Misato witnesses the Second Impact

Misato Katsuragi grew up in a broken home due to her father's obsession of his scientific research above all else, including his family. She grew to resent him for this. At the age of 14, years-old she was brought with him to the Antarctic Base. There, she witnessed the beginnings of the Second Impact when the First Angel appeared. To Misato's astonishment, the father she grew to hate so much sacrificed himself to save her by putting her into a capsule along with his own crucifix. He told her that she had to survive. She was still wounded but alive after the shock wave of a massive explosion cast her into the sea. She opened the capsule and looked out toward where the base once was. All she could see was an enormous glow and many wings of light reaching into the sky. She was the only human to survive the devastation.

After her rescue, Misato became detached and refused to speak to anyone for two year. The trauma of surviving left her nearly catatonic. She was scarred both physically and psychologically. Gradually, she would open up once more and be talkative and highly active by the time she attended college. There she made her first friend in a long time, Ritsuko Akagi. She had become so open, Ristuko described it as if she was making up for lost time. This impulse streak would lead her to a party where she met Ryouji Kaji. The two fell in love and soon moved in together, but as the relationship developed. She began to think he was only using her for sex and push away until they broke up. At one point she adopted a warm water penguin experiment lab she named Pen Pen from an experimental lab.

Misato's would join Ritsuko to work for the NERV organization. They were working on a way to destroy the Angels that brought about the Second Impact and save humanity. While working at the NERV German Branch, she met a young Asuka Langley Soryu. She lived there until she was promoted and sent to Tokyo-3 as Chief Tactical Officer, and Ritsuko was also there, having taken on the very position her mother once held. They were both under the commend of Gendo Ikari. Only days after arriving in Tokyo-3, he requested for her to pick up his son, Shinji Ikari. Though she knew the young age of Gendo's son, she sent him a playful picture of herself so he would know who was coming to pick him up. In the photo she was wearing revealing clothing with the added message for him to check out her breasts in the image then marking it with a kiss mark. On the way to collect Shinji, the Third Angel attacked Tokyo-3.

Misato Katsuragi is a lead character from the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion that was created by Hideaki Anno. and prodiced by GAINAX. Her appearance was designed by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Sadamoto is also the writer and artist of the manga based on the original anime series. In one interview, Anno describes Misato as being an older version of Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon). When describing her personality, he said she is the kind of person who "lives life so lightly as to barely allow the possibility for human touch. She protects herself by having surface level relationships, and running away.".

Misato's first appearance was in Neon Genesis Evangelion - Episode 1 "Angel Attack", and her first manga appearance was in Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 1 CH. 1 "Angel Attack". In Japan, she was voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi , and the English dub that was originally produced by ADV she was voiced by Allison Keith-Shipp . After the collapse of ADV, FUNimation Entertainment bought the license of Evangelion for the U.S. and redubbed it with Allison Keith-Shipp reprising her role.

As with most characters in the Evangelion series, Misato was named after WWII warships. Her family name Katsuragi (葛城, katsuragi) comes from the Unryū class aircraft carrier Katsuragi (葛城), which was completed in October 3, 1944. It was decommissioned in April 1946 then scrapped in December 1946. Her given name comes from the heroine of the manga series Aitsu by Minako Narita. Misato has black hair, she has a large scar on her chest from the injuries she sustained during the Second Impact, she enjoys drinking beer, and her weapon of choice is a Heckler & Koch USP.

In the 2006, Hideaki Anno began the Rebuild of Evangleion project that was designed to be the "true version" of Evangelion that he had wanted to make from the beginning but was unable to create due to the limitations of the technology and budget. Misato first appears just as she did in the original Evangelion story in the first film of the Rebuild films, Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone(2007).

Character Evolution

Misato first appeared in the series as a Captain of NERV and seemingly is one of the more lively people in the series. As the series develops, she is show to have deep emotional scars to match the rest of the cast. Upon Shinji's appearance in Tokyo-3, she has only been living there for a few days and gets lost in NERV's HQ. She is later promoted to the rank of Major. She elected herself to be Shinji's gaurdian and sees a kinship between then since they both have issues with their father. During her work she is straight forward and headstrong. She is suspected of following into NERV for a vendetta she holds against the Angels and will risk anyone to complete it. At home, she is laid back and a slob. She has no ability to cook and eats mostly fast food and beer. Her car of choice is a blue Renault Alpine A310. She always keeps her father's crucifix with her at all times and clutches it during extreme stress. Though her hair is intended to be black in color, the first anime series colored her hair a shade of purple.

Age: 29

Blood Type: AO

Height: 1.63m (5'4")

Weight: 47kg (103.4 lbs.)

Measurements: 83C/59/82cm (32.7C/23.2/32.2 in.)

Misato's relationship with her father was mostly defined by her hatred for how he put his work before everything. Still, she always tried to be the "good girl" so people would like her. Her feeling were thrown into turmoil by the confusion that he gave up his own life to save her. During the final episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion, she mentions how she tired of being good and wanted to dirty herself and that he why she slept with "that man". She has admitted that part of her relationship with Kaji both began and ended due to his resemblance to her father. Sex is an escape for her from sadness and loneliness. She connects physical comfort and emotional comfort as the same thing. Though they were very intimate, they have always been shown to address each other by their family names only. After Kaji's death, she switches from beer to coffee.

Of the entire Evangelion cast, Misato is the only one who frequently expresses open concern for Shinji's well being. She slapped Ritsuko who was wiling to sacrifice Shinji and was the only person who ran down to the Unit-01 when Shinji was thought to be dead by not refusing to return to human form from the LCL fluid. She was clutching his clothes, crying; and screamed out "Give back my Shinji!". In the film End of Evangelion, Misato admits regret of having failed to be a mother to Shinji. This is possibly eluding to her attempt to comfort him sexually after the deaths of Kaji and Rei. They were both in tremendous emotional pain, and she went into his room. She reached out to touch his hand talking about how they both needed to feel comfort, but he reeled away at her touch. Overcome with guilt, she left the room apologizing profusely. After this rejection, she purposely put further distance between them. The sexual tension between Misato and Shinji is one in many examples from GAINAX of having a teen boy involved in some form in a relationship with an older woman.

In the Rebuild of Evangelion project, several changes were made to her character. Her hair was given a darker shade of purple, she starts out as a Lieutenant-Colonel, and she is aware that the Angel Lilith is beneath NERV Headquarters. In the original anime, Kaji was the one to show her this. In the second of the Rebuild movies, she admits to Shinji that she was constantly pushing him to become closer to his father in an attempt to live vicariously through him since her father died saving her.

Evangelion: Death and Rebirth & End of Evangelion (1997)

Two movies were produced as companions to Neon Genesis Evangelion and were designed to be the finale of the controversial anime ending. The first was titled Evangelion: Death and Rebirth(March 1997). Budget issues with the film would prevent it from serving as the end it was intended to be. Four month later, the second film, End of Evangelion(July 1997), was released. The story followed events that followed Neon Genesis Evangelion - Episode 24. Misato's role in the movie is brief and she never really leaves NERV Headquarters. SEELE has sent there Mass Produced Evas in along with a private army to kill all the pilots and confiscate Unit-01. Just as Shinji is about to be executed, Misato appears and guns them all down. While on the run, Misato is shot and wounded. As Shinji has another panic attack, she suddenly grabs, hands him her father's crucifix, and gives him an intense open mouthed kiss. This was to give him an "adult kiss" and promises they will do more once he returns. She pushes him into the elevator down to Unit-01. Once he's gone, she collapses from her her wounds. she looks up to as Kaji if she did the right thing, but the only one standing above her is a ghostly Rei before the room is engulfed in a massive explosion. This movie served as the official finale for the canon Evangleion story until Anno's announcement of the Rebuild of Evangelion project in 2006.

The Rebuild of Evangelion is a series of four films designed by the original creator, Hideaki Anno. He stated that the technology of the era and the budget he was given didn't allow him to fully realized the vision he had for the story. He began the reboot of his story in 2007 with Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. Misato makes her first appearance in the first film the same way she did in the original series. Both her original Japanese and English voice actresses reprises their roles for this series. Few changes were made to Misato's character for the films. Superficially, her hair was darkened to appear less purple. Her starting rank is a Lieutenant-Colonel, she is aware from the beginning that Lilith is under NERV Headquarters, and in the second film, Evangelion 2.0 You Can Not Advance(2009), Misato only asks Asuka to come live with her and Shinji so they can get to know one another and she purposely selects Asuka as the test pilot of Eva Unit-03.

Manga

There have been four manga series produced based upon the Neon Genesis Evangleion anime series. One is based on the main story, and each of the following mangas created their own original story, Misato has appeared in all the publications.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 1 (1995)
Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 1 (1995)
Neon Genesis Evangelion is the first manga that was created as an adaptation of the original anime series. It was written and illustrated by the anime's character designer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It began it's original serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Weekly Shonen Ace magazine in December 1995. Asuka wouldn't appear until Chapter 20 in Volume 4, released in October 1997. Misato appears just as she did in the Evangelion anime series, but a few minor changes occur in the manga adaptation. She forces Shinji to live with her in her attempt to "fix his personality issues", during the twin angel attack of Israfel, she has Shinji and Asuka live in the same room at NERV HQ to practice a dance,
and she tells the story of how she found Pen Pen. The original ambiguous scene of who killed Kaji for the manga makes it much more clear that it wasn't Misato. Past some of these alterations, the main story of this series follows much of the original anime's story points and the film, End of Evangelion.

Misato and Kaji rekindle their long absent relationship.
