Mobile Fighter G Gundam is the first of the Gundam Franchise to feature a different continuity not set in the Universal Century, and was created for the 15th anniversary of the franchise.

In this universe of the Gundam franchise all the counties of earth have left earth and gone into space to live in colonies. To prevent wars and needless deaths because of war, the colonies got together and decided that every four years each country would send it's best gundam and pilot to earth. Once on earth the pilots would challenge each other to gundam fights, If your gundam's head section is destroyed you are sent home a loser. The pilot that beats all other gundam pilots is the winner and his country gets to rule all of space for four years, past winners have been Neo egypt and Neo hong kong. 
 
Now thats the backstory, the actual anime follows the story of the Neo Japan fighter Domon Kasshu. Domon is picked to be the Neo Japan fighter because his father invented the devil gundam which is not a good thing. His father was put in jail Domon's brother stole the devil gundam and took to earth. Domon is forced to be to the Neo Japan fighter to get his father out of jail and to track down the devil gundam for the Japanese goverment. Throughtout the series Domon goes all over the world fighting each countries pilot, starting with Neo Italy then going through the USA China, France, Russia,england and Germany.
