Millenium Earl is a sorcerer that can turn souls into Akuma. He is the eldest and the leader of the Noah Clan and is the main antagonist of the D. Gray-man manga. He is the force behind nearly all of the opposition to the Black Order.
The history of the Millennium Earl goes back into antiquity. His true name is Adam, the First Disciple and strongest Disciple of Noah. 7000 years ago, he fought an as of yet not revealed opponent for the Heart of the Innocence. Adam won and subsequently, the great flood of legend took place and wiped out all life of the face of the Earth. Adam and the other 12 members of the Noah created through unknown means, the next generation of humanity and thus, all modern humans possess trace amounts of their Noah genes and for this reason, 13 people are the vessels for the Noah to continually be re-born when their old vessel expires or is destroyed.
The Earl of Millennium is the main antagonist created by Hoshino Katsura for the series, D.Gray-Man. The Earl was also in the series one shot Zone (ゾーン,Zōn) also as the main antagonist with a very similar design.
The Earl is an ancient being. His primary goal is the destruction of the Heart of innocence, a goal that has not changed in eons. Any evolving characteristics of the Earl have likely transpired in his ancient past.
The Earl's typical form has the appearance akin to a greyish-blue skinned Goblin. He is quite tall standing over 7 feet tall and is nearly as wide as he is tall. He has very long pointed ears and a huge set of teeth in his over-sized mouth that never seems to be shut. He usually wears an off-white tuxedo-like suit with a purple collar and a very tall black top hat that is different every time he is seen. This accentuates his already tall demeanor. Underneath his hat which is rarely taken off, his head also changes, from being horned to having bunny ears. He is almost always wearing glasses. He carries around what is presumably a golem partner similar to Allen Walker's Timcanpy. It is an umbrella called Lero that is seemingly sentient.
However the Earl is not limited to one form. He has been shown to take a form indistinguishable from a human, a trait that the Noah all seem to share. In this form he is a handsome middle aged man with fair skin and near shoulder length dark hair and the slightest bit of facial hair. Aside from wearing his striped pajamas when sleeping, his attire in this form is similar to his Noah Form, wearing an off white tuxedo-like coat and a different top hat, also unusually tall. In this form Lero is a cane rather than an umbrella.
The Earl has shown even a third form that was elderly and also appeared human-like, but it was cast in a shadow and not clearly depicted.
The Earl has a rather eccentric personality. He can be rather cheerful and is rarely seen openly upset, although tears fell from his eyes when his Second Ark failed to complete. He had also shown anger when he realized his mistake in not killing Allen when he had the chance, although his opinions of Allen seem to be conflicted. Despite being the Lord of the Noah, he shares a casual relationship towards most of the Noah, with Road acting very much like a spoiled daughter. Only Lulu Bell treats the Earl as an actual Master.
He has stated that he is indifferent if the other Noah wished to marry or mingle with humans and that he would allow them to do so of their own accord. It was also mentioned that his motives are not entirely clear aside from his avid wish to destroy the Innocence. Even though the Exorcists and Black Order are at continuous was with the Noah, it is believed that if the Earl so wished, he could crush the Black order and all the Exorcists any time he liked.
The Earl makes his first appearance from the shadows as he observed Allen Walker destroy a group of Akuma he had created.
After tricking Jean, the son of one of the European Black Order Branch's scientists, he turned his friend into an Akuma. But the intuitive Allen Walker had a bad feeling in his gut and followed. He arrived in time to save Jean, then vanquished the Akuma who had been Jean's friend. But the Earl flew up into the sky with Lero his Golem. As he did so he cursed at Allen, stating that he should have killed him years ago when he was a boy.
The Earl meets with fellow Noah Tyki after he and Road had successfully assassinated General Yeegar. Tyki handed over all the innocence fragments he had gathered from fallen exorcists and/or accommodators. The Earl began to subsequently crush the fragments in his hand. After destroying all the fragments he stated that unfortunately none of them was the Heart. Tyki made some small talk referring to the Earl as fat to which the Earl replied that he was indeed not fat. They then departed on their way separately, the Earl singing as he did so.
Like all the members of the Noah Family, The Earl has absolute command over all Akuma in existence, however the Earl alone has the power to create them. By manipulating a human to agree, he can draw the soul of the deceased and implant it into an Akuma body of his creation. Once in this form, the Earl usually commands them to kill the human responsible for bringing them back to life and until the time of their demise, the Akuma must obey the will of the Earl and the other Noah. Because their are thousands of Akuma in existence, it essentially grants the Earl total control over an army of monstrosities.
The Earl can emit Dark Matter blasts from both or either hand. They are highly destructive in nature.
Lero is the Earl's personal Golem. It is conscious like Allen Walker's Timcanpy and can turn into a variety of different things. Most often Lero is seen as an umbrella with a Jack o'lantern head at the end and it can be used as a flying tool. However it has turned into a cane and even a broadsword identical to Allen Walker's Sword of Exorcism but with an inverted color scheme.
Despite being the Earl's Golem, Lero has been used by Road Kamelot on occasion as well.
