Earlier I reported on moe-fication being used to try and save hikikomori and NEETs from unfulfilling lives at their computers. Now I have another tale of moe girls saving the day, and in this case “the day” is “the small town of Ugo, Japan.” The city's population was in decline, and sales of their rice crop were down...until someone came up with a brilliant idea.
The city hired mangaka to illustrate a moe girl for the front of their rice bags. Not only did this boost the sales of the rice, it also gave tourism to the area a serious bump (perhaps because desperate otaku hope that the girl is based on a real Ugo city resident?). Now ugo is selling moe curry, strawberries, and more.
Oh, moe. What can't you do? I bet if we just handed some moe-girl pamphlets out in the Middle East we'd have peace within six months. (Or, y'know, not.)
