Origin

When Mirajane was younger, she constantly fought with Erza, her childhood rival, as Natsu did with Gray. She even tried to keep herself, and her siblings, Elfman and Lisanna, distant from "Erza's group." She was pretty much the bully of the guild and used her punkish attitude to intimidate the other members. Although she constantly teased Natsu, she had a soft spot for him and even found him cute at times. As she grew older, so did her magical power and her fame as the 'Demon' of Fairy Tail, earning her the title of an S-class mage.

Lisanna's Death

However, despite her tough image, Mirajane lost her will to fight and her magical abilities when Lisanna was "killed" by Elfman (because he lost control when he tried to take over "The Beast") during a mission. As a result, her competitive and aggressive nature was replaced with a more kind and sincere one. Ever since that incident, she has acted more motherly and has acted as the leader, in Makarov's absence, coordinating the day-to-day activities of the guild. She rarely talked about the incident and the guild members barely touched the subject. But she did visit her sister's grave with Elfman every year in anniversary of her death. However, it was later revealed that Lisanna didn't die, but rather, was transported to Edolas, an alternate dimension, through an Anima where she lived with the Fairy Tail of that world for the past two years. She eventually returns and is reunited with Mirajane and Elfman, who become overwhelmed with joy.

Creation

Mirajane was created by Hiro Mashima to showcase the different amount of mages that were present in Fairy Tail, especially the power of an S-Class mage. She, along with her brother Elfman and sister Lisanna, were created to illustrate the power of "Take Over" which allows the user to transform into any person or monster. She made her first appearance in Chapter 2 of the manga and Episode 2 of the anime. Mirajane is voiced by Ryoko Ono in the Japanese version and Monica Rial in the English version.

Major Story Arcs

Macao Arc

Mirajane is knocked unconscious.

When a fight breaks out in the guild upon Lucy's and Natsu' s arrival, Lucy asks Mirajane whether she should stop it but Mirajane, who just looks on with a smile, says that it happens all the time. One second later, she gets hit by a beer bottle, causing her to bleed and faint after saying its better this way. Later that day, Lucy learns more about Natsu when Mirajane tells her about his father, Igneel, and how Natsu sees himself in Romeo because Igneel left him and never returned. She continues saying that many of the mages in Fairy Tail carry some wound or pain including herself.

Galuna Island Arc

Mirajane explains, to Lucy, the guild's rules regarding s-class missions and the second floor, and how only s-class mages are permitted to access both. Later, Mirajane becomes upset when she learns that Happy stole an s-class job from the request board during the night. Her temper is further tested when she finds out that Laxus did nothing to stop him, earning him a frightful glare to which he hints as more suitable to her former 'demon' character.

Phantom Lord Arc

After Fairy Tail was attacked by the Phantom Lord guild, everyone in the guild retaliated. But following the fight, Makarov ended up losing his powers, which crippled their chances of winning. In need of backup, Mirajane and Cana attempt to contact Laxus and Mystogan, hoping they would join the fight. But when Laxus starts to criticize the guild and harass her, Mirajane loses her patience and cuts of their communication. She then starts to question as to why someone like him is a member of Fairy Tail.

Although unable to fight, Mirajane decides to help in the war effort by transforming into Lucy, while the named girl was kept in a safe place. However, Mirajane's plan doesn't work and as a result, she is captured and taken hostage. Because of her hostage situation, Elfman, in determination to save her, manages to regain his full body takeover magic and defeats Sol from Element 4. They later meet up with Gray, who defeated Juvia, and run off to join Erza who also managed to defeat Aria. They eventually face off against Master Jose but are overwhelmed by his power. Makarov, regaining his lost magic, confronts Jose and casts Fairy Law on him bringing him to his knees. Mirajane, along with everyone else in the guild, rejoice and celebrate their victory. Following the war, everyone contributes to the guild's reconstruction, including Mirajane, who shows off a handmade blueprint of the "new guild".

Fighting Festival Arc

The Miss Fairy Tail Pageant

When Team Natsu returns from the Tower of Heaven, Mirajane welcomes them back home and performs a ballad in front of everyone in the guild. She soon turns it into a rock song as a fight breaks out. The next day, she's apprehended by Gajeel so that he could sing his song. Later that day, all the women, including Mirajane, participate in the Miss Fairy Tail Pageant. But when Mirajane uses her transformation magic to transform her head to that of Happy's and Gajeel's, her chances of winning greatly diminished. But her, along with the other contestants, were turned into stone by Evergreen as part of Laxus' plan to enforce the guild's participation in a contest to determine the strongest member of Fairy Tail. She was later turned back to normal thanks to Erza.

The Battle For Fairy Tail

Mirajane Demon Takeover

After Cana was defeated by Fried, Elfman, who was accompanied by Mirajane, decides to fight him, but ends up losing as well. Despite his inability to fight anymore, Fried continues to attack him. Mirajane begs Fried to stop, but when he's about to kill Elfman with his magic, Mirajane snaps. She lets out a scream and a huge burst of magical energy that destroys the terrain around her, activating her Take Over magic: Satan Soul. Her speed and power are so great that Fried becomes overwhelmed. Even after he transformed himself into a demon using his own magic, he was still no match for her. As soon as Mirajane was about to finish him off, she suddenly stops the attack and returns to her normal self. She tells him that they don't need to fight because he's her friend and that everyone in the guild still cares about him because he is still part of Fairy Tail, which brings Fried to tears.

The Fantasia Parade

Mirajane is later shown in the Fantasia Parade along with Elfman where she emerges from a rose but transforms into a gecko-like animal.

Mirajane's Transformation Magic Lesson Special

During the Fairy Tail manga series, a special chapter was released in which Mirajane attempts to teach Natsu and Lucy transformation magic. She begins by transforming into Erza, followed by her clothes and voice. In reaction, Natsu runs and cowers behind Lucy. Mirajane then explains that once they are able to master that level of transformation, they would be able to change their physical size and gain new abilities that may become advantageous in battle. She then instructs Natsu and Lucy to take a good look at each other to form a proper image. By knowing the person well, she explains, one will be able to properly transform into him/her.

The duo then begin to concentrate their magical energy into the image they've built up, but nothing happens. Natsu gives it another shot and successfully transforms into Lucy. To Lucy's shock, his vest didn't cover up her "assets" and yells at him to cover up. Natsu, who seems amazed at 'their' softness, continues to feel 'his' chest. Extremely embarrassed, Lucy asks Mirajane whether this is sexual harassment to which she answers that its not that bad since they're friends.

Upon seeing Natsu's accomplishment, Happy tries to copy him. All the men in the guild, interested in what was going on, come over and anticipate what was about to happen. Lucy screams and panics that if Happy manages to pull it off, she would be unfit to be wed since Happy doesn't wear any clothes. To her relief, and the guys' disappointment, it didn't turn at as she thought (she did find it creepy). After Happy's failed attempt, Mirajane transforms into Lucy to please the crowd. In the end, Lucy just states that it feels very awkward for people to mess with her body.

Edolas Arc

When Wendy and Charle join the guild, Mirajane warmly welcomes them and asks what type of magic they use. Later, Gildartz returns to the guild and is surprised to see how much she has changed. Before the Anima absorbs Fairy Tail and the town of Magnolia, Mirajane and Elfman are seen going to church in anniversary of Lisanna's death. Her Edolas counterpart seems to have a similar personality despite the opposite personalities of the other members. It may partly be because of her 'dark' character when she was younger.

After the events in Edolas, Mirajane and Elfman visit Lisanna's grave but are surprised to see her running towards them. They learned that she was sucked by the Anima to Edolas where she lived for the past two years and once the magic was pulled from that world, she was transported back to Earthland. Mirajane becomes so overwhelmed with joy and happiness that her tears continuously stream down her face. The three siblings then reunite with an unforgettable loving hug.

S-Class Trial Arc

Following the announcement of the S-Class Promotion Trial and its participants, Makarov outlines the rules of the first part of the exam, which involve Erza, Gildartz, and Mirajane. Their role was to stop the teams, that they encounter, from advancing to the next round. Mirajane's path was Path A, which was chosen by Evergreen and Elfman. During their fight, the duo knew that their chances of winning were dwindling so they had to come up with a strategy. They did just that. The two managed to pass the exam and revealed that they told Mirajane that they were getting married, which shocked her, and both used this opening to defeat her. At the resting tent, she explains to Erza how she lost which stuns Erza completely (albeit she believed that there was potential for the pair). Although Mirajane knew it was a lie to catch her off guard, she imagined what their baby would look like. But the image was so horrifying that it brought her to tears. Soon after, Erza and Juvia decide to search for Mest and Wendy, leaving Mirajane and Lisanna on their own.

While waiting for their return, they are attacked by an army of mages from the Grimoire Heart guild who landed on Tenrou Island. After easily defeating them, Azuma confronts the two and Mirajane tells Lisanna to stand back. Lisanna tells her sister to use Satan Soul but Mirajane replies that she can't keep using it again and again. Once Azuma learns that Mirajane is "The Demon" he requests a serious fight with her. Because of her long hesitant pause, he decides to use Lisanna to get his fight by attaching a ticking time bomb to her body. He states that if he is not defeated in 3 minutes, it will explode. With no choice, Mirajane uses her Satan Soul at its full power to finish the battle as quickly as she can. Although the two seem evenly matched, Mirajane was running out of time. She decides to forfeit the battle and uses her remaining magical power to protect and save Lisanna from the explosion while hugging her. After the explosion, Lisanna wakes to find Mirajane's heavily damaged body covering hers, saving her from the blast. She calls her name but Mirajane doesn't respond. Azuma simply walks away disappointed.

Take Over Magic: Satan Soul

Mirajane is one of the most powerful members of Fairy Tail who can use numerous types of magic such as sleep, darkness, water, lightning, and transformation. Nonetheless, Mirajane is most famous for her demon take over called Satan Soul.

Evil Explosion	Mirajane uses her magical energy to lift water, even from a river, and hurls it at her enemy.
Darkness Stream	Shadowy hands emerge from her magic seal and attack the enemy.
Soul Extinction	Mirajane blasts a stream of dark magic at her enemy. She use this move on Freed.
Evil Spark	Mirajane uses this on Freed when she place her palms on Freed's chest and shocks him violently.
Demon Blast	Mirajane creates a large ball of dark energy that sends a beam once fully charged.

Sleep Magic - Mirajane has the ability to cast a sleep spell on a person, causing him or her to fall asleep. She can generate this effect with just using her bare hands.

Transformation Magic - Mirajane is very skilled in transformation magic. She can transform into any person or animal almost flawlessly, both in appearance and in vocals.

Enhanced Strength - When Mirajane was younger, she was able to destroy a table with one hit of her hand.

Enhanced Magical Power - Mirajane is known to harness a large amount of magical power, as stated by Freed. In their battle, she even had enough to lift a river and use numerous dark magic attacks (both water- and lightning-based).

Enhanced Durability - Mirajane is shown to be highly durable, taking multiple powerful hits and explosions and being able to be active in battle.
