Megumi Takani is a skilled doctor and friend of the Kamiya clan in Rurouni Kenshin.
Megumi first appears in episode 8 of the anime, escaping from the Oniwabanshuu. She finds Kenshin and Sanosuke who are playing with their friends. They take her to the Kamija dojo. Megumi flirts with Kenshin with the purpose of making Kaoru jealous. Soon, the Oniwabanshuu group attacks the dojo in order to kill Megumi, throwing a poisonous dart at her, which is received by Yahiko. Megumi uses her medical skills to save Yahiko, gaining the trust of the group. Sanosuke however, has doubts about her. These doubts are confirmed when he finds out that she is carrying around the same kind of opium that killed one of his friends.
It is revealed that Megumi is forced to work for the drug lord Takeda Kanryū, who was forcing her to use her abilities with herbal medicines to create a new kind of drug called “Spider’s Web”. The Oniwabanshuu group (who works for Takeda) discovers her hideout and Megumi decides to go back to Takeda’s castle to prevent further bloodshed. The leader of the group, Aoshi Shinomori, gives her a knife so she could have the choice to end her dishonourable life. Just when she’s about to do it, she was stopped by Kenshin, who told her she could make up for everything by helping the living people. Megumi believed him and went to work with Genzai once Takeda was defeated.
Hajime Saito, an old rival of Kenshin appears on the Kamija dojo and attacks Sanosuke, leaving him badly injured. Megumi cures Sanosuke. The Meiji government tasks Kenshin and Saito to go to Tokyo and stop Makoto Shishio and his group. Kenshin leaves without saying goodbye to anyone but Kaoru.
Kaoru spends all her day depressed in her house until Megumi finally convinces to go to Kyoto and find him. While Kaoru and Yahiko leave, Megumi stays in the dojo to take care of it. Shortly after, she receives a visit from Aoshi Shinomori who is looking for Kenshin.
After the battle with Shishio is over, Megumi goes to Tokyo to check on her friends, this is where she finally gives up flirting with Kenshin as she asks Kaoru to take good care of him.
In the last volume of the manga Megumi returns to the province of Aiuzu, where an old friend of her late father’s was building a hospital where Megumi hoped to work.
