Moe is a anime/manga concept

There was an official "most moe" character of the year poll that's been going on in an site called Saimoe that went annual since starting out as a thread in an random 2Channel thread (an Japanese version of 4Chan as presumed) and boy, was it crazy this time. Many characters were entered, but at the top 16, there were some real contenders. Here were the semifinalists and finalist...

Semi-Finalist #2: Kyouko Sakura (Madoka Magica)

Finalist: Sayaka Miki (Madoka Magica)
Most Moe Character of 2013: Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica)
Most Moe Character of 2013: Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica)

Here were the other contestants from the poll and the bracket results:

Most of the Madoka Magica Main Characters ended up in the Top 16 along with some others from more recent anime series and movies, with best friends Madoka and Sayaka having to face each other in the finals after Kyouko and The Mediator were eliminated in the semi-finals. Hopefully next year becomes even crazier, even though this is the craziest that the polls have ever been.

Welcome to Moe Mondays!
Welcome to Moe Mondays!

Welcome everyone to a crazy idea for a blog series! Unfortunately, I'm still a new anime fan about 2 years and 5 months old. My experiences with anime is shorter than all of you guys and gals. This is one shot Moe Monday blog because I never watch a Moe show in my life until Tamako Market.

Although Angel Beats could be my first since I thought it was Moe at first, the cast is mostly male dominated. Forgive me for misunderstanding what Moe is, I think Moe is....

Big, Doe-eyed, Cute, Gingerbread molded, Female Characters!

For those who haven't known me in this community, I did new anime trailers for upcoming seasons with my pals , , and . Every time I see new anime series using these types of characters as a way to attract people, I avoided the anime because I don't think I'll enjoy it. However, I went out of my comfort zone and tried Tamako Market.

Don't worry, I won't spoiled people who haven't seen it. Think of it as a beginner guide.

Plot

Tamako Market is produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Naoko Yamada. The character are designed by Yukiko Horiguchi, known for her K-on and Lucky Star character designs.

It's a slice of life series that revolves around Tamako Kitashirakawa who lives at a Mochi shop in a shopping district called the Bunny Mountain which is a close knit community. One day, Tamako finds a mysterious talking bird named Dera Mochimazzi at a floral shop. After Tamako sneezes at the bird, the bird mistakes her actions as a form of affection. In Dera's customs, sneezing on the opposite sex is like a love confession.

The story goes on after Dera searches for a potential bride for his prince while living with Tamako.

Appeals

If you're a fan of Yukiko Horiguchi's character designs, you'll see these art style are to die for. You might see some of the girls look liked characters from K-on! Strangely, the characters you make first impressions in the first episode will be Tamako, Dera, and the little tsundere boy next door, Mochizou Ooji. That could be in my case. You'll learn more about Tamako's friends, Kanna and Midori, in episodes 2 and 5. Dera is a keystone character that hooked me into the series. I was not interested in any of the female characters. None of them stood out to me. For you guys and gals, you'll find one character that you'll like. For me, it was Dera.

Getting to back to the subject of Moe, this series fits the theme with the cute girls whose presence has not dominate Dera's spotlight. To me, the talking bird is the most interesting one in the series in my case. There is no fan service or nothing naughty in the anime. It's for all ages.

You'll learn about mochi. Who hasn't tried mochi yet? I haven't, so I would love to try it. You'll find out that there is crazy mochi addict in the series. The series makes a lot of different flavored mochi and gets you hungry. It's Moe version of Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is the last Moe Monday blog because I don't know any other Moe shows. I'll be happy to see folks in Anime Vice to take up the mantle. I made an ugly banner for this blog. Yeah, it's pretty creepy if you know Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes.

Thank you for reading this blog! I'm sorry for butchering the concept of Moe, but I had to share my experiences with my first Moe show.

Hey guys,

Sorry I've not being writing much here on the blog. After watching Chaos; Head I went on holiday then came back and started the new of school and well I've not really had much time for anime between Halo Reach and homework = P The little I have been watching however seems to be stuff I've already watched. Like Ghost in the Shell, Gurren Lagann and Evangelion. Not that this is a bad thing but I haven't been watching anything new (well new to me at any rate).

I've just started  Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai which so far (only two episodes have been aired as of now) and I'm really enjoying it. It's quite nice to watch a more 'down to earth' anime. The characters make me smile and I think Kyosuke and Kirino play well of each other and while showing the typical 'older brother and younger sister' relationship (basically getting at each others throats all the time) its also rather endearing and fun to watch. Then there's the Okatu side of things which I find interesting as myself have never been to Japan its a nice insight on how they are viewed in Japan. Then again I find it rather ironic as its audience is probably mainly Okatu's anyways, but really thats all part of the fun.

For you guys who haven't seen it yet. Basically, Kyousuke hasn't ever really bonded with his little sister Kirino who is basically uber popular, smart and well loved by all. She treats him with little respect until one day Kyousuke stumbles across a dating game hidden inside a magical girl anime. He quickly works out it belongs to Kirino and discovers her extensive moe anime collection.

Anyways off to play more Minecraft and eat Dorito's!

Till next time!

Super Duper Mini Review

 Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
 Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu

Haruka on the left and Milan from seeason 2.
Haruka on the left and Milan from seeason 2.
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, aka Haruka Nogizaka's Secret, is an anime adaptation of the ongoing light novel series created by Yusaku Igarashi.  There are two seasons both produced by Diomedea (previously known as Studio Barcelona) and directed by Munenori Nawa.  Both season consist of 12 episodes.

Genres:

comedy, romance
Themes: fanservice, high school, otaku, harem, moe

Plot Summary

Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu centers around Yūto Ayase and Haruka Nogizaka. Yūto is seemingly ordinary, but Haruka is attractive, intelligent, and rich, which prompts other students to idolize her and even give her French nicknames like "Nuit Étoile" (The Silver Star of the Night) and "Lumière du Clavier" (The Shining Princess on the Piano). One day, Yūto wanders into the school library in order to return a book and accidentally stumbles upon Haruka's deepest, darkest secret: she is a diehard fan of anime and manga, in other words, a regular otaku. Promising Haruka to keep this a secret, Yūto becomes her advisor and confidente of some sort and hangs out with her more, though earning some viciously envious glares from his fellow schoolmates.

Pros:
  • A really bright and colorful world.
  • A very cute/charming/fun tone to the show.
  • A lot of the cast are common character types, but that doesn't mean the cast isn't enjoyable.
  • Enjoyed the lighthearted take on the otaku world.
  • Speaking of otakus, some references to other anime like Evangelion and Shakugan no Shana.

Cons:
  • Some of the episodes are from the romantic comedy/harem check list.  Hot spring episode?  Check.  Beach episode?  Check.  School festival episode?  Check.
  • The animation can be stiff a times.  It could have been a little better.
  • The ending has no real conclusion.

While it's not most original show in the romantic comedy genre, I still had a fun time with it.

If you are looking for a fun/charming/lighthearted romantic comedy and don't mind fanservice, I say give it a go and see what you think.

What's a Super Duper Mini Review? Well, since I'm taking a break from written reviews, I decided to put a short list of what I liked and didn't like about the shows I review and from time to time, put down some notes and fun facts. For some info about the show like genre, plot summary, etc., I borrow some info from Anime News Network, Wikipedia, and of course our wiki here on Anime Vice.

Just finished watching the series and I gotta say it was actually pretty good. I enjoyed the characters and I find the plot to be pretty interesting. The concept of the series was an interesting idea, but originally I saw it as just a less fantasy-esque copy of Strike Witches, but after watching a few episodes I saw it as something more. It was still a Strike Witches-esque story with Strike Witches-esque characters (okay really the moe girls fighting war is the main connection but still, the characters are similar.) but at the same time something new shown through, an interesting story that could hold its own. I would have liked to see more in depth character study as an aspect of war effecting these young women, as well as a more diverse cast instead of just the archetypes that we all know so well. The art was very well done and had some of the most breathtaking scenes I had seen in an anime for a while. Overall I liked the series and recommend it to anyone who likes similar series.
Rating:
Characters: 2.5/5
Plot: 3.5/5
Art: 5/5
Production (By this I mean direction and any technical aspects like sound editing or Voice Acting): 4/5
Overall: 4/5

Now I have seen several articles over the past year or so talking about how moe is taking over anime and I just have to say that I too see it and have a hard time getting used to it. Now I'm no expert on the subject and while that may be the case I think I can offer a perspective that most experts can't, the perspective of a laymen. Now what I see moe as is a sort of changing of the guard, a sociological movement in anime from one  ideology to another. We may not like it now, but change often comes with anger and disgruntled anons. But I think this change can have good effects over time and reshape the industry for the better.

The Final Legacy - Chris Handley's case, and the future of the Industry.

This will be the final post before Garou Gothic opens, and this is part of a post i showcased over another site:

The Japanese dojin boys are TOO fucking powerful. You really dont know how deep and powerful they are. – I want to say that some in the Yakuza protects them but there is no evidence yet. And they have MONEY.

What i hear is that after what Happened to Handley, and other such issues coming from the west – the Diet wants to Mosaic the moe/loli works.

That isnt going to happen. Some might wish it will, but it cant.

But lets say it does pass.  What happens?

The only way anime/manga survives the next 5 years after such law has been passed – if they americans take over the japanese animation studios, lock – stock – barrel. And they cant. Why? Because those companies have DEBT up to there EYEBALLS.

The thing that will happen is that there will be a closing down of many of the shops that sell the trinkets that deal with moe/loli – and in retaliation those fans will not buy the “legal” stuff. Many of the dojin groups will move out of the country, and some will go underground (and there is a Japanese underground trust me, go play Yakuza 1, 2, Japanese 3 and Japanese 4 coming in April).

This would not solve the problem that the west is concerning with protecting children. Why you might ask? Well, have you heard of the Holly Greig case over in Scotland? No? And how about that the Scotland Justice system has thrown the case out because the kid has down syndrome – even though SHE knows who did such evil acts on her?

And you heard what Gordon Brown has stated – we will protect from the over sexualization of our children… right… hows that Naruto edit going? Oh wait – isnt Dinosaur King beating Naruto? Oh snap… wait – if he trying to protect the children of the uk, why go after the comic books and the animation/anime, and not the preds?

Folks, when ANY Government – and I MEAN ANY Government, writes these laws up of censorship, making it so VAGUE – you know something bad is going down at said government. It is ment as a distraction, a play on your morality – to say at the end – there not so bad, there trying to protect our kids…

When they steal money from you and call it a bailout for (jobs, Greece, British Pound possibly?) and you have to pay it back – and you dont have the money to pay it back – your kids HAVE no future. Trust me – there are real evil men – and real preds. But they dont just hurt your kids, they steal there future from them! And some of them come in the form of the SCHOOL BOARD, who uses cams to spy for some fun times.

And Chris Handley goes to jail for the wrong comic book. A soldier could get court-marshaled for seeing his cousin in a swimsuit. Holly Greig may never get justice. And the Lower Marion school board might get scot free from its unlawful act because it was “protecting” the school and the students.

Artists were never the problem, your faith that your Government gives a damn about you is the problem. But as long as those “preds that draw” dont come in my place – you wont see the pred that takes your money and steals your kids future, watches your kids without you knowing and the one right in your own mist because you wouldnt go to a web site and SEE where the bad guys ARE.

But let me continue on what will happen if this passes in the Diet.

When these dojin mangaka, state that they will not play this game they will leave. The fans will join them – and they will find ways of making a buck underground. This money will never go back to the economy – and since they are the only ones holding anime (monetary wise) afloat – there will be a crash that will send shock-waves through out the animation industry. If 40% present of the grunt work in Korea is anime – they lose 40% of there revenues – and even despite the HUB and SyFy kids could make up some of that slack – the damage will be done – and the TV stations will also lose eyeballs on there stations.

Now, there was a report that the Diet is looking to creating a Japanese FCC – and which that comes the obivous question, will there be a CTV act for the Japanese – the answer might be yes – regardless if this said legslation passes or not. But if it does, and such as CTV act comes in – the TV studios will be forced to do a similar thing that we do in the E/I programing. But with almost all of the animation studios shuttered, and the manga studios cut by at 1/2… what happens?

The americans will try and come and take over said studios. Too much over head however – and they will kill themselfs in the process (with the small exception of Sony, Disney, Nick/Viacom and maybe Comcast-Universal.)

Since the live action industry is too small and the movie industry are taking from the manga series – once said work is mosaic even if the work isnt sexual – it will collapses under its own weight. If there are major deaths in the industry during that period of time – it will create a deeping storm that even Yuasa and others such as him cannot get out of. The Japanese Animation Industry will suffer a semi permeant death. And once that happens, the North American Industry once it reaches another lull, which it is in right now – will take 15 to 25 years to get out of – until the technology to “Democratize” animation comes into full bloom.

Your saying now that the Doom is too much to bare.

This is what we face right now. And the artists right now have reach a stage they cannot and do not want to be controlled. Try it and the bomb sets off, and we will be wondering years from now how could it all go so wrong – we were only trying to protect our children…

You didnt protect 4Kids Entertainment. You didnt protect the past works and the past generations series and shows. You only protected the threat now, but the threat you didnt see or didnt care to see you didnt stop.

Like Ben Franklin stated before – You want Security? You cant have Liberty. And mankind has always wanted to find a place that is secure.

Could the cause of this whole issue with the moe/loli thing and the artists that drew them, come from a place dealing with feminism? Or better yet – the new sexual liberation going down where we have older Japanese females going to places like the Philpeans or Thailand – or younger ones looking for the “perfection” of a sexualized male – v shaped neck etc?

Could this be really – a backlash against feminism? Could this be the only way of showing a males insecurity (outside of the Man dress the younger generation are into) – about the loss of his country – the lost of his power via the works, the acts of the females he sees? Anybody wonder why this goes back to High School? Could this whole thing be about “the one that got away” and because about the situation with mental health and sexuality that the artists one way of saying “they need help” is via these works? Have they accepted that there is no hope for them?

Because one thing i have figured out, and realized some time ago. You cannot blame the female for the problems we see them acting out and so on.

You must blame many of their fathers and how they raised them. And some of these same fathers are in power, and some are in the Diet/Aussie Parliament/UK Parliament – and they send these laws to protect there granddaughters from the same men, if these men who these laws are aiming against back in high school, dated or at least talked to these daughters before and seen who they are – IMO they wouldnt really be drawing these works out of spite and out of desperation and anger.

Its a collective punishment on those that refuse to “play the game”, because it has become rigged for failure.

And we are all GOING get PUNISHED for this, and the bad guys will STILL do the same shit again and again.

This is not only the mark of the end of what could the anime and animation industries- but one of the final marks towards the end of western civilization. For once thought is controlled – Christians will get slapped if they are against homosexuality, and the homosexuals will get killed for such acts in a “Christian Nation” It becomes eye for an eye and many, many myriad of examples

This is all to protect the kids.

But it will lead them into the same hell we tried to protect them from.

There is one final word before i go - there was some words a mangka stated way back in the 70's or 80's - im not sure which, in where he states:

First they will get rid of the loli
Then they will get rid of the Yuri.
Then they will get rid of the Yaoi
Then they will get rid of the normal relations ...
and all will be left is the old men...

One better be careful.  This is all in the name of keeping you safe.

While the evil ones work in the darkness destroying your future.

Will you take the "gift" of protection from the Man In Black?

Or are you willing to be free?

Its your choice.

Its your future.

See yall in the shadows...

Novid.
