Hayate is one of those relatively rare moe guys.

Oh, where would we be without Borderline Hikikomori, who reminds us of the advent of the phenomenon known only as...SaiMoe.

Not familiar? The original SaiMoe was a yearly bracketed tournament in which people vote for the (usually) female character who they consider to be the most “moe,” based on nominees from 2ch. Moe is a pretty tough concept to define, so as you might imagine, it mostly winds up being a popularity contest. That competition has been running since '02, and past winners include Sakura Kinomoto ('02), Nanoha Takamachi ('05), Suiseiseki ('06), and last year's was Lucky Star's Kagami.

The SaiMoe competition Hikikomori is discussing is the International SaiMoe Tournament, which took the same idea to a global scale-- you can keep tabs on it in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, or Korean. Good times!

And don't forget Rika Furude winning in 2007! Now with the Lucky Star, Rozen Maiden, Higurashi, and possibly even Nanoha groups out of the way in the official competition (Nanoha has a movie coming out later this year, but they may not get in) , there's a very strong chance that Clannad will finally win this time. I mean, it took 3 of the top 8 spots last year, and one of them made it to the semi-finals...I hope Kyou or Tomoyo beats the crap out of the competition...

SaiMoe, it's SRS BSNS!!!

But since it's not the official Japanese one, I find it difficult to be quite as interested. I mean, when you include shows that came out even all the way back in 2006, that's a bit too many, especially when you allow characters from the not-even-official Touhou anime, it gets a little too crazy... I mean, I know Rin Tohsaka is the greatest character ever conceived and that Reimu and Marisa are awesome too, but don't you think this many characters from series with proven devoted fanbases versus new shows with relatively none by comparison is fair? This thing'll be about as one-sided once it gets underway as giving the player unlimited Master Sparks...

The international Saimoe thing is hardcore, but the appeal is small because the pool is rather limited. I think they hard cap it to 64?

On the other hand, 2ch's Saimoe begins with a massive count, over 280 characters.
