the Pirates. Luffy joined with Whitebeard to save Ace, then Fleet-Admiral Sengoku announced over the world wide broadcast that Luffy was the son of the Revolutionary leader, Monkey D. Dragon.
Luffy fought through waves of some of the Marine's best fighters. There was the fight with Captain Hina, then he clashed with Smoker again. They seemed evenly matched but his Sea prism Stone Jutte pinned Luffy down. Boa Hancock came to his rescue to fight Smoker so he could run on. Sentomaru appeared with the entire Pacifista Army, then Hancock was able to slip Luffy the key to Ace's cuffs. He was saved from the sword of Mihawk by the Vista from the Whitebeard Pirates. Whitebeard had ordered his men to support Luffy. All the pirates in the bay were caught in a Marine trap, and Luffy was able to escape from it with the help of Jumbie. He now was face to face with all three of the Marine Admirals, Aokiji, Kizaru, and Akainu. Rather than fight them, Luffy created a distraction to try to get past. It didn't work and he took a serious beating from Kizaru. Exhausted and unable to move, he begged Ivankov to give him another energy boost so he could continue to fight.
Luffy was back in the action but was facing may of the elite of the Marines. When Sengoku tried to order Ace's execution, Luffy accidentally triggered his Conqueror's Spirit skill again to cause the executioners and many others to pass out. It was there that Coby appeared to try and stop him, and Luffy defeated him with a single strike. His worse challenge ahead of him was when Garp tried to stand in his way. to Ace. He told Luffy that to get past him he'd have to be willing to hit kill. Luffy struck Garp away with a Jet Pistol attack, and finally reached Ace. Though, before he could used the key, Kizaru broke it with a laser beam. Luckily, Mr. 3 had impersonated one of the executioners and just woke up in time to shield them from Sengoku and produce a new key. Ace was finally freed.
Luffy and Ace fought with incredibly efficiency as they worked through the best the Marines had to offer. Whitebeard then ordered his crew to leave him behind as his final order. While Luffy and Ace tried to escape, Akainu kept taunting Ace by mocking Whitebeard. This distracted Ace, and the two fought. Despite both being fire based, Akainu was able to burn Ace, because magma is more intense in heat. Luffy's body finally gave away from his exhaustion and fighting. As he couldn't move, Akainu lunged to kill the son of Dragon, but Ace took the fatal blow to same Luffy. Ace fell into his arms with a mortal wound. He both thanked Luffy and his friends from the Whitebeard Pirates for finally making him happy to of been alive. The trauma was so great for Luffy to have his brother die in his arms that he collapsed and went catatonic. Luffy was saved again from Akainu by Jimbie and Whitebeard. Jimbie ran from Akainu with Luffy in tow, but they were being ruthlessly hunted by the Marine Admiral. Luffy was rescued by the arrival of Trafalgar Law, who was a doctor; but not before both Jimbie suffered a serious blow from Akainu that also struck Luffy's chest. Once aboard the Heart Pirates' Submarine, they moved to escape and Law saved Luffy's life. He would never see how Whitebeard was killed by Blackbeard, and Shanks arrived to end the war. Luffy was then taken to Amazon Lily to recover.
When Luffy woke in the Heart Pirates' Sub, he was heavily bandaged and in a rampage of rage and sorrow. He was screaming for Ace and ran into the forest of Amazon Lily. He destroyed everything around him in his rage until Jimbie arrived. He then had to admit that Ace was dead, and he broke down crying. He thought his dream was foolish, because he was too weak to be king of the pirates. He fought Jiimbie, who was trying to stop him from hurting himself; and he told Luffy to stop focusing on what he had lost and remember what he had to live for. Once Luffy calmed down, he remembered his crew and desperately wanted to see them again. Jimbei carried him back to the Heart Pirates, but they had left. Rayleigh was there to meet with Luffy. Boa Hancock soon arrived with her sisters and Granny Nyon. Rayleigh had a proposal for Luffy as a plan for him to get stronger and send a message to his crew. Luffy agreed to go to Marineford with Rayleigh and Jimbei.
They highjacked a Marine ship and made it to Marineford. Luffy had the message "
3D2Y" written on his right arm. The island was filled with reporters, and they followed Luffy as he went ashore with Rayleigh and Jimbie. Luffy went to the Ox Bell and rang it sixteen times, tossed a bouquet of flowers into the chasm, and took off his hat to pray for Ace. This picture was put in the papers that went across the world. Luffy then left the island and were picked up by the Kuja Pirates. The message was for the crew not to meet in three days, has they originally planned; but in two years. This was allow them all to train and get stronger. Luffy went to the island of Rusukaina, near Amazon Lily. Rayleigh taught Luffy about Haki and how to use it. They would remain on this island for the two years to survive. Luffy took off his straw hat and placed it on a rock to put his dream on hold.
Luffy finished his training on Rusukaina Island far sooner than Rayleigh had expected but he stayed on there alone for the complete two years. He was picked up by the Kuja Pirates, he refused the marriage proposal of Boa Hancock, and was taken to Sabaody Archipelago. It was there Luffy ran into a group impersonating him and his crew. After following the fake Sanji and Zoro, he clashed again with Sentomaru and one of the PX-Series. This time, he defeated it with a single blow and reunited with his real crew to leave for Fish-Man Island. It was under the sea they were blocked by a gigantic Krakken that Luffy both defeated and tamed to name it Surume. After being separated by the currents outside Fish-Man Island, Luffy wakes up in the house of Camie in Mermaid Cove. They then have to hurry to save Sanji from his blood loss, due to his constant nosebleeds.
In town they find some men from Kamabakka Island to give Sanji a transition and they meet the fortune teller, Madam Shirley. He slowly started to come back together with the rest of his crew, and they were invited by King Neptune to visit the Ryugu Palace out of gratitude for saving the princess' giant pet shark, Megalo, from the Kraken. Luffy wonders around the castle in search of meat and finds Princess Shirahoshi. While they talk, Luffy saves her from a giant axe that comes flying through the door. Luffy then convinces her to join him where she says she's always wanted to go, to the Sea Forest. She hides inside Megalo, and they both escaped the castle walls. After a brief battle with Vander Decken IX, they all ran off to the Sea Forest, and Jimbie had been waiting there for him. Jimbei then told Luffy and the others of Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger. After Luffy woke up, he learned that Hordy Jones had captured some of his crew. There was short a clash with Jimbei that was ended by Robin's appearance. Jimbei wanted Luffy to follow his plan.
Luffy and much of the crew hid inside Megalo's mouth as Shirahoshi and Jimbei pretended to be captured by Hordy's men and brought to Gyoncorde Plaza. They listened inside for the signal, but jumps out just in time to stop Hordy from killing King Neptune. The Straw Hat Pirates clash with the forces of the New Fish-Man Pirates, and Luffy fought with Hordy using many of his new Haki based skills. This fight moved into the ocean as Luffy fought to protect Shirahoshi. He suffered serious injuries, but ended the battle using a new attacked based on one of Ace's. Luffy tried to destroy the giant ship Noah from crashing into Fish-Man Island, but it was stopped by the Sea Kings.
Luffy was in need of a blood transfusion to save his life, and Jimbei defied to law to offer his. Luffy then invited Jimbei to join his crew. They were all taken back to Ryugu Palace for a great party. Neptune offered all his treasure to Luffy's crew, but it had been all stolen. Nami kicked Luffy out of the castle with Zoro and Sanji to find it, and it was discovered with the pirate Caribou. Though after retrieving it, they wondered into an argument of members of the Big Mam Pirates about how their factory had been damaged and there was no candy for Big Mam. Luffy took all the blame to save the island and gave them the treasure. The crew soon set sail for the New World. Jimbei swore to join the Straw Hats later.
Having finally entered the New World, the crew were sidetracked from their journey by a random call on the transponder snail from a man who had been cut and was freezing cold. The only nearby island they found was covered in fire and volcanoes. Zoro, Usopp, and Robin joined Luffy on Punk Hazard Island, and what they found among the ruins was a giant dragon what talked. After the dragon was killed, they discovered who was talking was a strange pair of living legs stuck to the dragon. Luffy freed the legs and instead stuck them to his back. After more exploring, the found the other half of the island was covered in snow and ice. Brook soon called to tell them that the rest of the crew had been abducted and taken to the ice side of the island. After crossing the lake and defeating the centaurs who attacked them, Luffy and the others wandered into the fight of Trafalgar Law and Vice-Admiral Smoker.
Luffy escaped the battle to later run into his crew, who had a bunch of giant children with them. Though, many of their minds and bodies had been mixed up by Law's powers. When the children began collapsing and attacking from withdrawal, Luffy went to go the the one who had been drugging them and was running this island, Ceasar Clown. They headed back to the cave they had been hiding in when Luffy sense two strong people nearing the cave. They returned to find Nami, in Franky's body, had been captured. Franky, in Chopper's body, joined him, but he took one of Chopper's Rumble Balls too soon and went into Monster Point. Luffy had to fight both of the Yeti Cool Brothers and avoid Franky. Before Rock and Scotch could escape with Nami, they were defeated by Tafalgar Law, who had come to see Luffy to ask him to help in his plan to defeat one of the Four Emperors. Luffy agreed once he heard who they would target.
Luffy may be the captain, but he's hardly a strict leader. He is very relaxed with the crew and doesn't often try to pull rank. He often listens to others, but once he's excited about something he's next to impossible to dissuade.
Luffy is short an rather skinny, but after a few years his shirt has tend to remain open showing an impressive set of abs. Despite his small size he is incredibly strong. He is rather stupid, but his kind and honest heart tends to win over all he comes across.
Luffy's honest heart tends to win over most who are around him. Even when an opponent guesses his weakness to sharp objects he wont even hesitate to admit it. Luffy's instincts have proven to be rather strong. In his battle against Mr. 3, Luffy's instinct was able to find the true person out of all the wax duplicates. Luffy's stupidity tends to make him hyper vulnerable to hypnotic effects. Even if they aren't even aimed at him.
Devil Fruit: When Luffy was a child he ate the Gum Gum Fruit that Shanks brought back from the Grand Line, unaware of what it really was. His body took on the properties of rubber. This gives his entire body the consistency of rubber. Making him near immune to most blunt attacks. His body will just absorb most attacks, even bullets. Though he isn't immune from cuts. He can also make his body stretch and mold to various shapes. Just to snap back. Luffy is often inspired by things he sees when creating new attacks. It's normally up to chance if they work or backfire.

Haki: Though mostly unexplained, Luffy has at times inadvertently displayed the ability to use the power called Haki. These powers can counter any special Devil Fruit power. Luffy was given special training from Silvers Rayleigh and learned to use all three of the Haki abilities.
On a few occasions Luffy has needed some outside force to aid him in the defeat of an enemy. These are normally something that doesn't involve his rubber powers directly.
To strengthen himself, Luffy was trained in the power of Haki by Silvers Rayleigh, the first-mate of the Roger Pirates. This is a power that all humans could potentially use, but few can access. A person normally focuses on only one of the powers, but Luffy was able to learn all three and mix them with his Gum-Gum Fruit powers for even more attacks.
Conqueror Haki: (覇王色, Haoushoku Haki) is the power to command and control the wills of others. It's an ability that is most likely found in those who gain fame in the world. When used it an cause people surrounding the user to pass out or even control the person's will for a short time. It's an intimidation tactic that is not to be abused, because it will effect all that surround. It's one of the rarest forms of Haki, but cannot be trained or strengthened. It is measured by the user's own spirit, and reinforced through personal growth.
Luffy's Straw Hat was given to him by Red-Hair Shanks. Not as a gift, but for safe keeping. He promised to return it to Shanks after becoming a great pirate. Luffy has always been extremely protective of his hat and rarely lets anyone else so much as touch it. On a number of occasions Luffy has left his hat with Nami, for safe keeping while he went into battle. She's also the person who repairs any damage. The manga canon events are when Luffy went to fight Arlong, in the Mock Town bar brawl with Bellamy, and the fight with Enel. After Nami started to join into the fights a strap was added, but is seems to appear and disappear. Nami is seen wearing the Straw Hat during some special cover images to chapters, often in pool or beach side settings (Volume 40 CH.379). This can also be seen in the seventh opening to the anime, "Crazy Rainbowstar" by T&T. Luffy has also left the hat with Vivi when on Little Garden. During the Davy Back Fight, Usopp wore the Straw Hat since Luffy was currently wearing a giant afro, and Usopp was Luffy's second.
Luffy's jolly roger is also the Straw Hats' flag. Interestingly his Jolly Roger was drawn by Usopp, after a failed attempt to draw it himself.
Luffy is the first member of the crew to have a wanted poster. He was ecstatic when he saw his first poster and is always pleased to see an increase in his bounty, though none of his actions are ever motivated to increase it.
Photo: The photo of Luffy was taken just after his victory over the pirate Arlong. The Marine forces had wanted a more menacing image, but they got his friendly smile. The back of Usopp's head can be seen in the background.
In the anime version, created by Toei Animation, the story was slightly changed from the original manga story. Where the manga began with the story of Luffy and Shanks. The anime treated this portion of the story as a flashback.
Being the lead protagonist in of the One Piece story. Luffy has appeared in some form in ever product based on the series but a few occasions he has not been the main focus of the story.
Luffy is very much unlike Sanji to be overtaken by a woman's looks or body. He would be perfectly happy to have a large feast. A few times though he has had what Eiichiro Oda has best described as a 'healthy reaction' to the female form, but the results have been mixed. Twice Luffy has had the opportunity to see Nami's body, once when Mr. 2 was showing off her body; and he's displayed the 'healthy reaction'.
Much later in the series in CH. 521 Luffy sees Boa Hancock's exposed chest and has no reaction, despite her being labeled as the most beautiful woman in the world. This could be explained that he was expecting food to be behind the curtain and didn't notice. However, he does ask why she's not wearing a shirt.
Oda would later explain this discrepancy by saying that Luffy reacted differently to Nami's body because he was around Usopp. Though, as a type of character that seems rather single-minded and set on his own emotions. In the instances where Luffy had reacted to Nami's nude body. The reactions were instantaneous. It feels more like Oda trying to explain a contradiction in his story. This is because his later statement was in contradiction of the one he made in the years prior.
