Alright, so PROJECT: ARBITER isn’t exactly a live-action Gundam set in World War II, but it’s pretty close. Witness the trailer yourself. Thanks to IO9 for bringing this up.
Pretty exciting stuff. Too bad they cut before the armored guy totally wrecks that panzer tank. Anyway, after checking the thing out, I’d say the whole thing’s a lot closer to Mamoru Oshii’s Kerberos Saga. My favorite entry in the series was JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE, which was about an armored police platoon in an alternate-reality Japan that had once been occupied by the Nazis. There definitely is more similarity between those armor designs and the ones in the trailer above.
For better or worse, there have been a few live-action adaptations of anime, running the gamut from Dragonball to Speed Racer to Casshern. James Cameron’s been saying for years that he wants to follow-up Avatar with an adaptation of Battle Angel Alita that would use the same motion capture and 3D technology. What do you think, oh real-life Anime Vice community? What anime would you like to see in live action? And what live-screen adaptations which you do anything to forget?
